I bought a 50GB Lyca Portugal plan and used it mainly for internet on my laptop. Speed tests looked excellent: 60–70 Mbps. Real-world use was miserable: web pages took forever to load, and a large file download crawled.
After a lot of digging, the cause turned out to be how Lyca's network is put together. Even though this is a Portuguese SIM running on a Portuguese network, my traffic wasn't reaching the internet from Portugal - it was being sent abroad and back first. Loading a Portuguese website meant a round trip out of the country and back. That adds a large delay to everything you do, and delay hurts everyday browsing far more than raw speed helps it.
I switched to an eSim from a native Portuguese operator (vodafone.pt; important: NOT a travel eSim from travel.vodafone, which is a different thing entirely and likely has the same issues), changing nothing else - same phone, same spot on the same desk - and everything that had been painful became normal.
I don't think Lyca is throttling anyone or lying about speeds. The connection really is fast in a speed test. The problem is that speed tests don't measure the thing that was wrong, so nothing warns you. If you mostly scroll social media, you may never notice. If you work online, download anything large, or just want pages to load promptly, this is worth knowing before you buy.

Finding it hard to enter address for billing but managed in the end

Communication and response times are non existent. Send them an email and don't expect a response this month. Understanding how they work the auto renew system is mind boggling and screams of a bodged up cheapo programme. You can end up with more than one package for the same phone if not careful and you have to un auto renew at the precise time otherwise your stuffed. Overall customer service and care of what the customer thinks is a flat zero! Why do I use them? They are unbelievable cheap. If you want cheap you get it but over and above a working network forget it.

Purchased and it said transaction not completed. So I purchased again- then got 2 emails with 2 different numbers and 2 charges on my credit card. Huge hassle to disconnect second number and make sure no auto renewal. No refund option when I tried to call. Agents hard to understand because of background call center noise. Overall a frustrating experience and I’m still not confident that I will not get more charges on my card.
