Appalling service and complete incompetence. Between May and August 2026, British Gas agreed to payment arrangements four separate times, only to cancel every single one at the last minute.
Their representatives contradict themselves constantly: first agreeing to a plan with no credit file impact, then claiming it doesn't exist, then offering a plan for £29/month, only to withdraw that offer minutes later. On top of that, they break written promises not to call, keep harassing me over the phone, and threaten debt collectors while my account is under an active formal dispute —a clear Ofgem regulatory breach.
Due to their administrative failures and bullying tactics, I have now escalated this matter directly to MP Pippa Heylings. Avoid this company at all costs.

A very clever company, should you have any problems and need to raise a call with them they will reply via a noreply email address and provide no details of how to contact them regarding the issue and then quickly close the call.

⭐ *One Star! Extremely Poor Handling of My Account and Credit File
My experience with British Gas has been extremely frustrating and disappointing.
For over 18 months, I have been trying to get what should have been a straightforward cross-metering and billing issue resolved. Instead of correcting the problem properly, the situation has dragged on, resulted in back-billing, and has now affected my credit file.
I was paying British Gas by Direct Debit, and the payments were being collected successfully. British Gas later discovered that the energy account they had associated with me was actually connected to my neighbour's supply. They then closed and backdated that account, transferred my payments to a newly created account, and changed the payment arrangement to “pay on receipt”.
I did not create the incorrect account. I did not connect my payments to the wrong supply. I did not cancel my Direct Debit. These changes resulted from British Gas trying to correct problems with the account and metering arrangements.
Yet, after all of this, I am now being told that negative payment markers have been placed on my credit file because bills on the replacement/backdated account were supposedly not paid within 14 days.
How is it reasonable to penalise a customer for the consequences of an account and metering problem the customer did not create?
The matter is already with the Energy Ombudsman, and British Gas is aware that the billing and cross-metering issues are disputed. Despite this, I am now having to fight to get adverse credit markers addressed as well.
What is particularly disappointing is the apparent lack of ownership. After more than 18 months, I expected British Gas to resolve the underlying problem not create additional problems for me and then treat the consequences as though they were my fault.
I have asked British Gas to explain why a customer who was actively paying by Direct Debit should receive adverse credit markers after British Gas closed and retrospectively reconstructed the account.
This has gone far beyond poor customer service. An unresolved billing problem is one thing; allowing the consequences of that unresolved problem to potentially damage a customer's credit record is another.
Based on my experience, one star is more than justified.

Yet again booked weeks ago so that I was at home from work,to get the normal telephone call to say it’s been cancelled due to emergency breakdowns.
My husband classed as disabled so let’s hope our boiler does break then otherwise no hot water to wash him in!
Was going to ask if we could have someone out to give a quote forecast con, but not now there are plenty of other companies.

My dad died and trying to change the account over to my surviving Mum was horrific. Every time I got in touch something went wrong. It is very difficult and takes literally hours to speak to someone. After hours and tears it is still wrong! They are appalling.

A Home care complaint and a lost customer who will now not renew after having been a customer for over 10 years
My 90 year old Mum called these Muppets to arrange for a battery change in a wired smoke alarm and she was declined and advised to call a 3rd party to arrange it AND pay for it despite paying over £500 a year.
They HAVE offered this service to my Mum at least once previously which is why she contacted them again.
Disgusting customer service but this will serve us to go elsewhere so there loss ultimately.
