The service from Roxanne was excellent although I did witness station manager talking very rudely to her when it is obvious how busy she is and she was working alone I feel this was very unfair on Roxanne and unprofessional to speak to her like that in front of customers I would give Roxanne five stars for the service she provided under the circumstances of having to work alone.

WH Smith Paddington - Dreadful Experience

Yesterday, I arrived in Paddington station after a long journey and saw in the window of the store these adorable Paddington Bear key chain like charms for a Christmas tree or key ring looking items. I went pottering off into the store with intent to buy something lovely for my mum.

Then the most embarrassing and emotional horrific saga began. I walk in (bare in mind I'm wearing my panda jumper, 5ft tall 30 Yr old female). Hardly the budding criminal. Who jumps in front of me, the security man, aggressively questioning me. What do you want, why are you in here.... What I wanted was to look at your Paddington Bear items without the whole store turning to look at me like I'm a member of the sticky bandits from Home Alone. I was so embarrassed. Yes, I'm alternative in style, but I'm an equal to the rest of your PAYING customers. It was horrific and ruined my day. I've not felt this degraded in years. If I was about to take up thievery, it wouldn't be to steal from WH Smiths!

My friend outside the door practically came running in calling after me when she saw this security man towering over me, and me recoiling out of shock, embarrassment and genuine fear / horror. I told her I wanted to leave and scarpered quick.

This was awful. All your staff should treat everyone with respect, not harrass them from the second they get in the door. I've spent the rest of the my trip in fear that I'll get the same treatment elsewhere. All I wanted was a nice gift, not to be left feeling like there's something wrong with me.

Hi Diane, Sorry to hear about your recent visit to our Paddington store. We work extremely hard to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for both our customers and staff, and we pride ourselves on our service standards and we fully expect this to be incorporated into their daily performance in store.

With this in mind, it is very concerning to receive your feedback and I have passed this to the Store Leader so that they can take this up with their security team and the member of staff on shift that day.

Please accept our apologies as this is not the behaviour we except and it will be addressed accordingly.

Kind regards
Claire

I visited the store today to post a…

Known as TG Jones now, I visited the Milton Keynes store today to post a parcel using the DHL service. I was waiting in the queue when the shop assistant asked me to step aside to fill out a form and then return once it was complete. I did that within two minutes and, after making eye contact with him, went directly back, not intending to cut the queue or cause any issue.

At that moment, a man who appeared to be in his 60s was being served, so I waited patiently behind him. Without any reason, he started speaking to me rudely, saying I needed to queue on the other side. I explained that I had already been served and just needed to hand the parcel over quickly. Then another shop assistant spoke to me in an extremely rude manner, saying, “The rules aren’t different for you,” and told me to move to the other side. Her tone was so aggressive and unnecessary that it felt very personal and unprofessional.

I genuinely didn’t mean to skip the queue — I only wanted to complete the drop-off after following their earlier instructions. The staff at TG Jones were shockingly rude and unprofessional.

Hopeless

I was going to buy some stuff for my three hour journey. If I bought drinks what would I drink them out of? I was told the bottle or the can. Not my style so I didn't buy anything. When I've drinks from other outlets a plastic glass has been provided. I would have been happy to pay for something to drink out of but the attitude of the WH Smith staff was dismissive. I remember when they were an outstanding company. Not any more by a long way.

Be a little kinder....

Specific store experience, cannot comment on W H Smith in general. I found a telephone in a store at Dublin Airport. I said to a staff member, oh hey, I just found someones telephone. So he just snatched it off me without saying a word, threw it behind the counter and then just walked away. Despite being unbelievably rude. Just imagine that moment for someone for one second. It had bank cards in it, photos of children on the screensaver. Imagine getting to the gate for a family holiday you had looked forward to for ages and then finding your phone and bank cards missing? For goodness sake. Have the bare minimum of humanity. Surely you could have asked the airport police to put a message out on the tannoy? Appalling behavior.
Regarding the response below. That is absurd. The correct response to someone handing a staff member an item of lost property is NOT to snatch the item and throw it on a shelf behind the counter without even acknowledging the person handing it to you. If you have been placed in a position where you inform the general public via a review response that correct protocol for WHSmith staff is to be exceptionally rude to customers, then may I suggest that you both need better training.

Hi Vivienne, I'm sorry you are disappointed with the way the lost phone was handled at our Dublin Airport store. I do appreciate this would be so upsetting for the customer who had lost this, but regret the store have a process to follow with any lost property and this would have been followed. Check expiry dates

If there was a choice of no stars, i would happily accepted that. I paid £4.49! For a sandwich which was 5 days OUT OF DATE. I would not recommend this place as staff members were also rude, had to ask for assistants after being blatantly ignored. Will not be returning

Awful

I have just been into the Eastbourne store to purchase a £250 gift card.
The assistant said that it couldn’t be purchased as it wasn’t allowed.
As I went to walk out I overheard the assistant say is she a scammer.
I then phoned the store to complain & when someone did answer they hung up on me.
On the 5th time of ringing I was told that there was nobody in charge & the person who I tried to make a complaint to was listening but I felt she didn’t care.
She then said there was no number & that the email probably wouldn’t work either.
I refuse to go back into this store.

Rude sales assistant

I wanted to buy an adaptor for my iPhone in the shop within Terminal 2 of Manchester airport at 15:20 on 14/9/25 but they were locked into the display. I hadn’t experienced this before so asked the female assistant if I was supposed to be able to get the item myself or not. She said, “You ask me to get it for you but usually people say hello first” in a very haughty way. So I didn’t bother buying it there!

Elder Street St Andrews Square, Coach Station, Edinburgh EH1 3DX

Hello, I rarely complain about customer service. I have had experience in hospitality, and can forgive anyone for having an off day. My following review is almost exactly the same as the one I have left on Google Reviews.

Most of the staff who have served me in this WHSmith store have been very pleasant and helpful. There is one member of staff, however, who very much needs some customer service training. I do not have a name, but estimate this woman to be in her forties, and tonight she was on shift at five in the evening. She has been rude to me on repeated occasions. The first time, she told me off for going to her checkout rather than the self service. She was at her till, and there was no reason I was able to see, that she was unable to serve me. I had not pulled her away from stacking shelves, but she appeared to resent having to serve me, and her manner was curt, and gave me the impression of hostility. My second experience with her was earlier this evening, just before I went to go and catch my coach. I was purchasing a coffee which required confirmation of age, and she appeared to resent being asked to perform this service on the screen at the self checkout. Her manner was, again, extremely rude and she once again appeared resentful of having to do her job.

I am a frequent traveller who regularly uses the bus station this WHSmith is located at. This woman has made me feel uncomfortable about making any purchases from this branch of WHSmith.

Disappointing customer service

I am so incredibly disappointed! I placed a pre-order back at the start of July for two items, one being a book set and one being a standalone. I got my confirmation email and payment was taken, everything was great and then mid august received a refund for my whole order. I emailed customer service to clear everything up and the response i got was “We take payment at point of purchase as a pre authorisation for the payment method” but if this was the case why would it them be refunded almost a month later ? I thought nothing of it and trusted that this was the case, and that i would be charged again before the items were shipped. I woke up this morning to an email saying that part of my order was cancelled as payment could not be made, i checked my bank to find out where the issue was, to find that no attempt was made to take the payment, so emailed again to try and resolve this only to be told that i will just have to re order on the website. This wouldn’t have been an issue however back when i made the order i had a discount which meant that i saved £12 and had free delivery, which doesnt seem much however this all is a huge inconvenience. I then received another email stating that my whole order had been cancelled! The whole ordeal is exhausting and unfortunately i won’t be shopping here online again! It’s disappointing because as WHSmith everything was great, no previous issues, however i ordered after the change of ownership and so TGJones is somewhere i will not be wasting my time or money (if they’d even bother to take it!)
