Lovely caring, considerate staff.Dilara, Lee & Oliver made me feel very well looked after I couldn’t have been treated any better. I didn’t feel pushed or rushed at all. I felt very reassured that I would be looked after by highly trained staff when I go for my lens replacement. My husband had lens replacement 9 months ago and was so happy he talked me into going for a consultation. They were very happy to work around me with dates for my surgery.

After discovering I had cataracts in both eyes at the age of 49 I was so frightened about having anything done to my eyes. The thought of it really scared me. I made a totally appointment with optical express and I can honestly say it’s the best decision of my life. Having cataract surgery has totally given me my life back. I actually have 20/20 distance vision & only need a +2 pound shop readings glasses. The staff at optical express haymarket are outstanding! They made the whole process from start to finish simple and I understood every decision and process for my surgery. The staff are knowledgeable, reassuring, totally relatable and nothing is too much trouble for them. They are friendly , funny & very kind. I honestly felt in really safe hands. Whilst the procedure was not very pleasant it wasn’t painful & nowhere near as bad as I thought. The only down side of the procedure was being able to see how old I actually look & how many cob webs I had in my house! Thank you to all at optical express. If this was my business I couldn’t ask for a better team of people. I am eternally grateful

I visited Optical Express, Cardiff on 14 July 2026 for an initial discussion about laser or lens replacement surgery. The visit lasted roughly two hours. I saw Arjun Chouhan, Patient Advisor, and Jolene Thomas, Optometrist. I had some idea of the costs involved and was in some doubt whether the surgery was necessary, desirable or affordable.
Positives
The young man (I did not catch his name) on Reception was warm, welcoming and helpful. The waiting area was pleasant, and refreshments generous. The appointment started on time with Arjun who conducted an impressive range of eye scans, tests and photographs. He was pleasant, helpful, informative and caring at all times. The tests lasted an hour.
I was then taken to see Jolene (? Spelling) Thomas who carried out further eyesight tests, explained procedures and risks, confirmed the most suitable treatment, and provided a quotation for the surgery. Jolene was pleasant, helpful and efficient, let down by the video she asked me to watch (see below).
Negatives
Jolene Thomas’ clinical professionalism was seriously let down by the Optical Express video, delivered in “talking head” style by a man whose delivery was boring and his message dangerously close to a “hard sell” based on the (as he claimed) unsurpassed excellence of Optical Express. This was depressing and overlong, sapping most of my wavering enthusiasm for the whole process.
Before the appointment a member of the Optical Express team rang me to ask me some preliminary questions about my expectations and medical history. She gave me a ball-park quotation per eye. This was more than I expected, and borderline affordable. The quotation provided at the end of my consultation was just under 40% higher which was well beyond my means. This considerable difference was unexpected.
Summary
Optical Express is an impressive organisation with premises in Cardiff that build confidence, as do their publicity material and their warm, helpful and professional staff. They are offering high cost procedures, with an enviable record of customer satisfaction. However, face-to-face, while there is every effort to avoid any kind of “sales pitch” this is always lurking in the background. This is where their “promotional video” lets them down.
Furthermore, within 24hrs of my appointment I received a follow-up telephone call from Optical Express. In this call I was asked, again, why I was interested in lens replacement surgery. I had answered these questions twice previously, I was then asked about my reaction to the quotation and was offered a 10% reduction. This did not make the procedure any more affordable. I find it annoying to be offered a discount after the appointment. Why cannot Optical Express quote the reduced price at the outset? This removes the image of personal care and concern,emphasisig sales pressure.
