Do not insure your old or rarer car with the AA

Do not insure your old or rarer car with the AA

TL;DR: My no-fault claim is still ongoing and I will update this review. My 18-year-old BMW 320d M-Sport was hit in my driveway by a runaway trailer. The other driver admitted fault and liability, and Admiral offered to handle the claim directly. I chose to use the AA. I now wish I hadn't.

The AA initially handled things well, including a like-for-like courtesy car. Problems began when Copart became involved.

My BMW is a high-spec Limited Sport Edition with M-Sport package, 18-inch M-Sport alloys, leather, heated seats, panoramic sunroof, xenons, navigation, PDC and other factory options.

Copart valued the car at around 45% less than I paid for it less than 18 months ago. When I challenged the valuation, I was asked to provide comparable cars meeting an extremely restrictive list of criteria — same model, specification, mileage within 5,000 miles, registration age, transmission, fuel, engine and number of doors. For an 18-year-old car with an uncommon specification, finding meaningful comparables under those conditions is extremely difficult.

There have also been serious communication issues. Copart's emails have often arrived in automated batches and contradicted each other — including one asking for evidence, another rejecting evidence while referring to a telephone call that never happened, followed by another saying the matter had been referred back to the AA. The AA then told me Copart was still waiting for evidence.

I also have concerns about the role of Copart. They assess damage, repair costs and valuations for the AA, while also presenting themselves as a salvage vehicle auction business. I am not alleging wrongdoing, but I question how independent and transparent this process is when a company involved in determining whether a vehicle is written off can also handle its salvage.

Most concerningly, Copart took my V5C logbook when collecting the car and is now refusing to return it because the vehicle has been assessed and declared a total loss. The AA has been unable to recover it.

The AA's individual call handlers have generally been polite and sympathetic, but seem unable to resolve issues with Copart. I've also experienced delayed and duplicate evidence requests and evidence apparently being lost.

I formally complained to the AA about the valuation, Copart, the V5C and the lack of supporting valuation evidence. The complaint was acknowledged, but I have heard nothing further.

The handling of the interim payment and courtesy car has added further frustration. I was emailed at 5:15pm on a Friday, shortly before the office closed, telling me I needed to accept an interim payment to continue with the courtesy car. After accepting it while maintaining my valuation dispute, I eventually discovered I could potentially retain my car — 17 days into the claim and only after I specifically asked about it.

The latest email, sent at 8pm on a Friday, again gave me the disputed valuation and asked me to provide images of my V5C to process payment — despite Copart having possession of it and refusing to return it.

21 days into a no-fault claim, I am still fighting the valuation, trying to recover my V5C and trying to get clear answers about what is happening.

The other driver's insurer offered to handle everything directly. I chose my own insurer instead. I regret that decision.

This claim and complaint are still ongoing. I will update this review as matters progress.

Great options, Great prices

Each product level offers great cover and allows folks to make choices based on what they need rather than just what can take and the prices are great.

My vehicle had only just been registered by the dealrship, so was not showing up on the DVLA database so had to call in to complete the policy sign-up.

The person I spoke with was easy to understand and was knowledgeable and very helpful. polite and friendly, and we got the policy sign-up completed with no fuss.

Overall, I am very happy with The AA, their policy cover suits my vehicle and myself, the telephone contact was painless and the price was incredibly competitive.
