Written by the company

Icerental 4x4 is an innovative car rental company specializing in 4x4 vehicles in Iceland. Founded in 2013, our family-owned business began with only 10 cars. Since then, Icerental 4x4 has grown a lot, with a big rental office near the Keflavik International Airport, where we offer a wide range of vehicles in all sizes and model years. Our passion is 4x4, and our fleet is based on quality 4x4 cars. However, we also provide vans and smaller vehicles to fulfill all your transportation needs while visiting Iceland. In 2014 we started with our Camper Jeep, offering Jeeps to camp in while exploring the highlands. This idea evolved into Roof Tent campers, and in 2017, we introduced our Roof Tent vehicles in various sizes. These are the perfect way to explore Iceland during the summertime—our 4x4 Roof Tent vehicles allow you to see the highlands and Iceland’s untouched nature. We at Icerental 4x4 are committed to offering the best quality 4x4 vehicles at reasonable rates. We believe in personal service based on building relationships with our customers.

Use any other car rental company but…

Use any other car rental company but these. Originally booked with Reykjavic Cars who moved our hire to this bunch of cowboys. Tried to charge over £1100.00 for damage to a wing mirror. Claimed the replacement part was £400 plus it having to be spray painted. A complete new side mirror would cost less than £100. When does a plastic cover need spray painting? When challenged they provided estimates from garages which were exactly the same and a joke.

Be careful with them

When booking, youre pushed to choose Platinum insurance cover with a promise that it covers all possible damages etc. Then when taking over the car, they tell you it doesn't cover the most usual damages (door scratched etc) so you'll still have liability. So not really a full platinum cover.
When we picked up the car, we took pics of everything incl fuel. When returning, we had even more fuel than at the start but the sales man tried to convince us we left less fuel and showed us a picture from.another car and obviously thought we were lying. When we showed him our picture evidence, he said "he will let us off this time"...he was just trying to scam us into paying more, very unpleasant experience!!!

AVOID

The car was reliable on our trip, save for several rust spots and small dents, but the service at Icerental 4x4 was not a good experience at all.

On returning the vehicle, I reported some damage done to the bodywork of the vehicle (one done by another person, and one by me). The conduct of the staff at reception in relation to the conversation over this was very aggressive and they refused to answer our questions regarding insurance cover until we had paid the thousands of pounds they charged us.
The whole experience felt very scam-like and my partner and I immediately lost trust in them. Especially as they were very confusing with their explanations when we asked them to clarify some details, which we have also found out out to be contradictory and, in some instances, false (based on what was explained on pick-up and booking) since we've been trying to sort the issue back in our home country.

I saw the staff use the same conduct with 2 other customers who were having similar issues at the reception, whilst I was waiting for the airport shuttle bus to arrive.

We are left feeling more confused and scammed after this experience, which made a sour end to our otherwise amazing trip to Iceland.
This negative review is not about the fact we had to pay for damage. The issue is that there was absolutely zero support in answering our questions, the staff had a very aggressive and dismissive attitude towards us, there were some major bits of misinformation and being pressured to make a payment without being allowed to have a conversation about it first.

The price they charged us seems very steep, especially for the fact that the dent created by another driver knocking their door into the car is smaller than a rust spot that was on the car prior to pick up. It was so small, they hadn't noticed it until I pointed it out.

We are still hoping to resolve the issue through the booking company Northbound, but we honestly don't have a lot of hope considering who we dealt with on that day.

Good first experience renting an RV! Really good option to discover Iceland at your pace.

Overall good experience renting an RV (our model was a Citroën Forster Van 599) for the first time.

We waited for the company representative at the arrivals hall until we decided to call the number as we couldn´t find it...finally Etienne arrived (obrigado!) and he transfered us to the company location (5-10 minutes ride) where we finished the booking process quite fast. Only negative point is that at the last minute we were informed that if we didn´t pay 81€ in case of having any trouble and needed assistance the company will charge 4€ per km as an assistance tax....of course we paid the 81€ without hesitation...

The RV was in good condition with everything we had booked....two workers were showing us the van and how to use the gas, heating system, etc...it was a lot of information but then it was easy to manage everything.

Be sure to check the condition of the RV both inside/outsaide as well as the bed clothing etc. before you leave the parking lot. I strongly recommend to book the premium insurance to avoid any trouble and spend much more money!

Never Again

Long overdue review. Overall I would use any other rental service than this one and wish I did.
When we were stranded in the middle of the night there was little they did to help us besides a phone call. We eventually found a tow truck thanks to other research we did, mind you this was like 1:00am on a highway.
When we did get another rental car with them to continue our trip this car had a hole in the tire we found after driving away. It was rainy season and having a tire to constantly fill with air was dangerous. When the car was returned after one day they refused to take accountability for the preexisting hole and proceeded to overcharge a horrendous amount of money for an almost invisible "dent" that was there when we got the car, citing maybe it was "how I opened it too fast". We only had it parked in Reykjavik one night and it was impossible we were responsible for it.
Their cars had visible wear and tear inside and outside, so why do they charge so much to fix any damage if the cars do not get fixed?
Upon returning the car we saw we were not the only ones this was happening to. We saw other customers in line having to "show them their pictures" they took of the car, when the staff were attempting to charge them exorbitant fees for damages as well.
Overall, definitely trust the bad reviews. Their reputation for looking for any damage they can to charge people is well founded, and because of the state of their cars I wonder why the fees don't go to repairing them. I would greatly advise to avoid this company in particular for multiple reasons to have a better travel experience and no unwanted hassles. Never renting from them again.

They may be cheap, but they are older vehicles.d with this car…

I was a bit disappointed with this car hire company, as we had to wait for over an hour on arrival because there was only one 8-seater shuttle for about 20 people.
The car was as booked, a Dacia Duster 4x4, but unfortunately it was already 13 years old and had nearly 385,000 km on the clock.
The vehicle sounded exactly as you’d expect.
Fortunately, it survived our 11-day trip and everything went smoothly when we returned it, with no waiting involved.
I’d probably book elsewhere next time.

Company holding on to Insurance Excess.

Accepted responsibility for a damaged wing mirror. £900 taken as excess. Assured repair wouldn't take long and difference between excess and repair would be refunded. Cost of part on Amazon £14.00 and repair on Youtube takes minutes. Keep being told by Icerental 4x4 that they are waiting for repair to be done. Started Dispute with Credit Card Company.

This was by far my worst experience with rental company

This was by far my worst experience with a car rental company, and in my opinion this business operates by trying to squeeze money out of customers under any pretext.

I had an incident that was not my fault, and despite having purchased the highest insurance coverage, they still tried to charge me for the damaged door. First, I was told the amount was €2800, and after their so-called “discount” related to the insurance I had bought, they still wanted €1700 from me. After looking into it more carefully and speaking with local people, I found out that such a repair should cost many times less (around €200), so the whole valuation looked to me like an attempt to extort money.

The worst part, however, was not just the demand for this absurd amount, but the way I was treated. When I said that I could not afford to pay such a ridiculous sum immediately, I was told things like I should “take out a loan” or “borrow from family and friends,” otherwise they would not let me leave, which amounts to unlawful detention. On top of that, I was threatened with court and the police, and later it turned out that even regarding the alleged huge procedural costs, they were saying things that, after a quick verification, had no basis in reality.

I particularly remember Mr. Olek very negatively. He was rude, would not even calmly listen to my version of events, constantly interrupted me, and behaved as if the customer was automatically guilty of everything. His main argument was only that he had “worked there for 13 years and handles dozens of such cars every day,” which was apparently supposed to end any discussion. When I tried to speak with other employees, he kept stepping in, shouting over me, and repeating that my money would not cover anything anyway, although that also seemed to be simply untrue. He was rude, arrogant, and completely incompetent.

I do not recommend this rental company to anyone. Do not be fooled by the fact that they do not require a credit card or a deposit, because in my opinion they make up for it later in other ways, at the expense of unsuspecting tourists. And if someone has already made the mistake of choosing this company, my advice is not to let yourself be intimidated by threats of police, court, and psychological pressure. In my view, the whole situation looked like an attempt to extract as much money as possible from a customer who found himself in a difficult situation

Absolutely no customer service…

Absolutely no customer service whatsoever. The staff was cold, rude, and completely unhelpful from start to finish. They provided zero information about practical matters such as parking payments, which is essential when renting a car in Iceland.

When returning the vehicle, I clearly proved that I had paid the parking fee they were claiming I hadn’t. Despite showing them the proof, they still charged me for the parking 880 ISK — plus an additional 3000 ISK “processing fee”!!! There was no attempt to assist or even listen. I was simply told that it was my responsibility to deal with it. The issue was caused by confusion in their own rental contract, yet I was the one penalized.

On top of that, the vehicle was extremely old and not the one I had reserved. It had 430,000 km on it, a defective window, and several other issues. Completely unacceptable.

Non-existent customer service, unfriendly staff, and vehicles in very poor condition.

As other customers have mentioned, we’re simply told where the vehicle is located in the parking lot. It’s up to us to find it on our own. We’re required to sign the rental agreement before even having the chance to inspect the vehicle. We’re told to take photos — great idea in complete darkness! However, when returning the car, they come out to inspect it.

Avoid at all costs.

Great experience

Great experience. No problem at pick up and during the rental despite rain and snow. Only issue is that their office is 7-10 mins away and sometimes don’t have the capacity to take all the passengers, so you need to go back to the airport after that. Great value for money though.
