Fails to deliver

Ordered some ladders at the start of the week for delivery Saturday. Made plans and arranged for help sorting my guttering. Got a phonecall on the Friday telling me they were unable to deliver. Ended up being forced to purchase a set of ladders at 3 times the cost. Absolute waste of space company to deal with.

Biggest scam going

Biggest scam going.
They outsource the hire to smaller companies and act as the middle man.
We we're delivered broken equipment, the driver then helps himself back on to our property and leaves a further broken machine.
Unable to contact the company or Mammoth so had no choice but to pay for another hire from another company.
On day of collection driver helps himself in to my garden at 7am, has a good look around (including through my patio doors, all on camera) and then leaves.
Contacted the actual company who delivered, they admitted to knowingly delivering broken equipment and said I'd be refunded through Mammoth...still waiting for a refund since the 7th of April.
They don't have a phone line, you can request a callback but good luck getting a response. They answer you on chat the first time but good luck getting anywhere after that. Their parent company is National Tool Hire (also absolutely useless). Raising a ticket does nothing either.

They tell you to send an email to the My Experience email address and then just ignore you again! Still owed my money.

Hi Helen,

Let me start with your first point about us being a scam, you suggest this is because we outsource the hire to smaller companies.

We are a platform, like Uber, Booking com, Airbnb, Amazon, eBay, Just Eat, Go Compare, the list goes on, in fact you could say Tesco or John Lewis aggregate products and services from other companies, bring them together and sell them in store or online, the concept is not new or unique.

In terms of who we work with we work with, we work with international, national, regional and local independant supply partners. We take great care to make sure they are providing our customers with a great service at all times and need to know if anything falls down at any stage.

We have many thousands of hires each month and sometimes things don't go to plan, but we are here to help and put things right, where we can.

Which brings me on to my point of most concern, that you had a company you say "knowingly" delivered broken equipment, I'm not sure why anyone would do that, it doesn't make commercial sense, but to then have a driver looking through your windows on your property concerns me the most.

Can you provide more information on your order, as I cannot ascertain your order number from your forename alone and need more information.

i will then pursue this with the supplier and see what went on and look at your order history as well. If you have camera footage, that would help enormously too.

If you update your review with an order number we can go from there and hopefully get some resolution for you

Kind regards

Bob Jones

Broken....

I ordered a Hollow Tine Aerator, the acknowledgement was sent through to my email. The machine arrived today as expected, I say that it was dropped off on our drive, no knock at the door, no explanation as to how to use it, no instructions. After 10 mins of use two of the 'tine' pins dropped off, god knows where they are, I'm assuming in my lawn. I've been waiting 45 mins for an agent on their chat function, there are NO phone numbers. Don't do it is my experience.

Dreadful.

Dreadful.
Ladders were delivered one and a half days late, costing me tradesman pay. Phones unanswered for hours. Finally customer service said they'd arrange am delivery next day but delivery driver said no such instruction had been given. Ladders arrived at 2 30pm and weren't even what was ordered.Collection was days after agreement, causing more stress. Complaint took 3 weeks to reply to and basically couldn't care less. I hired from Mammoth in Manchester but seemingly they're owned by National Hire. Rude and rubbish company. I'd give zero stars if possible. AVOID!

Honest review

I’m a DIY-er but principally, I work in the financial services industry where duty to the consumer isn’t just expected - it is stringently regulated. If mammoth was audited to this level, it would be shut down in an instant or fined to the point that it may as well shutdown.
Website is poor and seems underinvested. Sluggish navigation everywhere and just seems very cheap. There are hints of false advertising where the landing page will advertise at one price but not account for VAT calculations or damage waivers etc…I’ve read on trust pilot that the VATs are highlighted in another section but that’s just disingenuous.
Disingenuousness increases on trustpilot itself where the company score isn’t even highlighted due to breaches of terms/conduct.
Yikes!
Telephone number on Google doesn’t work? Have I really read that right on fellow reviews that the number will be provided on the document containing your order number so presumably you have to acquire the service first, to be awarded that privilege? Service is sparse and the only lead I had was a chatbot. at first I thought it was AI but why would it stop working after close of business?
Reviewing your competitors for similar orders, it seems alarmingly overpriced on certain things as well.
If I were to guess, the company is probably being run by individuals who work in the trade and have some understanding of running a business, but have zero clue on how to deliver on service and retention, the basic models of customer operations and how to build a successful website and integrate suitable IT solutions.
I would avoid and go to more established brands - HSS, Brandons, Smiths…my own mother at this point!

Ripped off scam

Ordered ladders on Monday and paid for priority delivery for Wednesday before 1.30.. Its now Thursday still no ladder and now the ai agent on the phone line just cuts me off ass soon as I give it my order number.. Prepaid nearly £90 and they've left me right up the creek.. The job is not finished and I now have find another hire company to get finished.. Its going to cost me another 60 from another hire place and I've lost a days wages now too waiting for ladders that didn't turn up. These guys have not delivered and cost me a small furtune... Do not use under any circumstances.. I Spoke to an agent in the end at 5 mins before Tey close for them to say I'll call you back and never did... Companies like this need to be closed down it's basically a scam and can you believe they offer and none refundable option when ordering which obviously I hit as it was £14 cheaper without... I'm so angry right now.....

Terrible company

Terrible company, do not use!
- Despite the websites claims, they don't actually have any equipment and are just middle-men who hire from other real hire companies. So when you make a booking it isn't actually reserving anything for you.
- I wanted to check my order was confirmed but they refused and said I just had to wait (and I wasn't allowed to cancel the order), and left me waiting until the morning of my hire to tell me they couldn't provide the equipment.
- It is very difficult to contact them. They have a web-chat which leaves you in queue but they don't answer (trying three or four time, waiting 2-3 hours each time someone eventually spoke to me once) and a phone number which is just an AI chat-bot that can't do anything and doesn't provide any information beyond what is on the website.
- They didn't send me any emails or texts about my order. The only contact I had was on the day of delivery they called at about 8am to say they hadn't been able to get the equipment so my order was cancelled.
- They then kept all of my money for about two weeks after cancelling my order before they refunded it.

Shocking bad service - never received back my deposit amount.

Shocking bad service. The equipment arrived as expected but almost two months have gone by and I am still awaiting the return of my £550 deposit! I have chased daily with emails. They ignore the live chat, there is no phone number or option to speak to a human. Starting to wonder whether I have been conned.

UPDATE - NO PHONE NUMBER AS YOU STATE. SHARE IT HERE AS IM SURE I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON WHO WANTS TO GET IN TOUCH ! INSTEAD OF REPLYING TO MY REVIEW PERHAPS YOU COULD REPLY TO MY MANY EMAILS, LIVE CHATS AND ‘TICKETS’ ?!

Pay now stress later !

Pay now stress later !! I ordered hire of a turf cutter for Monday told after chasing that they couldn’t locate one within their network on Monday afternoon promised it would arrive today Tuesday then emailed that the turf cutter assigned to me failed a machine check? But was further promised I would receive a fully working machine tomorrow. Yet to have confirmation again promised by customer service team so who knows… I have had to postpone labourers to help with the landscaping twice making me look completely incompetent homeowner. First and last time I use these muppets I appreciate Mammoths are extinct so based on my customer experience this company will be going the same way!

Unable to make contact with a human

Unable to make contact with a human. No reply to my emails. No 'Live'!! Chat. I'm at a loss as to how to proceed.

Order number 243234.
After all the problems at the start of the hire i made a simple request that my £500 deposit be returned in a reasonable time.
3 emails later, no response, no refund.
Please refund my deposit.

The only response i receive is an automated email. This is ridiculous.

Update on 5th June...
My digger went off hire and was collected on 1st May. Having waited 21 business days hoping to receive my returned deposit, I raised my concerns in 'Chat' on 3rd June, who in turn 'raised a ticket' and passed the delay to the Accounts department. I've heard nothing.
I am still waiting for the return of my deposit.

Shockingly bad cowboys

Shockingly bad. I placed an order for a scaffold tower and got a phone call to say they would deliver on the Friday not Saturday as they could not get a delivery on this day. I accepted this and nothing arrived on Friday other than a text message to say the original date of Saturday delivery would be honoured so I did not call them. Nothing arrived on Saturday and despite several emails and two dropped phone calls nothing arrived on Monday. They couldn't even be bothered calling me back. Three days work lost! Use Speedy or HSS directly as this lot are cowboys!

Hi Simon,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're truly sorry to hear about the extremely frustrating experience you had with your scaffold tower order. Missing multiple delivery days, poor communication, and the dropped calls are not the standard we aim for, and it's completely understandable why you're so disappointed - especially with three days of work lost.

It seems on this occasion one of our suppliers let both of us down, and this reflects badly on us and was very inconvenient for you too. We process many thousands of orders successfully each month and situations like this are very rare, but we know that doesn't help when it happens to you.

We would really like the opportunity to look into this and put it right for you. Could you please send your order number and any other details about your order to MyExperience@NationalToolHire.co.uk

Our customer service team is also available on the phone number shown on your order confirmation or invoice, and they’ll be happy to help.

Once again, sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused. We hope to hear from you so we can make this right.

Reply from Mammoth Hire

Hi Anthony,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback — we really do appreciate hearing from our customers.

I completely understand why the experience so far hasn’t met your expectations, and I’m sorry that it’s left you feeling frustrated enough to leave a 1-star review.

Just to give a bit more context on how we work: we operate as an aggregation platform (similar to Uber for taxis, Booking.com for hotels, or Deliveroo for food). We don’t own the tools or the depots ourselves — instead, we connect customers like you with a huge network of over 2,000 local hire companies across the UK. This model allows us to offer no trade account required, simple online booking, and nationwide delivery without the usual barriers that traditional hire firms often have.

We process thousands of hires every month, and while the vast majority go smoothly, we’re reliant on many different parties (the local supplier, equipment condition, transport, and how the tool is used). Occasionally things don’t go exactly to plan, and when that happens we know it can be really disappointing.

What puzzles me a little is that you chose to extend your hire this morning, which suggests that up until now the equipment has been working for you and the booking process itself hasn’t caused major issues.

That said, I’d love to understand the full picture of what’s gone wrong from your side.
Would you be happy to drop us a quick email at MyExperience@NationalToolHire.co.uk? I’ll personally make sure it comes straight to me so we can look into your specific case, understand where we fell short, and see how we can put things right for you.

We’re always looking to improve, and honest feedback like yours helps us do exactly that.

Thank you again for your review, Anthony — I hope to hear from you soon.

£250 for a deposit still not refunded after 2 months

I ordered a wood chipper machine. I also ordered a set of googles for eye protection. The hire was about £250 for a week plus the same again for a deposit. The machine was delivered without the googles I paid for. The machine itself seemed incapable of chipping branches supposedly well within its capabilities. Basically it was useless. I returned the machine barely used and undamaged. TWO months later I’m still waiting to have my deposit back. They aren’t answering my emails.
I would avoid this firm as they behave like cowboy crooks.

Dear Justin,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback – we’re truly sorry to hear about your disappointing experience with us.

We completely understand how frustrating it must have been to receive the wood chipper without the goggles you paid for, especially when the machine then didn’t perform as expected. On this occasion it looks like one of our suppliers let both of us down, and we know how inconvenient and disappointing that is for you too.

I can see that your deposit and the cost of the goggles were refunded on 21st April. Inaccurate price advertising

This company advertised a lawn aerating tool for approx £140 for two days. I went through the online process submitting all my details including payment details only to find that once they had added delivery, compulsory insurance and VAT the bill was over £200 which i was not prepared to pay.
I am very annoyed at the time i wasted. This company needs to be much more up front with its pricing BEFORE it goes through the payment process.

Reply from Mammoth Hire

Good afternoon Ken,

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your feedback on Trustpilot regarding the pricing shown on our website. We really appreciate you sharing your experience, even when it's not the one we aim for, it helps us improve.

I’ve personally gone through both of our booking flows in detail (the quick product page version and the full basket/checkout process). In both cases, we display the full breakdown of costs — including hire rate, delivery/collection charges (where applicable), VAT, and any other fees — before you reach the final payment screen.

On the product page, once you select your dates and location, you’ll see a clear price summary.
On the basket page, everything is totalled up with a full itemised view.

We’ve worked hard to make our pricing as transparent and upfront as possible compared to many others in the tool hire industry. That said, I completely understand that if it didn’t feel clear or obvious to you during your visit, it’s still not good enough for us.

One thing worth noting is that the vast majority of our hires include delivery and collection in the price (except for some larger or specialist items that require dedicated transport due to size, weight, or regulations). We try to be very clear about this too, but I’d love to hear your specific thoughts.

Could you possibly let me know which part of the pricing felt unclear or hidden? For example:

Was it the delivery charge not standing out enough?
The way the total was presented on mobile/desktop?
Or something else entirely?

Your detailed feedback would be incredibly helpful. I’ll personally pass it on to our website and pricing team right away so we can review that section and make it even easier for future customers.

We’re always listening and genuinely want to make the booking process as straightforward and trustworthy as possible. If there’s anything else from your experience you’d like to share, please feel free to email me directly at MyExperience@NationalToolHire.co.uk.
Thank you again for your honesty, feedback like yours is exactly how we get better.

Kind regards
