DO NOT RENT FROM JUMBO CAR RENTAL IN…
DO NOT RENT FROM JUMBO CAR RENTAL IN COSTA RICA. THEY WILL SCAM YOU. My experience with this company was absolutely appalling.
Our rental vehicle suffered a clutch failure during normal use. Instead of addressing the situation professionally, Jumbo charged my credit card $1,400 for towing and repairs without my authorization and without even responding to my messages. They simply took the money and ignored me.
The vehicle had more than 56,000 km, and the clutch is a wear component. Jumbo nevertheless attempted to make me responsible for the failure without providing a credible explanation or giving me any opportunity to resolve the matter.
This is not customer service. They bully customers with unauthorized charges and hope they won't fight back. I have disputed the entire charge with my credit card.
If you are considering renting a car in Costa Rica, take my advice and rent from another company. The risk of being hit with an outrageous charge after the rental is simply not worth it. I would NEVER rent from Jumbo again.
Extremely disappointing emergency response
Extremely disappointing emergency response from Jumbo Car Rental.
Our rental vehicle broke down last night on a steep road marked for 4x4 vehicles only. It was dark and raining, and we had to walk uphill and downhill carrying our groceries because we were left without transportation.
We contacted Jumbo and were told they opened at 7:00 a.m. At 9:30 a.m., they had still not arranged a replacement vehicle or towing for the broken one.
We are only in Costa Rica for three days. We had a tour booked at Manuel Antonio National Park today, but it could not be rescheduled. Because Jumbo failed to assist us promptly, we lost the tour and are losing one-third of our vacation waiting for help.
Mechanical problems can happen to any vehicle. The real measure of a rental company is how it responds when customers are stranded. So far, Jumbo’s response has been completely unacceptable.
At the time of writing, we are still waiting. We are asking Jumbo to arrange the immediate towing of its disabled vehicle, provide us with a safe replacement, refund us for the entire period we were left without a usable rental car, and reimburse the cost of the nonrefundable Manuel Antonio tour we missed as a direct result of the delayed assistance. We will update this review to explain how Jumbo ultimately resolves the situation.
Caution! broken clutch, lack of car maintenance – not cooperative agency!
I rented a manual 4x4 Jimny for two weeks at Jumbo Car through an agency in Germany; after 100 km, the clutch failed, and the car had to be towed.
I had already noticed that the gear shifting was a bit stiff and the reverse gear would sometimes fall out. My advice: go back immediately—don't wait! The company was super uncooperative:
Issues involving manual transmission damage have to be settled directly with Jumbo Car. I asked for a replacement vehicle but was told I would have to pay $2,000. They were uncooperative, made false claims, and blamed me for the damage. Of course, it is impossible to ruin a transmission in such a short time. I had to fight just to be present during the inspection; they simply wanted to drop off a new car for a fee—a cost I would have had to cover myself.
The inspection results and the way they acted pointed to a lack of maintenance. However, Jumbo Car refused to release data regarding the vehicle and continued to insist that I pay the $2,000. When I refused to agree to this, they terminated the contract, ordered me off the premises, and threatened to call the police. Later, I resolved the matter with the German agency and emailed Jumbo Car headquarters—and suddenly, my deposit was refunded.
Since they still refused to provide a replacement car, the only way I could get a refund for the full rental period was by disputing the charge via my credit card. My vacation was ruined; never again with this branch!
Great expirience
I was worried when I read all the negative reviews on trustpilot since I only checked the reviews on Google and the third party website where we booked the car. So I wrote them via WhatsApp whether there are any additional fees or insurance but there werent any. There also werent any issues in returning the car we got our whole deposit, while driving aproximatly 1200km through whole country. Taking the car aswell as returning the car was very easy, the car was in great shape, had everything you need, got through the worst roads with ease and the price for 2 weeks was unbeatable (we payed 250€, but if we would have booked it a day before it would have obly been 190€ (June, offseason). Maybe just write the via WhatsApp (number can be found on there website) and there shouldnt be any issues, by my expirience.
this is the worst experience I’ve ever…
this is the worst experience I’ve ever had with any kind of customer service. I was planning on doing a very long-term rental and before driving off the lot I wanted to make sure that I could connect the Bluetooth and CarPlay and long story short the worker there MIchael (emmanuel is his real name come to find out later) was extremely rude to me when i asked for help he was very inpatient and said some really rude things and walked away mid-needing help getting the car set up in order to drive off the lot. i was in such disbelief at how he was treating a young girl needing help (they just don’t care about you once they get your payment) I ended up not feeling comfortable paying so much money for a very long-term rental if I could not get the Bluetooth or CarPlay to work so I ended up calling customer service and saying I needed help because I should be having a car where the Bluetooth or CarPlay works, and they were even worse than the employee being extremely rude and calling me names, I felt so uncomfortable as a young woman all by myself I ended up returning the car and going next-door to budget. They were extremely helpful and friendly and amazing customer service. I couldn’t believe the words that I was being called and how I was being treated at jumbo they have a very poor rating for a reason and I’m surprised that they have not figured out the way to make more money is to be better at customer service. They should care if their cars work and their customers feel safe, driving them.
Bad sevice policies
Good car, friendly and responsive service presonnel. They charged me 1600$ for replacing a lost car key (where other agencies would charge around 600$)
Also when I wanted to extend my contract they couldn't adjust the price to the low season rates (half price of the originial prices) unless I cam physically to the agency. The service policies are rigid and not customer friendly!

Excellent Experience with Jumbo Car in Costa Rica
Before renting, I researched Jumbo Car online and came across some negative reviews, mostly complaints about hidden fees and unexpected taxes — especially from customers who booked through third-party sites like Booking and Rentcars.
I followed a tip I found online: contact the company directly, without intermediaries. I reached out via WhatsApp and was promptly assisted. All my questions were answered, and I received a clear and honest quote.
Upon arriving in Costa Rica, everything went smoothly. The car I received matched the quote exactly, the prices were as agreed, and there were no extra charges. The vehicle was new and in excellent condition.
The experience was flawless from start to finish. The staff’s politeness and warm welcome were a bonus that made everything even better.
Bottom line:
Talk directly with then. Avoid thirdparty sites.

Worst rental experience ever.
Worst rental experience ever.
We took full insurance… a tree fell on the car due to bad weather and bad condition of the tree. Sorry they answered not insured. 1200€ was taken from our credit card and we were forced to continue our holiday with the broken back window.
Another car would cost us another ‘insurance’
What a scam! Do not trust them! We had a discussion when we delivered the car and the ‘manager’ locked his door and didn’t want to help us any further. He even prohibited us for taking the bus to the airport. We had to take a taxi.
Never again and trust me do not rent at Jumbo Car Costa Rica
In fact we had an insurance for 2 drivers myself and Wim Ollieuz.
The police came and made a report of what has happened.
Anyway the help we got from Jumbo Cars was no help.
That’s very awkward , the car next to us was rented at Sunny Cars. The same day they got another car and were insured for all damage. Speaking of help?
That was said to us: full insurance. Once the damage was done… no insurance.
Never again Jumbo Cars

Quick and efficient service
Quick and efficient service. When we arrived there were people who have reviewed badly here telling everyone it was a scam. This is not the case. Everything was fine for us. We had plenty of time to check the car. There were minor points of damage which were agreed. The car worked fine, we started with half a tank and dropped it off with half a tank. No extra charges. The staff were polite and helpful and we could find no faults with them or the service.
Jumbo car is a scam
Jumbo car is a scam. Do not rent from them. They charged $600 for a ding smaller than a dime on the windshield which we are almost positive it was there when we got it since it was nighttime when we picked up the car. They made us pay for a whole new windshield and screwed multiple people also in line with us. Staff is rude and the place is horrible!!!! Go with a well known company do not use Jumbo car EVER. Worst experience in 25 years of traveling and renting cars!!! They also said it was illegal to just repair the small ding on the windshield which after researching was a lie. They do not need to charge $600 for a full windshield just another of many lies they told.also
Read three other reviews on here about their windows. Again they are thief’s and scammers. DO NOT RENT from them!!!!!!

Deposit was 1200$ instead of the 200$ stated at check24 where I booked. I'm still waiting for the Deposit to be released (returned the car Mar 7th). @Jumbo Car, when will the Money be back in my Account? At the Counter they said the Deposit was released the same Day. Other than that everything was fine.
Edit: 1 Star down; No Money, no response yet
Edit No. 2: quick reply after changing the review to 2 Stars - I'll get in touch with my Bank. If everything is alright and I'm waiting for my own bank, I will adjust the review again - car, service and price was all good

The staff at jumbo rental cars are criminals and will steal your money. They charge high deposits for the rental and try to keep it. They are also known for keeping bank card information.
The staff at Dumbo Jumbo rental cars are scam artist they tried to charge me a $2000.00 usd for a deposit forcing me to down grade to a smaller vehicle with no compensation to reduce the deposit to $1200.00 usd. When I paid the deposit I was told that the money would be returned when I brought the car back. I immediately realized that it sounded suspicious but I already had everything booked through Expedia including a hotel 5 hours and needed a vehicle to transport my family there so I took a chance paying the deposit because I couldn’t get a refund. When I brought the car back a worker told me the funds would be transferred back into my account instantly and I would receive the funds after the bank approved it. I waited a few days and the money was not there so called my bank and was informed jumbo cars never initiated the transaction. I spoke with a lady named Vanessa claiming to be the supervisor who was very rude. She told me she would send me proof through WhatsApp to give to the bank in attempt to throw the blame on them. I she sent me a bogus receipt that had no useful information and prove nothing. I currently have an investigation on jumbo rental car because they are trying to steal my $1200.00 deposit.

I had a very disappointing experience…
I had a very disappointing experience with Jumbo car rental. When returning the vehicle, the staff was extremely unhelpful and unprofessional. They kept a photocopy of my credit card and refused to destroy it, even after I expressed my concerns about security. I requested a document stating that they were keeping my credit card information, but they also refused to provide it. This practice is highly questionable and untrustworthy. The customer service was far from satisfactory. I do not recommend renting a car from Jumbo.
Great experience with Jumbo car
Really great experience with my car rental in Costa Rica with Jumbo car.
We were supposed to have a suzuki vitara but we had a better one, a geely, which was good because the roads in Costa Rica can be tricky to manage without a proper 4x4.
The staff were nice, deposit was returned on time, no surprise, I recommand!
Great new cars, and Great customer service!
We had a Great experience with Jumbo rental car company! The staff were waiting for us at the airport, they were very helpful and knowledgeable. They just opened this car rental company in Liberia by the airport.
We come to Costa Rica regularly and this will be this new rental company. We are very impressed with their costumer service!
Would recommend no one go through this…
Would recommend no one go through this company.
The car broke down, terrible service and increased charges.
1. They did not pick us up at the arranged time from the airport. They were one hour late, despite us calling them that we had arrived and they stated they were “five minutes away”
2. They charged us two hire car deposits rather than one, and did not return our hire car deposit. Following the return to our home country it took our bank 2 weeks to return the money to our accounts.
3. The break pad fell off the Suzuki jimney in the middle of the jungle, and the breaks failed. After taking it to a mechanic and they assessed the problem. Jumbo car took 3 hours to respond to us notifying them of the problem, and did not provide support. Despite approval; the receipt, we still paid the repair out of our own pocket.
4. They charged us for a tiny crack on the windshield, saying it was $445 dollars, and upon charging us charged $455. When told they charged the incorrect amount; they “refunded” the $455 but it never came through and charged an additional $445.
They took our money, provided us with an unsafe car and failed to provide the service as promised.
I would suggest not going with this company.
It was a scam

Liars and crooks!!! BE AWARE! Dont rent a car from them!
These people are real crooks. They charged us for a windshield crack/dot on the windshield that we didnot do!
When we took the car, the guy doing the inspection did not inspect the windshield. He went around with a clip board and just observed the body of the car which by had scratches and damages. This was not a new car, it had prior damage and had 38,000 km on it. We took pictures of the damages on the body of the car, but he didnt look at the windshield at all or point out this "dot."
We drove the car locally, and did not have any rock as they claim hit the windshield. If we did we would gladly report and pay for it!
Well we returned the car after 3 days, and they went to do the inspection of the car and magically found this "dot" on the windshield which she couldnt even see without leaning it and cleaning the windshield.
They are passing other peoples damages on to us, and charging us $435 bucks for something we didnt even do! They also charged us insurance for each day but said that the windshield isnt covered. The guy who inspected the car, was there and he said he inspected the body of the car which we followed him while he was doing it and when asked if he checked the windshield, he didnt want to say anything. He didnt even check!!!!!!
We will be disputing with Expedia and will report them to banks, and all over the net!
BE AWARE of these crooks!
Dont bother responding to our review unless you got proof, which you dont! The guy inspecting did not take pictures or even look at the windshield!

Absolute shambles of a company. They prey on holidaymakers especially families. Read the reviews before renting.
I’d give 0 if possible.
We hired through them with Jumbo car rental in San Jose, Costa Rica. The car started making noises mainly on braking within 50kms but we were on our way to catch a ferry. When we retrieved the car 2 days later, the noises persisted intermittently. We reported it and were asked to submit a recording. Bizarrely they banned us from driving the car and would only supply us with a new one if we agreed to pay an extortionate sum of money whilst they ‘inspected’ the car. Rather than have a local mechanic assess it, they insisted upon sending a collection truck at our expense. Nearly a week later their mechanic finally came back with a diagnosis of overheated brakes which cost them $40 to resolve. We were charged $900 for this and the collection, when it was neither our fault and equally could have been addressed by a local mechanic. We had done less than 300km in total in the car on the flat with no accident.
Clearly looking at other reviews, this is a tactic they use especially with families with young children. This behaviour is extremely despicable and the owner should not be allowed to trade.
Use at your peril.

Excellent service and good vehicle
Rented a 4x4 for 2-weeks in June. Jumbo impressed me with their professional staff; clean office, and pristinely clean vehicle. I had a puncture during my trip (there was a spare and a jack the boot) and I was even more impressed when they didn’t charge me any extra for using the spare. I don’t usually leave reviews for car hire companies but felt compelled to because of their excellent service.
