New Ford MAVERICK and PAIRR Wireless Carplay

I now have the PAIRR Wireless Carplay Adapter in my Maverick XLT and find it very satisfactory. I had tried two other brands and they both failed to connect. The PAIRR connected flawlessly and works fine. As someone else noted, there is a few seconds delay in launching Carplay, but it's usually connected by the time I can back out of the garage and be ready to drive. I find that each time it starts I have to press the play icon on the screen to start the music, which was not required in wired Carplay mode. The Apple Maps feature works fine. I've also found that there is one particular app on my phone, which, if open, positively destroys the sound quality of the music through the system (very low volume and tinny sound). But, closing that app restores the sound to normal. I've got my Pairr device connected to a short cable (USB-C) and fastened to the underside of the dash above the console tray with a 3-M Command strip. Overall, I'm very happy with the PAIRR device and find it worth the cost. I also use a Cheotech wireless charger in my console tray connected to the USB-A and it works great with my iPhone XS. So, toss the phone on the charger and go. Just what I wanted.

DO NOT BUY THE PAIRR DEVICE

DO NOT BUY this product, if your late model car comes with a built-in cellular hotspot. Such as, recent models from Ford, Mercedes, Jeep, Chrysler BMW, VW etc. The Pairr adapter will only work if you switch-off the built-in car WiFi because Pairr requires using its own built-in WiFi connection. This means your car security features will probably no longer work and any other features that the built-in hotspot provides will be unusable until you disconnect Pairr. If somebody riding with you wants to use their tablet, they can not use your hotpsot, unless, you first disconnect Pairr. This requirement is not made clear nor stated in their advertisements nor on the main page of their website. The website mentions Bluetooth and Wifi without making it clear that to use Pairr you must disconnect all other Wifi sources. The only place where it is referenced is buried in the FAQ, which most people have no reasons to read. I bought 3 of these devices for family cars. The Pairr devices are now worthless to me. I wish it were different because the wireless CarPlay function would be nice to have but my built-in hotspot is more important to me. This post reflects my personal experience and opinion.

Evil.

Evil.

This is a very bad product and an even worse company. First, the product that they shipped didn’t even work. Wouldn’t connect automatically to CarPlay (I had to manually connect from my phone), and then the connection was laggy and would keep disconnecting. The product just stinks, and is not as advertised, but this alone would maybe deserve a 2 star review. At some points, it kind of worked I guess? I don’t give one-stars lightly.

But the story doesn’t stop there.

I have been going through a literal nightmare with Pairr’s customer service rep, Eve. She insists the device is not faulty, and keeps offering me non-viable technical solutions, which I’ve spent hours of my life trying to implement. These solutions don’t work. I’ve reset the device, reset my CarPlay, installed an updater and update package on my computer (sketch), tried to download new firmware, made 6-7 videos to document what I’m doing to send to Eve and her engineering team to “diagnose the issue”. In short, I was eager and willing to get my hands dirty if it meant that this would make the device function as advertised.

Eve says she is getting these potential solutions “from the engineering team”, but I’m pretty sure she’s just making them up. She has mentioned the 30 day return window multiple times, and has made clear that after 30 days there is no way to refund.

This is their return policy:

“However, if you are not satisfied with the Pairr adapter, we have a 30-day return policy, which means you have 30 days after receiving your item to return it. If you decide to return an item, we will deduct a $25 restocking fee from the amount you have paid if there was no seller's fault.

To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it, unworn or unused, with tags, and in its original packaging. You’ll also need the receipt or proof of purchase. Please note, that it is the customer's responsibility to cover the costs of the return and provide a tracking number to monitor the location of the package.”

So, she is *stalling*. We’ve sent over 40 emails in our email exchange. I’ve spent a few hours of my life each week, for the last four weeks, trying unsuccessfully to get this product to work. When I first looked into shipping costs to send the device back to Eastern Europe I wasn’t able to find anything remotely reasonable. I would have spent more money sending it back than the cost of the device itself.

I almost felt bad for Eve in the beginning of this process. I mean, how much would it suck to spend your all day emailing half baked / fake technical “solutions” to irate customers? Sounds like the literal worst job in the world. So, I pitied Eve. Then, as time went on, I realized that Eve was not innocent, and that she was perpetrating a vicious and unjust business practice. There is no “solution” because the product just sucks. It’s just bad, period. Eve will continue to play games with you as long as you let her. As far as I’m concerned, that’s evil.

I gave up and tossed the device in the trash.

No refund. Hours of my life gone. Do not buy this product for any reason whatsoever.

Good Customer Service Wins!

--Update on 6/22/22
The company has very fairly refunded a partial amount of the purchase price without the necessity for me to ship the product back at my expense. I appreciate the customer service they've provided and would recommend working with them, confident that, if your unit does not work for some reason, they will make it right.

--Original review history
I strongly encourage you to consider before purchasing: I got this and music was glitchy - would cut out about every 2-3 minutes, absolutely not suitable for long term use. When I went to send it back, was informed that I would have to pay a $25 restocking fee + return shipping with insurance and mailing it to Lithuania - This was after waiting 22 days to get it from China.

Update on 6/1: I looked up shipping rates on the UPS website - to ship from my location in Southern California to the address in Vilnius, Lithuania with the requirements from Pairr, lowest cost was $215.51

Update on 6/8: The company has reached out to me to work on a solution which is appreciated - They have offered a partial refund without the requirement to return device, but not sure how much that will be yet. They've also stated that I could use USPS for a return - costs would be between $25.45 - $65.70

Solid addition to any car that doesn't have standard wireless CarPlay

If you have a car that's new enough to have CarPlay equipped with its infotainment system and it isn't wireless by default (surprisingly a ton of them), then this thing is a no-brainer.

Setup couldn't be simpler. After connecting the dongle to the same USB port that your car's infotainment system uses for wired CarPlay and following all the prompts that appear after initially connecting to its Bluetooth, you'll be up and running with wireless CarPlay goodness literally in seconds.

Compared to the dongle I had initially for getting wireless CarPlay in my 2021 RAV4 (that dongle being the Carlinkit), this one is leaps and bounds above that other dongle.

As soon as I start up my car, the unit starts up and is connected within about 10-15 seconds, so pretty much just as my infotainment screen shows it's warning/disclaimer, and as I'm backing out of my parking spot! With the other dongle, it would take about twice the time, and sometimes, it would even hang when trying to find my phone to make the wireless CarPlay connection. No such thing has happened with this one though!

Despite being wireless, audio quality feels good as wired, as does the movement around the various elements of CarPlay and also when it comes to the movement of the map when doing navigation.

Overall, I feel like you can't go wrong with this! If you're like me and have a car that still in this day and age only has wired CarPlay, get this, as wireless is the way CarPlay should be!

Pairr is great

Simple, effective & amazing. This little device has changed my driving experience. Having Apple car play is so much better than the built-in system. The connection is effortless, not had a problem, and would definitely recommend it!

A game changer

This thing has changed how I use Car Play. Everything works while it’s in my pocket! No more plugging in and having the phone slide around or fall on the floor. If on the dash mount I can hand it to anyone in the truck and they can operate it. Wish I found this years ago. ’17 Ram
