Simple Practice has made lots of improvements lately but gosh do they feel expensive. The platform isn’t bad though.

A Total Game-Changer

Simple Practice has been a game-changer for my practice. First, it is very intuitive and user-friendly. Second, so many daily tasks, such as processing payments and generating super-bills, are automated. This saves me many hours per week. Finally, the customer service is very helpful and responsive. I HIGHLY recommend Simple Practice to any health provider.

There are better options! Leave your bad relationship.

I've used SimplePractice independently since I started my private practice in 2021, and in group practice before that. They have progressively gone downhill. There was the uproar around their privacy policies in 2023. There was the nickle-and-diming of features like calendar sync. Then they added an annual per clinican CPT code charge. The most recent enshittification involves yet another price increase, which they have attempting to sell as beneficial to customers. I found it unclear when my price would increase, and when I reached out in frustration, SP support blamed me for not understanding and for not paying close enough attention. All of this feels like toxic big tech at its worst. I'm finally jumping ship, and I encourage others who have been on the fence to do the same.

NOT made for prescribing providers

I do not recommend this system to prescribers. It can take up to 8 weeks before they have you approved for prescribing. The invoicing is extremely difficult. The insurance verification is incorrect. It is good for keeping chart notes but that is it.

Simple Practice has made my practice succeed

Simple Practice has made managing my private practice much more streamlined. Having an easy-to-use EHR, billing, scheduling and accounting system can really take a lot of the stress out of running a business. The support I get from Simple Practice is thorough, quick and very helpful.

Game Changer

I switched to SimplePractice about a year ago. It took some time for me to set my forms up. I still have just a little more tweaking to do on my forms. Even with all that, I'm glad I made the switch.
It has made my intake and note-taking so much easier. I am a one-woman show, and SimplePractice has been a game changer for me and my practice!

SimplePractice used to be a great EHR…

SimplePractice used to be a great EHR that I happily recommended to fellow clinicians and felt was well worth my money. They no longer value their customers and are constantly chasing the next shiny object to add to their list of features--which they eventually will bundle into a new pricing structure and force you to pay for even if you don't use it (I've now been through multiple, frustrating rounds of this and expect it to keep getting worse).

Further, it isn't "simple" anymore, it's bloated with extras that aren't particularly functional and they've let core features (like online booking) atrophy without keeping up with the competition. I found that when I added clinicians to my practice it was a much clunkier experience, it really wasn't built with group practices in mind, but you have to pay the highest tier price for it anyway. Their processing fees are the highest out there, which is important to calculate when you're looking at bang for your buck. It may not seem significant, but it really adds up over time.

I'm looking forward to taking my business elsewhere.

Almost Too Simple

I have been using Simple Practice since 2018. It seems cliche to say that this platform makes running my practice simple, but in this case that really is the best word. I think for me there are 3 things that make running my solo private practice almost too easy.

1. Scheduling. I love that I can schedule clients for weeks at a time. I can properly schedule clients who are every other week and weekly and be able to add in one-time sessions in between and minimize the problem of double booking myself. Clients can cancel themselves and I can also see who would be in person or virtual. I love that I can create any time of appointment so that I don’t schedule clients without leaving time for eating. The scheduling includes the billing codes, alerts before each session and much more so it’s not something easily recreated in google calendar. And now that other calendars and Simple Practice can sync, it makes my weekly schedule that much more simple.

2. Billing. There was lots of intimidation around bilingual insurance. Enter Simple Practice. I still cannot believe that I can submit billing for multiple clients at once with one click. That’s it. And if I ever have an issue (very rare) the customer support is so good, they give step by step instructions to fix the issue making email communications simple as well.

3. Telehealth. My clients love that they can join a session from their iPad, laptop or phone with the click of a button. This is great for adolescent clients and allows for using a backup device in the moment if a laptop or phone dies mid session. They can send a message while on session in the chat or I can share my screen to work on exercises when needed. It has been super simple to have family sessions on multiple devices when needed.

Running a practice from intake to termination is so easy that sometimes I feel like I’m forgetting to do something. It’s almost too simple. But guess what, Simple Practice even alerts you when you forget to do a note or a client has an outstanding balance, so even forgetting is made simple too!

Initial set up was easy. But the rest, no great.

Initial set up was easy.
However, poor customer service--I get the same answer from all of them, addresses for insurance were wrong costing me $/rejected claims, you are virtually left trying to figure out billing and their answer to not communicating with insurances--you get to manually add payments in your free time. The EMR is very basic, no area for vital signs etc.
100$ a month so I can teach myself billing, claims and scheduling. Fun times-not!

Satisfied Newby

I am one year into my practice. I’ve used some competitors. SP is by far the easiest to set up. Good website, easy to set up billing. Virtual Therapy is excellent.
Customer service questions were answered quickly.

Simple Practice froze my account and wont tell me why!

I finally became licensed on Friday 1/3/25 and opened my own simple practice account. I spent the whole weekend (72 hours+) setting it up which was an absolute nightmare because I had to manually transfer each and every one of my clients (with all thier information) to my new account from my advisor's old account. I also had to send intake forms to each of my clients on at a time because there is no option to do a mass email. Yesterday evening I went to thier online form and wrote a complaint about this issue (along with hundreds of other practitioners over the past 4 years)

Then today (monday), on my first day of business, I get a strange message from Simple Practice stating "
Several client text messages you sent weren’t delivered, and your SimplePractice account is locked due to security concerns. If you think this is a mistake, you can contact the Customer Success team for help accessing your account. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause your practice.

Thank you,
- The SimplePractice team"

I'm wondering.... "what the heck? I don't even know how to use the chat option!" Then I became concerned, was my account compromised?

So I try to contact them and realize....There was no email address, no phone number provided, and because I was locked out of my own account I could not use the chat option. After a bunch of research I try calling a customer service number three different times and was on hold for 15-45 mins. Each time the phone eventually went silent and then disconnected.

I try to email customer service. Hours go by, no response.

I finally was able to log into my supervisors account and use the chat. I explain the critical nature of the issue, that I am newly licensed and today is my first day of independent practice with my own client base. The agent kept trying to push me off to a specialist who would "be in contact with me by email" but refused to provide answers on what happened. I conceded and concluded the chat, but no email ever came through.

I hopped back on the chat to verify, agent would only give me a case number but no additional information.

I called customer service using my husband's phone and, surprise! An agent picks up, asks my information which, I provide... she puts me on hold and 2 mins later comes back on the line and tells me that there is nothing she can do for me and "we take account issues like these very seriously" so I would have to "wait until a specialist was able to review my case and could reach back out."

Upon confirming this with her, I then asked who I could speak to about the issue of how difficult it was to get in touch with customer service to begin with, how it had been 4-5 hours before I was even able to get in touch with someone and that was only because I was able to use another account to contact them via chat."

The woman refused to help me, told me there was nothing she could do and just kept repeating this over and over again. She tried to hang up on me and I asked her if she could please just tell me how long I would have to wait for a "specialist" to be in touch. Her response was just "no" then she hung up.

WHAT THE HECK??

Worse than a poor experience

I've used three EMR systems and Simple Practice is the worst. It is nearly impossible to speak to a person even after you've written them many times. As someone with a neurological disability covered by the ADA, and as a 30 year clinician, I was disgusted by their lack of support. It was a painful experience working with them because many of those who were supposed to help did not know their product/ system well enough to answer questions. And they charged me for three months after I cancelled. Because no one would pick up the phone I emailed the CEO on LinkedIn.

SimplePractice is amazing, secure, and intuitive

SimplePractice is a really collaborative electronic health record system. I have actually visited the Santa Monica, CA headquarters multiple times: prior to 2020 and then in the newer location quite recently. It has been amazing to meet people in person that work there. I appreciate being able to utilize the built-in marketing features to receive in-network referrals. SimplePractice has an internal feedback forum that I have found to be helpful in relaying feedback to SimplePractice engineers directly about current and potential features. I do appreciate the speed of SimplePractice and the customization that allows for my own forms to be used.

I was really disappointing in competitor products that had fixed forms that could not be customized, or weren't as intuitive. I've also found insurance billing to be so simple, as I can be in network and not be forced to use some haphazard system that isn't user-friendly.

Over the years, the features have improved and made things more simple but robust too. As a clinician who uses scheduling features, insurance features, telehealth, and marketing, I see this platform as one that I can collaborate with. They recently launched measurement-based care, which is excellent for insurance needs. The platform keeps growing and I have been pleased in the recent advancements in being able to connect to support staff and personalized assistance with specific claims when I've been confused as to how to navigate a certain report (only has happened a few times).

I look forward to continuing to use and benefit from SimplePractice, and look forward to the refinement of existing features and introduction of newer ones too. The platform is HIPAA-compliant and takes security seriously. When I've asked them about features, security has always been clearly a top priority rather than an assumed piece of the puzzle, which is nice to experience.

Great company, one thing though

Great company, great support! I would like to make a suggestion, Simple Practice google calendar appointments are not showing up on my personal google calendar even though it's synced. Maintaining two calendars is not doable, especially when trying to use a book now feature on the website. Please take a lesson from Apptoto, all calendars are seamlessly connected.

Prescribers, use something else

The customer service has been fine, but insufficient since getting up and going has been horrendous so far. Especially since there is no phone number to talk to an actual person. It may work for therapists, but if you are a prescriber, use something else. Or give yourself a month to get set up. It's irritating the weeks of set up have been on my dime, since I still can't fully use the program and still haven't gotten paid. I'll be eating all my set up money and switching to something else.

Terrible Customer Service - Errors in System

I have experienced increasing glitches in my use of Simple Practice - being taken to error pages and the odd summary of notes or activity pages that do not allow for further navigation.

Customer Service is through bots, chat or email requests. The errors in the software I have reported were not resolved by any of these. There is only 'our technical team is working on it' and more waiting. It is really too bad that this company does not invest in customer support. I cannot recommend this practice software as a result.

Increasingly expensive and sometimes a PITA

I've used SP for 5 years, and some aspects of it are great. However, the insurance billing is often difficult, and in particular, I have struggled with one insurance issue for a year without getting a result. Notably, their help center is literally impossible to reach directly; you have to submit requests through their website. There's no way to email or call. It's deeply frustrating and increasingly expensive. If it weren't for the insurance issues or the inaccessibility of the help center, I wouldn't be considering leaving. However, as time goes on, that is increasingly appealing. If my practice wasn't inextricably tied into their platform and EHR, I would have done so already. As it is, I have shifted a lot of my billing off of SP in an effort to streamline it.

Price keeps always increasing

Keeps you organized and it's easy to use BUT the huge disappointment is that the monthly fee keeps increasing exponentially the more bookings you make, the more you use their system. I started paying the basic price, 2 years later I'm paying twice as much. Strange business model where they punish you for staying longer with them (?).

Hi Rossana - I can definitely clarify that we do not charge per booking or per client. We only have 3 subscription plans and we have not raised our prices in over 2 years. Our 3 plans are designed to grow with your practice. We have a Starter plan, Essential plan, and Plus plan which all have different features and account capabilities.
