Icerental 4x4 is an innovative car rental company specializing in 4x4 vehicles in Iceland. Founded in 2013, our family-owned business began with only 10 cars. Since then, Icerental 4x4 has grown a lot, with a big rental office near the Keflavik International Airport, where we offer a wide range of vehicles in all sizes and model years. Our passion is 4x4, and our fleet is based on quality 4x4 cars. However, we also provide vans and smaller vehicles to fulfill all your transportation needs while visiting Iceland. In 2014 we started with our Camper Jeep, offering Jeeps to camp in while exploring the highlands. This idea evolved into Roof Tent campers, and in 2017, we introduced our Roof Tent vehicles in various sizes. These are the perfect way to explore Iceland during the summertime—our 4x4 Roof Tent vehicles allow you to see the highlands and Iceland’s untouched nature. We at Icerental 4x4 are committed to offering the best quality 4x4 vehicles at reasonable rates. We believe in personal service based on building relationships with our customers.

The motorhome was perfect, as well as the support provided by RVIceland team!
I love the car, how the staf treat us so nice and polite. All very well explained. Thank you for the expirience.
It was a grate value for money. My car was upgraded eithoit asking for it.
The shuttle service from the airport was great, the driver told all kinds of thinks about the island during the drive to the office.
The rest of the personel was also very helpfull and friendly.
Maybe the only negitve was the "well used car" from stone chip damage at the front to dents and scratches at almost all panels. But technicaly the car was sound.
What was booked as a roughly 370 euro car rental ended up costing nearly 900 euros, through what I can only describe as a structured upselling operation. We picked up the car on 1 May 2026. The pickup itself was chaotic. A man was walking around with a small sign instead of there being a normal counter, and only the main driver was allowed to travel with him to the off site location where the cars are actually kept. My travel companion was left behind without any clear explanation of how long this would take or why.
Once at the off site location, a large display made the real terms clear. The standard deductible is 2500 euros and the standard insurance does not cover gravel damage, animal collisions, tires, windows, the undercarriage or the doors. In Iceland, where gravel roads and loose stones are the single most common cause of rental car damage, this means the basic insurance covers almost nothing that actually happens to tourists. For 325 euros extra the deductible drops to 750 euros, but gravel damage, tires and undercarriage are still excluded. The honest question is what is actually covered, and that question never really gets answered.
The worst part was how the credit card requirement was used as leverage. I was told I could not pay with my wife's credit card because I was registered as the main driver and the card therefore had to be in my name. The moment I agreed to the premium insurance of 400 euros, my wife's credit card was suddenly accepted without any further discussion. That is not an administrative rule, that is a sales technique. On top of all of this came a mandatory 150 euro road tax, with the clear message that no payment meant no car. None of these costs were communicated transparently in advance.
What makes the whole situation worse is the actual car they handed over after all these payments. A wreck with more than 170,000 kilometers on the odometer, paint damage and dents on every panel, cracks running through one of the doors, visibly bent chassis parts, loose pieces on the front bumper and a rear view camera so blurry that it was effectively unusable. Selling expensive insurance upgrades and then handing over a vehicle in this condition tells you everything you need to know about how this company operates.
My advice to anyone planning a trip to Iceland is to avoid Icerental4x4 and to choose a rental company that is upfront about the total cost and that offers insurance that actually covers the most common Icelandic risks. I felt pressured, poorly informed and ultimately taken advantage of at the very moment our holiday was supposed to begin.
I have rent Subaru outback for 8 days. Pass 2600 rm without any troubles.
Booking, email communication, friendly, accommodating to our needs, motorhome was in good clean condition.
Vehicle was a complimentary upgrade and was great. The airport shuttle pickup/dropoff was quick and pleasant. Rental staff were very efficient.
Really positive experience , friendly helpful staff and efficient service
Perfect experience, the staff was very fast and very helpful. Thank you so much
Very friendly and reliable, the shuttle service was great and super easy, overall very nice experience.
It was fantastic. We rented a big and comfy motorhome for 4 people and discovered the island.
⚠️ WARNING – Avoid this company ⚠️
I normally don’t post things like this, but after what happened last weekend, I feel like people need to know.
Me and a group of friends rented a vehicle from this company, and the entire experience turned into a nightmare. From the start, things felt off, but it got much worse when we returned the car. We were hit with huge charges (thousands of euros) with no clear explanation or justification.
What’s even more concerning is that several other customers were dealing with the exact same situation, all being asked to pay large amounts under pressure.
This is not normal business practice. It felt extremely dishonest and intimidating.
Also worth noting: their Instagram comments are closed, which says a lot in a situation like this.
Pickup and drop off process was quick and efficient. Front desk fully explained new tax and road hazard options.
You need to wait for the shuttle but it came within 15 mins. An older car but great value for money. We suffered a hairline crack on the windscreen due to a previous impact and they didn't charge us. Impressed
Great experience once we made it to the office and met a customer focused employee. When we arrived to the airport we were out of bagage claim a bit earlier then expected so I gave the shuttle service a call, the message was "I will be there in 15-20 min. just stay put" I replied "Ok, we are just next to the ATM as instructions in the mail" When we had waited more then 50 min. and not seen a person with the company logo I called back and was told "We are on the way, just wait" I then saw a person with the company logo on his Jacket and contacted him, but he was not there to get customers for cars, but for Motorhomes, but he was helpful to give the other shuttle driver a call. When the driver finally came he was hard (if not possible) to identify, but the other driver told us "Thats your driver". When I approached the driver with the fact we had been waiting for him, customer care was his last concern, he gave a very clear impression that we were just in his way and communication was not his focus. His body language was very clear to us (Leave me alone...) He did not give f... that we had been waiting in the airport for 1h with two small kids that had been up very early to start their travel to Iceland. Given his age I would not expect he knows what it means yet, what it is like traveling with kids, so maybe there is still hope for him.
When we then got to the office it was a new world, lots of understanding from the staff, very professional and true focus on getting us in our car and on our ways. So a very bad start was changed to a good start on our vacation. Guess the Shuttle driver needs to understand he is the first face most customers see from the company, a good start with be equip him with a jacket/cap with clear company logo, ensure he removes his sunglasses (especially when there is no sun) as they create a clear distance from the start.
Our drop off was also top quality, your guy in the office even gave us a call to ensure we did check if the road was open etc.
Overall, a very negative experience.
The only positive aspect was the shuttle service: punctual, efficient, and managed in a very professional way.
Unfortunately, everything else was disappointing. The front desk operator was extremely rude and impolite, showing no willingness to help and a complete lack of customer care. They also claimed that our booking had been made through an external provider, which resulted in unexpected extra charges for insurance and road tax.
Customer service was poorly handled from start to finish. To make matters worse, the car we were given was in unacceptable condition: full of rust and with multiple warning lights on the dashboard, clearly indicating poor maintenance.
A very negative experience overall. Absolutely not recommended.
