Very difficult to cancel—not recommended for elderly relatives

TalkTalk’s service is shockingly poor, and I want to warn others—especially the elderly and their families—about what to expect. My mother turned 89 on 14 August, and her experience with TalkTalk has been a nightmare. Her phone and broadband were completely out of contract, meaning this should have been a simple, straightforward cancellation. Instead, it took one physical recorded delivery letter and three emails—including one directly to the CEO—just to get them to action it. I originally cancelled by email on 30 June after her phone line went down for the third time. The service was simply too unreliable. When the line failed, my 89-year-old mother was left with no landline for 3 days. Luckily she had me to fight her corner, but what about those elderly people who have no one? Trying to speak to a human being at TalkTalk is a joke. On one occasion, the automated system informed me I was 33rd in the queue. Of course, I could not sit on hold waiting for that, as it is completely unacceptable. They tried to hit her with an unfair billing balance of £54.03 because of their own delay in processing the June cancellation. It was only after I escalated the complaint directly to the CEO's office that they finally agreed to waive the balance and close the account. If you have vulnerable or elderly parents, stay away from TalkTalk. They make leaving unnecessarily difficult, and their customer service queues are appalling.

If I could give TalkTalk a rating of…

If I could give TalkTalk a rating of zero, I would. I have been a TalkTalk customer for approximately 10 years, but this year has been by far the worst experience I have ever had with the company.

My broadband connection was not working for eight consecutive days. Despite contacting customer service, no effective action was taken to resolve the issue within a reasonable timeframe. Nevertheless, TalkTalk continued to take the full monthly payment from my account, despite me not receiving the service I was paying for.

Although the connection was eventually restored after eight days, the quality of the service remains extremely poor and unreliable. I have explained that I no longer wish to continue with the contract due to the unacceptable level of service. However, I was told that I would have to pay a £60 cancellation fee.

I find this extremely disappointing, particularly after being a loyal customer for around 10 years. Given the length of the service interruption and the poor quality of the connection since it was restored, I do not believe it is reasonable to expect me to pay a cancellation fee.

I will remain with TalkTalk for the remaining six months of my contract, but once the contract ends, I will be moving to another broadband provider that can provide a more reliable and professional service.

My internet suddenly went so slow a lot…

ExMy internet suddenly went so slow a lot of things dont work. After about an hour on the phone, they blamed the amount of devices on it and tried to up-sell me. When I asked why suddenly overnight too many devices were too many, they returned to the script and tried to up-sell again. I am now switching to another company.

UPDATE: It was indeed an issue with the line and I now have all devices runnjng perfectly again. I am still switching as the AI customer support is not very neurodivergent friendly so I am better off with the company that sells itself on having humans to speak to.

Plan renewal

Sometimes need to persevere to achieve your requirements. Not helped by Talktalk using poor phone lines to converse with staff who very often speak quickly & English is not their first language (not their fault) but I always ask then to speak slower. Usually a cheaper price deal on phone than prices offered online.

We appreciate how upsetting and frustrating it must have been to deal with repeated calls, conflicting information and concerns around the account, especially given her age and vulnerabilities. This is clearly not the experience we want any customer, or their family, to have.

Absolute Shambles of a Company

TalkTalk must be the only company on the planet that employs customer service agents with seemingly no knowledge of its products and processes. I have been with them for over 25 years and the service has been shoddy-ish, but I stayed as I thought perhaps that was just what providers were like generally, but the way I have been treated over my recent upgrade after several years paying over the odds as out of contract has been dismal. After countless hours on calls and webchats with these people over the past week or two, here are some examples:
1. Rude, nasty agents who yell at you for being "agressive" if you ask questions.
2. At least three different agents on every call once (and if) you get past the chatbot, none of whom can help with a problem which by their own admission is at their end.
3. Twice signing me up for contracts which it turned out a week later they couldn't provide as our rural connection isn't good enough (which I explain repeatedly, but listening isn't their strong point) and then failing to inform me the orders had been cancelled.
4. Three to four calls a day from an automated voice saying they need to speak to me and will be calling again, but when I call back to query they say there have been no calls and they don't need to at all.
5. Using a script with no deviation and therefore being unable to assist with the unique challenges that a rural connection brings, and becoming frustrated with me for asking for clarification.
6. Repeatedly claiming I had arranged for another provider to take over my connection and I needed to cancel that before proceeding with renewing with them (no, I hadn't).
7. An insistence on using industry-specific technical jargon which means nothing to a layman and refusing to explain it (eg "There is an unsolicited cease on your account and you need to cancel it" - I would if I knew what that was - turns out there wasn't one anyway).
8. Different agents providing different and conflicting information in the same webchat, then one accusing me of lying for pointing this out, even though I provided cut& paste evidence.
9. Calls to and webchats with customer service lasting a minimum of 90 minutes every time, with zero progress made and leaving me none the wiser.
10. Since informing them I want to leave, and securing/confirming a disconnection date, I am being harrassed daily with multiple calls, texts and letters asking which package I want to upgrade to.

This list could go on, but I've had enough and I'm sure you have too, if you've read this far. Skipping to the end - I've changed providers and the service with my new one has been exemplary. Be kind to yourself. Don't go these criminals.

WE had no issue with the broadband service, but omg when I needed to move house..... 45 mins that I will never get back. They ignored some things during the chat, so they kept on pushing for 24 months loyalty, and also at the very end suddenly someone need to be at the property over 18 for the device. Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. It's great to hear that the broadband service itself met your expectations, although it's disappointing that the home move process did not.

Depending on the services available at a new address, an engineer appointment may be required to complete the installation, and in those cases someone aged 18 or over does need to be present. We appreciate that this information would have been more helpful if it had been made clear earlier in the conversation.

Your comments regarding the length of the discussion and the overall moving experience have been noted. We appreciate your feedback and wish you all the best with your new provider.

Extremely poor service – 8 years as a customer ended by total incompetence and breach of contract.

I have been a customer with TalkTalk for 8 years, but their recent customer service and business practices are a absolute disgrace.
They completely failed to honor our agreement: after agreeing on a new contract for £12/month, they failed to carry out the installation as scheduled and then randomly generated a bill for £27. Charging customers arbitrary amounts for services they never even provided is completely unacceptable.
Getting in touch with their customer service is a nightmare. Agents do not listen to what the client is saying, completely ignore customer needs, and blindly copy-paste standard scripts instead of solving real issues. It took endless back-and-forth and mentioning formal complaints to Ofcom just to get them to escalate their own mistake to the Complaints Management Team.
After 8 years of loyalty, I am completely disgusted by the lack of competence, broken promises, and terrible communication. I strongly advise everyone to stay away from TalkTalk.
