Iceland self guided tour

Instructions were simple and easy to follow. We were able to explore the places we wanted to, and the excursions were great. Contact an agent for information was simple and immediate.
Our hotels were as listed. Clean and friendly staff everywhere we stayed.
Car rental- could have been more clear that a shuttle would be taking us from the airport to the car rental, specifically that someone would have a sign for the rental company waiting in the airport atrium.
-Car rental was fine- warning to let people know to expect extra charge for car insurance. Pay for roadside assistance as we ended up with a flat tire. Tires on rental car were bare- little to no tread. Otherwise was very happy with Guide to Iceland and would highly recommend to anyone.

Our one-week self-drive tour of…

Our one-week self-drive tour of Iceland's west and south coasts and golden circle through Guide to Iceland in late May 2026 was amazing. The rental SUV was perfect for the highways and backroads. The check-in and check-out process of the rental car, hotels and tours were seamlessly arranged by Guide to Iceland. The two hotels in Reykjavik were multi-story and modern, while the other hotels were more like country inns on farms with sheep, horses and dogs. We chose the lowest rate hotels that had a private bathroom so they weren't 5-star but all were much better than I expected, and included a full Icelandic breakfast. Perhaps the best part of using Guide to Iceland for this trip was the in-car wifi and app that provided detailed verbal and onscreen maps and directions for our planned route including top attractions, our scheduled tours and hotels. Iceland does not have signs and billboards every 100 yards like the US, thank goodness, but some of the sights would be hard to find without the maps. Each day was planned to include main attractions along the route with plenty of extra time to explore spontaneously, and there are a lot of things to see. Keep your eyes open. One of the most beautiful and accessible glaciers we saw was not on the schedule. We just saw some cars parked off the road and people walking down a path and followed them. Guide to Iceland sends a downloadable/printable description of the main sights, which shouldn't be missed, but the beauty of the self drive is that you can decide what to see and do, and for how long. The local people are unbelievably friendly and helpful. Although the cloudy/rainy weather did not always cooperate with our trip, every day revealed a new landscape, a new experience. And with the help of Guide to Iceland it was pretty easy for a first-timer, and at a very reasonable price.

8 day self-drive tour in May 2026

I was planning a trip to Iceland, but had no idea where to start, how long to plan for, what to see or do. Guide to Iceland came along in my feed and I started to look at what they had to offer. I chose an 8-day self-drive tour around Iceland. I read somewhere that each day would be no more than 3 hours driving. I thought that was do-able. When I started to look at the details of the trip and mapped it in google, the "no more than 3 hours" was not every day. The first day was over 5 hours long and the last day was 6+ hrs, with the day before being 1 1/2 hours between hotel stays. I called to ask questions and was told I had to talk to my "dedicated travel agent" to make any changes to my itinerary. I didn't know I had a "dedicated travel agent," I thought Guide to Iceland was the travel agent. Anyway, got communicated about changes I wanted in the last 2 days to make the driving distance more even. By doing this, I was able to add 2 more tours to my itinerary. I found the two tours on Guide to Iceland and booked them. I then requested my itinerary be updated with the latest info before we left so I could print it out and take with me. They told me they would not do that because I booked the tours outside of the "dedicated travel agent." I told them I had no idea what they were talking about, I booked the additional tours from Guide to Iceland. They said they would have to speak to my "dedicated travel agent" and get back with me and it would take 24 hours. I never got communication back, so I called them. They did update my itinerary in the app, but did not send me an updated pdf. So I had to request that again 1 day before we would be leaving on our trip. Finally, got sent and I printed it out. This ended up being very useful because during the trip I had to make informed decisions on what we had time for and what we had to skip and it was nice to have the paper itinerary in front of me. We discovered when we got to Iceland, that Guide to Iceland did not update our car rental pickup time to match our airline info that I had sent them when we made the reservations. The rental agency was going to charge us for a late pickup, but backed off when I said it was Guide to Iceland that did not update the info they were given months ago. During the actual trip, Guide to Iceland were very helpful when answering questions and trying to help us out with GPS/direction issues. They were always professional and called me back when they said they would. I appreciated that. The biggest issues I had with Guide to Iceland were not having an even spread of driving in the first place, not updating our itinerary, and then not updating our car rental pickup/dropoff time. One other thing to add was the directions to various destinations in the app were incorrect and we did quite a bit of adjusting and driving to get back to where we were supposed to go, but I don't know if that was incorrect info in the app, or that google maps was wrong. But that was certainly an issue to have to work through on a trip that already had a lot of driving in it.

Just finished our trip around Iceland

Just finished our trip around Iceland. Booking with Guide to Iceland was great! Communication was easy when we needed to adjust or change times for an activity. Our hotels were wonderful. The driving times for the days were well balanced for the activities we had planned and left room for spontaneity as well. For us, what I would do differently when I return is plan for a full day in Reykjavik on either end of the trip we did. Overall, we loved and can’t wait to return. I would book with Guide to Iceland again.

The itinerary was thorough and easy to follow

The itinerary is easy to follow. The pre- and during communication is responsive and in a timely manner. There were a couple of hiccup once we arrived, e.g. We needed to call for self-check in information only when we arrived at the hotel in two occasions. Still, we will look forward to book trips with Guide to Iceland again.

Great and helpful.

It was really nice to have someone book all the hotels and excursions for us so that we didn't have to worry about any of those things. We did use the chat on the app a couple times with questions and changes and it worked great, the rep was very helpful and nice. It was also great to have all the places to see and things to do listed out to save us time of doing all that research ourselves.

Super helpful and quick with responses via email

They were so very helpful when we had some days revert to standard without us realizing as we were going back and forth on the website while booking this trip. We had to adjust a few things after booking and they made super easy to do.

The itinerary was a bit too packed for us personally, so we didn't make it to all the stops, but that just means we'll have to try and come back another time.

When we got caught in a one lane closed on ring road we emailed and let them know we were going to be a bit late for our booked time at a spa and they got ahold of the spa and got our time pushed back so we didn't miss it.

The only hiccup being the rental car company being the furthest one from the airport and so difficult to find when we first arrived. When dropping off in the rain I had to walk across several parking lots to get into the airport while watching other car rental companies having cars ferrying people to the airport door. This was pretty rough as I normally am an Avis preferred member, so having to use this company was odd for me.

Review

Everything went smoothly, exept the car rental, where we wrote that we need child seat but the info never made it to them. Luckily they gave it to us for free. And in the beginning when we arrived at the airport at night, we had a bit difficulty to find our car rental wich was outside of airport, had to use google maps to find it. But otherwise everything was good, loved the experince and everything else was great.

11 Wonderful Days!

Great trip. Group size was just right at 15, medium sized bus. The duration at 11 days allowed us enough time to see and do a lot without feeling rushed. Informative guide, who kept us on schedule, was flexible, and provided a lot of commentary about Iceland. Phone/online customer support was good, we sorted out a few issues with our vouchers.
