Blood tests €500???
Blood tests - €500?!!!
Went to Cardiac care private on Monday after having chest pains in the night that continued on, care was excellent, I was in and out in 4,5 hours and everyone was friendly and helpful. BUT the wording on the website says 'The initial consultation/attendance fee and ECG for Urgent Cardiac Care is €300.
Should additional tests be required as part of your visit to Urgent Cardiac Care, the cost for your visit is capped at €800. This cost includes the initial consultation charge and routine cardiology testing (but excludes cardiac CT and cardiac MRI)' - so I had an ECG, blood pressure taken, saw the consultant and had blood tests, - did NOT expect to get an additional bill for €500- FOR BLOODS!! Surely this is part of the initial consult fee, and even if not, HOW is it €500? Pity as I would be leaving a 5 star review otherwise
Great experience
Just discharged after a robotic prostatectomy. From the very start all my dealings with the staff were highly professional. Calm efficient and extremely pleasant. Mr O Malley and his dedicated team helped me in every possible way. Thank you all.
Administration needs an overhaul
Drove 3 hours. 30min for an appointment for a procedure in the Mater Private Hospital Dublin at 08.00hrs on Thursday 12.02.2026
checked in 07.55
Name displayed on big screen went to the booth number displayed after my name.
Lady took my personal details and insurance details. I was asked to sign the electronic pad, and told to wait in the same area from where I have come from, and someone would come to me and bring me to the ward.
1 hour later I went back to the booth to the same lady who had taken my details.
I asked if I was forgotten about and she told me that someone would be with me shortly.
2 hours still no one came near me or explained the delay I then went to reception.
Another lady told me to go to the patient's lounge that they were waiting for a bed to admit me!
1 hour later again I went back out to reception, they found a vacant bed.
I went to a ward and there's was 4 empty beds in there.
Done the pre procedure checks etc.
Only for a nurse to tell me they won't be able to proceed until 2pm.
6 hours later I was brought to the operating room.
This area was clean and the medical staff were excellent, professional. Courteous and helpful.
The staff informed me that they were waiting for me at 8am and that the delay was an administrative problem.
When my procedure was finished the theatre staff gave me a discharge note and ordered a porter to collect me from outside the room where I was on a trolley.
One hour later still on the trolley I was going to walk the 5min Walk back to the ward but the theatre staff wouldn't allow me.
Eventually a porter arrived and I was taken back to the ward.
I was offered tea and toast but refused I just got dressed and walked out got into a car the joined the Dublin rush hour traffic.
Arrived home at 19.45.
Administration in the Mater Private Hospital Dublin needs a serious reviewing and overhaul in my opinion.
Disgraceful treatment of vulnerable person
The manner in which my elderly mother was treated in the A&E department of the Mater private was an absolute disgrace.
She went in to the A&E department on the 16th December 2025 after a bad fall in her home.
She had a very bad cut on her right leg. The Triage nurse was quite dismissive and told her that she needed a plastic surgeon and that the Mater private didn't have one. we later discovered that this wasn't true.
Despite my mother's age and the fact that she was in shock, the nurse expected her to hobble around to the Mater public She had no interest in cleaning or dressing the wound on my mother's leg.
She agreed reluctantly to bring my mother around to the mater public
She brought my mother outside into the freezing cold air.
A nurse in the Mater public cleaned and dressed my mother's wound. No plastic surgeon was required.
My mother is still recovering at home at the moment.
The lack of respect, dignity and empathy she received in the Mater private left her badly shaken and humiliated.
She has been attending the Mater private for many years and is under the care of a number of doctors.
The manner in which she was treated was disgraceful.
I would like to thank the mater private…
I would like to thank the mater private for its excellent work and its staff from the reception to the nurses and specialist. I would have had 2 procedures done and carried out by Doctor Andrew Purcell and his staff, in the last 2 weeks, also the music playlist in where the procedure was carried out was top notch, thanks very much to all
Walk In Was Worth It -
I walked into A&E with a shoulder injury after falling off my bike, commuting to work. I waited a couple of hours, but was seen by a nurse first, and then got X-ray and patched up with a prescription and out the door by lunchtime. Very impressed considering the number of people passing through. I understood the problem with my shoulder, got instructions to look after it, and a week later, I got a call from the physio who reassured me that the pain would go away after a few weeks, and he booked me in for a physio appointment.
Very well done
My husband had to have spinal surgery in the Hospital in the last few days. From the date of our Consultation with Mr. Mazhar Iqbal to the completion of the operation we can only give all concerned huge praise. Nikita his Secretary was so understanding and ensured we got the earliest possible date for which we were extremely grateful . From there everything ran so smoothly. All staff in the Hospital were so courteous and respectful to us at all times. Nothing seemed to be an effort. The Hospital was spotless. Despite the reason four our visit it was a very positive experience all round.
Attended to see a consultant that I was…
Attended to see a consultant that I was waiting a long time for my appointment. I was nearly 40 minutes late as my lift let me down but I didn’t cancel as I was waited so long for an appointment. When I got arrived there was no one waiting and I explained to the receptionist and she said to go and get a cup of coffee and she would phone me when she talked to the surgeon, waited 2 and a half hours she never contacted me and left me waiting ,if there was no appointment available she could have just told me
Far better treatment in the Mater Public
I consider that I was treated in an offhand, dismissive way by the doctor who couldn't be bothered with my illness. Discharged after one night but ended up going to the Mater Public the next night and spent 10 days as an in-patient in the Mater Public with the same complaint. I was provided with an awful service and charged over €500 for the one night on top of my VHI.
ENT on Berkeley Road
I was referred to Fergal O'Duffy by my GP to carry out a more detailed examination on my throat. I am by my nature quite a nervous patient but Fergal put me at ease straightaway, made an instant diagnosis and resolved the issue there and then, with minimal fuss and maximum professionalism.
Fergal's receptionist Rachel couldn't have been nicer either, in arranging my appointment and assisting me when I arrived.
Terrible accommodation
Terrible accommodation - any public hospital would have better accommodation and catering. Only reason we went with elderly parents was because they see Mater Private consultants privately for regular check ups. Stayed 3 nights and despite their attempts to keep them longer - we said get better quicker at home / dreading if we need to go back
Good Experience
Attended Mater Private recently as a Day Patient for a Procedure. Would like to thank and compliment the staff who looked after me. All were most helpful and friendly.
Disorganised beyond belief.
Booked in for MRI by consultant. Arrived on time. Booked in. Still waiting an hour after my time and looking at re-scheduling.
If there had been information earlier in the day that there was a change in time, or even on arrival it would be helpful.
I will use Adfidea in the future as I have never had an issue there.
Bad management
I was in the mater private for 3 nights.I go in twice a year My consultant is very good will listen to you want to say. The nurses who give me my infusion I couldn't say enough about her they care for you .
This time I was in a 4 bed room.
the whole place needs updating I couldn't have a shower the curtains needs to be changed at least once a week.
The window blinds are dirty and needs to be replaced.I think you get the message from this because it's about housekeeping. Now there is not enough staff to give good care to people.Last night there was 1 nurse on a lady asked for pain meds it was 2 hours before she got them
For once I didn't hear anything it was this morning both ladies were awake during the night and very upset and I can understand why..Now you would need to pull your socks up .
A Waste of Time And Money
Went in for an emergency examination after being ill for 2 months. Was told at the reception that daily payment fees were capped at €750 a day. Payed the usual €275 to speak with a consultant, who prescribed antibiotics, an anti inflammatory tablet and canestan cream. I could have received all of the above from my GP, without the what I already thought was a hefty fee. My illness continues to worsen now as this was not a solution to my severe bladder issues (not an infection). Then to my surprise, 2 weeks ago a bill of €900 with a minus €400 charge arrived in the mail, "breaking down the costs of the services". The bill could have never been €900 to begin with as they are capped at €750. They "generously" included a €101 ED discount. So broken down, that's nearly €600 for a bladder ultrasound, some IV paracetamol, a simple blood test (not an extensive panel) and a urine sample. All of these services can be provided at a public hospital ED for cheaper/free. The basic urine test alone was €70, but it was given a "sophisticated" sounding title in a poor attempt to justify it's pricing. Do not be fooled, this is the same dipstick test that can be provided by your GP!
Positives:The nurses and doctors are polite and friendly, and instead of a 20 hour wait time in the ER, like in a public hospital, it will be maybe 6 hours of sitting around. The orthopaedic chairs are definitely a lot more comfortable than the hard and broken ones of a public waiting room, that will have people leaving before they are even tended to!
1 hour wait for x-ray in Mater Private
I attended the Radiology Department in the Mater Private Dublin yesterday with a referral letter.
I arrived at 9am. I used a machine to register and it gave me a 15 minute wait time. 45 minutes later and no sign of me being any closer to getting the x-ray, I went to the lady at the desk and told her I had an appointment with my consultant 5 minutes later. She said she'd get me in straight away..... 15 minutes later I had enough. I missed my consultant appointment and still don't have an x-ray. Interestingly I was at the mater public with someone else the day before also for an x-ray and they were seen in 5 minutes. Disgrace! and you pay extra for this treatment.
Google/HSE Review for Mater Hospital…
Google/HSE Review for Mater Hospital Cork – Women’s Health
I recently visited the Mater Hospital Cork for a pre-surgery blood test and had a mixed experience. I want to give special thanks to Marie Murphy, a nurse in the Women’s Health department, who was absolutely amazing. I have a strong fear of needles, and she showed incredible kindness, patience, and understanding. She took the time to help me feel calm and went out of her way to make the process as comfortable as possible.
Unfortunately, I also encountered two other staff members who were not supportive and made me feel judged, which only increased my anxiety. That part was disappointing.
Still, I’m very grateful to Marie for truly saving the day — she’s a credit to the hospital and made a difficult experience much easier.
If I could give a&e no stars I would
If I could give no stars I would, spent seven hours in dublin mater private a&e before finally seen a doctor, waiting tines worse than public hospital next door and charged a crazy fee for worse than bad service. Take my advice go anywhere else but mater private hospital a&e
I would like to take this opportunitu…
I would like to take this opportunitu to thank Mr Karuppiah Mahalingam and his team for the successful bunion surgery. I would like to thank all the dear and harworking nurses and support staff who prepared me for surgery and who took care of me day and night. I would also like to thank the dear psysiotherapists who taught me how to use crutches and what exercises to do at home.I hope that my review will be an encouragement to everyone and bring a smille back to their faces.
My positive experiences
I’ve been attending mater private oncology since 2021. I love it there. I’ve never had any massive wait times. My oncologist and nursing staff are amazing. It’s lovey to see the same lovely friendly familiar faces. They know me and I know them. It’s a very reassuring feeling, when you are vulnerable.
My only negative I have is phlebotomy closes around 4. So on the rare occasions if you have a late appointment you have to wait around. But that’s my only downside.
I’ve also had numerous surgeries over the last 4 years also. The nurses are fab and the porters are gas. They wheel you around for scans etc. But they’re a breath of fresh air. And always in good form. I can honestly say I have never had a bad experience. Be it oncology, radiology or the wards themselves. And the food is excellent. I’ve always had help with my bags upon leaving. So helpful.
