Kam Balaggan Consultant Cataract and Vitreoretinal Surgeon Reviews 

I had a pars plana vitrectomy in my left eye on 8th February, I had the same procedure in my right eye on 2nd January 2021, also with Mr Balaggan.
Anybody who has tried unsuccessfully to live with the day to day complete misery of a Weiss ring floater and then the absolute unspeakable joy of having it taken away forever will understand me when I say that this is the 2nd time Mr Balaggan has given me my life back.
I had general anaesthetic for my 1st vitrectomy because I was so nervous but Mr Balaggan recommended sedation this time as in between the 2 vitrectomies I have had cataract procedures in both eyes with sedation only.
I can honestly say I felt absolutely nothing and could only hear the odd word or two between Mr Balaggan and his team so I would very much recommend sedation as the best choice for eye surgery.
12 days on my vision is so amazing I can't quite believe it, I think after being so miserable for months I am a little in shock to be honest.

Mr Ballaggan's skills as a surgeon and rapport with patients is impressive.

On my first contact he fitted me in for an initial appointment at the end of his list that day and arranged surgery for my detached retina 36 hrs. hours later, demonstrating the urgency the illness requires.

Kam Balaggan operated on my cataract, caused by a severely detached retina last year (repaired by another excellent surgeon). Amazingly, my operated eye now sees better than it did 45 years ago! This is thanks to a superb job by Mr Balaggan, using a state-of-the art lens which has corrected my astigmatism as well as giving me pin-sharp vision. I never dreamt of seeing that well through that eye again. I naturally have no hesitation in recommending Mr Balaggan.

Having recently had both eyes done with trifocal Zeiss lens by Mr Balaggan my vision is now beyond belief, better than 20/20 vision if that’s possible. Going from total fear to complete confidence in both operations,I would be more than pleased if asked who would I recommend for cataract surgery, no hesitation 100% Mr Balaggan. I’ve had cataracts in both my left and right eye removed and am absolutely thrilled with the results. My vision is now better than 20/20 and can’t speak highly enough of Mr Kam Balaggan my consultant and surgeon. I would without hesitation recommend him.

As a photographer, the loss of my sight through cataracts was not good news. Prior to surgery, Mr Balaggan provided the time to explain in detail the procedure required for both eyes, to a) remove the cataracts and b) correct some other defects. The surgery that followed didn't simply result in the restoration of my vision, owing to the expertise of Mr Ballaggan he recommended specialised lenses which would correct other areas of my vision. Weeks on from the surgery I now have superb short, medium and long vision. The world is a much more colourful brighter and vibrant place. I have worn reading aids for about thirty years, as a result of surgery I no longer require spectacles. Amazing ! Thank you Kam, and your excellent team at the Nuffield Hospital, Wolverhampton.

Thanks to Mr. Balaggan, who has recently performed my cataract procedures, I have vastly improved vision (20/20), and my eyesight is better now than it has been for most of my adult life. For the first time in many years, I am no longer dependent on spectacles to function and I only need glasses for very small print. I marvel at this superb result every day.

The first (and subsequent) appointments were promptly arranged and maintained. The appointment for the second operation was brought forward, clearly to my benefit. At the first meeting Mr Balaggan carried out a detailed examination and recommended an operation on both eyes. His explanations were clear and detailed and he fully answered all questions.
The actual operations were carried out without any problems and a good recovery period was given thereafter.
I must, also, compliment the operation team who were pleasant and very professional.
At the post operative consultations with Mr Balaggan I was very pleased to have confirmation of the considerable improvement in my eyesight. For the first time in 75 years, I no longer need glasses for long distance vision!

First of all wow, just wow!from being nearly -20 vision with acute astigmatism I can now say following two procedures in December I now have unaided 20/20 for the first time in my life .For anybody with some anxiety or worries my procedures(actual theatre time)were completed around 15 minutes each, I saw Doctor Balaggan not only in the consultation process but also before the procedures on the day, he and his staff at the Nuffield Wolverhampton have been nothing but excellent and very caring. I can’t remember all the names but special mention goes out to Luke for wheeling me down to theatre and making me laugh at the same time and also for Ruby for the after-care treatment .
Dr Balaggan on consultation had recommended special lenses which would sort out the astigmatism and obtain excellent distance vision, which is exactly what I wanted, these took a little time to arrive as they were especially ordered from Germany and I was kept up to date by his secretary Debbie , Debbie also helped with any queries/anxieties I had before the treatment and was excellent at doing so.

Finally my I say that I now have excellent in-depth vision in both eyes and the colours I now see are amazing, I am particularly overwhelmed as I have had poor vision all my life and up till now I have always required contact lenses/spectacles all the time . Yesterday I saw Doctor Balaggan final post-op consult and all is well .I am truly grateful to all,regards Graham

My first cataract was completed in September, my second in November - I am absolutely delighted with the results of the procedures. I no longer need my glasses! I have worn those all the time for as long as I can remember. I do now need some for reading and I have just ordered those this week - small compromise considering the fantastic results of the surgery!

On my first consultation Mr Balaggan explained the procedure and the various lenses available plus advised on the best solution for myself. I felt very well looked after while in his care during both surgeries. I had felt very apprehensive about the surgery but need not have done!

In January 2024 I was diagnosed with a macular hole in my left eye. After some confusion from Axa I was eventually referred to Mr Balaggan at Spire Hospital, Little Aston. He was able to give a clear explanation of the condition and recommended corrective surgery, which he performed in June 2024. The victrectomy was successful. Mr Balaggan had informed me that a side effect of the surgery might include the left eye developing a cataract, which it did by September. In a further consultation with Mr Balaggan, he explained the benefits of enhanced monofocal toric lenses being applied to both eyes. I elected to have these lenses. Mr Balaggan performed the cataract surgery at the Wolverhampton Nuffield Hospital.

I am really pleased with the results. I have been wearing glasses since the age of 7, but now I am able to do mosts tasks without them. I still need glasses for reading. The repair to the macular hole has worked well and the left eye seems to be improving over time.

I am very, very short-sighted, around -14 in both eyes, I had a stroke two years ago and I am now on blood thinners, I have atrial fibrillation, suffer from astigmatism and I needed a cataract operation on both eyes. Mr Balaggan was recommended as the surgeon to carry the operations out due to this complexity..
His helpful and courteous manner, his explanations of what he proposed to do and what he recommended as to the lenses I needed was exemplary.
Everything happened as he described it and I am very happy with my resulting vision after the operations.

I attended Spires; Little Aston; under the care of Mr K Balaggan . He performed cataract surgery on both my eyes on two separate dates. Mr Balaggan was very professional with a genuine caring approach. He was extremely knowledgeable with a wealth of experience. It took me two years to find right surgeon for my eyes I’m 78 years old and well into sport especially clay pigeon shooting at a reasonable level, when mr ed Lyons told me i must proceed with opp i was seriously nervous until i met with kam ballagan he gave me the confidence to agree his option went ahead imidiataley

I recently had my second operation by Mr Balaggan. This time it was my right eye, cataract removal and lens insertion. After years of wearing spectacles all the time, I now only have to wear reading glasses. Mr Balaggan is the perfect surgeon who looks after his patients.

The boss lady and I have both had our cataracts dealt with by Mr Balaggan in the past couple of months. Mrs W had slow growing cataracts which had developed over many years whilst mine had developed very quickly over a matter of months.

When our optometrist advised it was time to have them dealt with off went Mrs W to research all the available consultants in the area. She was most impressed with Mr Balaggan's experience and credentials. Mr Balaggan was just as impressive in person, both his subject knowledge and experience are outstanding, and he has such a calm, reassuring manner. We immediately felt we were in safe hands.
Mr Balaggan went through the pros and cons of the procedure, making sure we were aware of possible risks, as well as the differing lenses he could offer.

The boss had toric tri-focal lenses which meant that after over 50 years of wearing glasses she now has 20/20 vision - an excellent outcome. One major disadvantage Mr Balaggan forgot to mention is the boss can now see a speck of dust or a dirty mark at 20 paces, which means no more cutting corners when its my turn to vacuum!

I had slightly different lenses, as being diabetic there is a possibility I may need further eye surgery in the future. Despite this, I also now have 20/20 vision.

I must also mention Mr Balaggan's secretary Debbie. She is always cheerful, and liaison and communication between her, patients and the hospital seems to be very efficient.

Mrs W and I have no hesitation in recommending Mr Balaggan.

This man is incredible, empathetic,calming, skillful and keeps you fully informed. My case was difficult due to narrow angle issue causing pressure in my eye to raise, whilst I had to have treatment to reduce this first I then had cataract surgery replacing my lens which so far is all good. I am so thankful to this man for giving me my sight back.

I initially contacted Mr Kam Balaggan through recommendations, he treated my macular hole in my left eye that was totally painless and following recommended recovery guidelines resulted in a full and successful process. A follow-up cataract operation using distance and intermediate insert was again totally painless. Two days after surgery my eyesight started to recover and continued to improve so much that I no longer need glasses except for reading. I can not thank Mr Balaggan enough, an exceptional expert in his field together with a pleasant and professional personality. I highly recommend him.
