Good potential but immature platform…

Good potential but immature platform with less than stellar support. IT can produce some directional results and the AI output can be helpful in generating ideas, but it seems to have some stability issues when using some of the sharing features. Deleted info and crippled the AI when attempting to share access between student and parent. Support has been almost no help to date in addressing resolution, only providing vague suggestions. I've also noticed their dates on critical submission deadlines to be IN ACCURATE (Dartmouth does not have an ED II). Lot's to clean up, but maybe something for consumers down the road.

Not worth it. Lost $800 During Cancellation.

For any future college applicants, CollegeVine is not worth it. I canceled my sessions after only 2 weeks and lost around $800. In the 2-3 sessions I did have, the only advice I got was "study more" and "make pro/con charts" from someone only 3 years older than I was. I'm writing this review because I suddenly got a spam email from CollegeVine which made me remember the ridiculous refund policy. I'm currently a student at an Ivy League that applied without CollegeVine's help and utilized friends/family/teachers, which provided much more insight than random college students.

I love using CollegeVine

I love using CollegeVine. As a student, it can be very hard to understand the process of college application and all other aspects. CollegeVine opened my eyes to the things that I can do which will make me more successful in the future.

Helpful

Great website, but please consider adding an option for “no honors class available” as well as “no AP class available.”

It's great, can be made better

It's great, but would be much better if you could stop randomizing the school list on the dash. I have 31 schools selected as "considering", and it only shows 10 at a time, and randomly at that. It would be great if you could either choose your 10 schools to display and hide the others, or to just show all schools on the list, or all schools selected as "applying", etc.

A useful college information site...

CollegeVine is a useful site that provides high school advice and chancing profiles. However, I think that some of their chancing is unrealistic (ex. some schools that should be considered target schools are safety or reach schools). Also, I wish that CollegeVine would ask how many AP/IB classes their school has, because some do not have access to AP classes.

CollegeVine

CollegeVine, in my opinion, is a virtual college decision counselor. It truly helped me figure out the colleges that were best for me.

It is such an amazing service! I would recommend it for anyone who wants to see their chancing in College Admissions. It tells you exactly what you need to improve your profile and has amazing software for you to explore colleges with.

Don't trust their algorithms!

Don't trust their algorithms! Similar to another review I read, CollegeVine provided guidance to my daughter for many "Safety" and "Target" schools with LOTS of "Hard Targets". She only got in a SINGLE Safety school that was at the bottom of the list. After talking with her high school counselor (after the fact), she emphatically said that the "Safety" schools they recommended were in fact NOT Safety schools. Her Safety schools had ~25% acceptance rate... that is not a Safety school. All CollegeVine could say is "Sorry" and "her profile fits these schools, so It's just a weird fluke". This has been devastating.

CollegeVine perhaps ruined my…

CollegeVine perhaps ruined my granddaughter's college career with inaccurate, misguided information. Something went terribly wrong with their system or their algorithms or something! Using their advice (after spending $6,000) and applying to colleges which they classified as Safe or Target or Possible, she applied to 18 colleges and was devastated to be rejected by all but 2 "bottom" ones! Now it is too late to apply to other colleges for next year! CollegeVine apologized. They offered no explanation. They offered a partial refund. Money is not the issue. The issue is a child no longer excited about entering college, a child being told, "Just go somewhere you don't like for a year and then you can transfer with no problem." A child who is EXCEPTIONAL (99% SAT and 98% ACT) who now feels mediocre and rejected. Be very, very careful with CollegeVine's advice/mentoring.

CollegeVine "chancing" algorithm is complete junk.

CollegeVine is all about marketing their essay review service. Their "chancing" algorithm is complete crap. Northeastern, for example, pops up as a "safety" school. Maybe it was years ago, but any school that has an acceptance rate of less than 30% is not in any way, shape, or form a safety school. The "chancing" algorithm also is extremely inaccurate and faulty when it comes to factoring in extracurriculars. The site is reasonable for collecting basic information about different colleges, but this information is publicly available through other channels as well. CollegeVine is a nice idea, but take the "chancing" algorithm with a giant grain of salt and be aware that everything is geared towards enticing you to use their essay review service. ("Chancing" says essays account for "25%" of the acceptance decision-making process... so you should send them your essays for a review. Bunch of B.S. as essay importance will vary from school to school and CollegeVine has absolutely no legitimate way of quantifying this for any single school.)

Addendum: In their response, CollegeVine says Northeastern can be a safety school for students with strong profiles. Um, no. Other sources reveal that Northeastern defers large numbers of students with glowing profiles and has an overall acceptance rate of only 30%. This is not a “safety school” for anyone under any definition. That CollegeVine doesn’t recognize this tells you all you need to know. The site is mostly junk and just a vehicle for marketing their essay service. Maybe the latter is decent... I don’t know and, based on their “chancing” b.s. I would never try it.

Reply from CollegeVine

Hi Fred,

We’re sorry to hear that you weren’t satisfied with the CollegeVine platform. While Northeastern University does have a low average acceptance rate, it is possible that it can be a safety school for students with strong profiles.

We’ve worked with over 10,000 students, and in our findings we’ve determined that essays actually do make up a large proportion (25-30%) of the admissions decision for selective colleges. For less selective colleges, however, they do not weigh the essay as much. Many schools have a cutoff for GPA and test scores, so while a student may make it past that first cutoff for GPA and test scores, their essay can be one of the most important factors in gaining acceptance to the school. The essay is one of the few places where students can share their personality and stand out to admissions officers.

With our free essay review, students can get as much feedback as possible on their essays. Our peer reviews help students to get feedback on their own essay, but also serve as an opportunity for them to review their peers’ essays, which can help improve their own writing skills and gain exposure to other college essays.

If you’d like to discuss your concerns further, please don’t hesitate to reach out to support@collegevine.com and we can set up a time to talk.

All the best,
CollegeVine
