Dear Annette,

We’re happy we could help you secure a PPP loan earlier this year and hope the funds were helpful. We apologize that we were unable to facilitate an SBA 7(a) loan for your business. Initially, the paperwork was incomplete and our team was unable to move forward for some time. There were multiple applications submitted as well including an application submitted incorrectly for a non owner of the business. Ultimately, the credit score required by banks in the SmartBiz network for an SBA loan was not met. You should have received an email with additional information about your application.

Very Satisfied

Although the process requires a lot of documentation, our relationship manager was very helpful in helping us gathering the necessary documents -and patient by the way- and answering all of our questions in a timely manner. We are very satisfied with the service and impressed with the speed of the entire process.

SmartBiz helps with our growing pains

Our healthcare business had been growing very quickly over the past 4 years. We had been using short term financing to fill our financial needs during this period, but it was becoming too expensive. We turned to SmartBiz for help and they delivered! We would like to recognize Chris Schreiber on their team for all of the work he put in to get this SBA loan approved. Thanks to SmartBiz we have freed up the capital we need to continue growing.

I have been personally contacted by…

SmartBiz... we were failed by this company. I don’t know if I’ll ever get the $83.700.00 in PPP that could really help my business, but I will keep my fingers crossed.

On or about 7/14 I received a phone call from someone in the legal department. I believe this was because of the 2 negative reviews I posted. This individual told me that the reason I could complete my application was because I did not get it in on time. Although I submitted it well before the cutoff date of May 31st. I explained to them that this is not true and relayed everything I did from 5/27 – 5/31 and the email exchanges. I also let them know I was filing a complaint with the SBA and Washington State Attorney General. They did not apologize and dismissed me out of hand. I was shocked and appalled that someone would call and lie to me from the legal department of SmartBiz.

Because we could not move forward, I then looked up a way to get it processed from the SBA site and SmartBiz was at the top of the list. May 27st, 2021 I started my application and proceeded to through their process. After clearing all the hurdles and submitting all documentation I came to the “Bank Verification” page. I submitted my account and routing numbers into the form. I received a notification that the numbers were incorrect. I double checked the numbers and again, called my bank to confirm and received the same notification.
Note: I am not unfamiliar with computers, Browsers or the internet because I worked for Microsoft from 2009 -2014 and ran a partner division as a Sr. Director.

SmartBiz allowed me to save my work so after saving it I restarted by browser, logged in and continued working. I was able to enter my bank information but this time I received a message that they could not securely connect because the banks security protocol was outdated. This seem odd to me considering I had just had a vendor complete a direct deposit into my business account. I also called the bank again to confirm this and they assured me that the Two-Factor Verification process was update and working properly.

I tried again and received the same message. My guess is that SmartBiz did not have the proper protocols updated or in place for Washington Trust and possibly other banks as well. I immediately called the number on their website 1.866.283.8726. After listening to the message that directed me to the PPP department, I left a message. In turn I emailed support at smartbiz

In short SmartBiz failed me and others.

To the reply below. I met all the qualifications, the issue was your back end could not verity the account. After talking to my bank in detail, they did not understand why your system could not connect when others could and did. I personally know someone that went through another 3 party provider at the same bank and they were processed. Their loan was done 1 day after mine. After talking with the SBA as well, you should have called and done everything you could to verify the bank account and not just left it to automation. Once the application was submitted, you were responsible to complete the application process. You Failed and I did get a call. My girlfriend was standing right there while the phone was on speaker. It may have not been the legal dept. but it was one of your reps. I can see from others they had the same issue or other issues. I hope that the letters sent to the CA AG, SBA and my political reps find their way to your door. Again... you and your company failed.

Reply from SmartBiz Bank, N.A.

Dear David,

We understand your frustration and apologize that we were unable to assist you with the PPP application process. We’ve reviewed your application closely and it appears that we were unable to verify your bank account prior to the program expiring. This is an important step required by the banks in the SmartBiz network. Because of this, we were unable to move forward with your application. There are no records of a phone call to you from the SmartBiz legal team.

SmartBiz is a service provider to banks and does not define the lending requirements or make the final lending decision. The bank specifies the qualification requirements potential customers need to meet, and the required documentation, customer identity validation and the number and types of checks. Because of an extremely high number of potentially fraudulent applications, banks in the SmartBiz network required additional screening, including enhanced bank account verification. With only a few days left in the program before you applied, there was not enough time to verify your bank account information to meet bank requirements. Again, we are sorry we could not help and wish you the best of luck.

They are the most unprofessional…

They are the most unprofessional company that I’ve ever worked with. I worked with them as a broker for the PPP. Only about about 20 of my 300 clients were approved and honestly I don’t believe they submitted them as this was the second draw for many of them. Their process should have been easier. They didn’t even send decline notices. They kept these people holding on to hope for months until the program timed out. On top of all of this, it is now 6 months after the program ended and I haven’t received one Broker’s fee for my clients. They are supposed to pay out in 2 weeks… they also lied about the percentage they would pay brokers. It’s publicized as 2% in their dashboard. They’ve decided to pay 1% - if they ever pay. SmartBiz is in one word terrible.
