Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 335 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Customers frequently complain about unhelpful customer service representatives who are difficult to reach, dismissive, and entirely unaccommodating when handling urgent inquiries. Many people also face highly frustrating issues regarding unexpected account restrictions, delayed international payments, and extremely long waiting times on customer support phone lines. Some reviewers were happy with individual staff members, describing specific branch advisors as exceptionally polite, professional, and very helpful during branch visits. These pleasant employees successfully managed to provide clear guidance, patiently explaining complex processes and assisting clients smoothly through their banking transactions.

Rude Staff, if you can actually find one to talk to

Called the Esterhazy branch by mistake today, got a wrong number and the lady said, "This is a Royal Bank phone!" I started to ask her if I could just check to see which number I'd called and she hung up on me. Tried to call the actual branch to talk to an actual person and spent about a half hour doing so, it's COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET PUT THROUGH TO A HUMAN BEING. Terrible terrible customer service. I've been planning on switching banks and absolutely will not be switching to RBC if this is how they treat people. Which it is! Because it just happened. YUCK

RBC isn’t there for the clients

RBC isn’t there for the clients. They are there for their deep pockets. If you want to transfer money from one account to another using the mobile app you have to do it between 7am and 6pm. Outside these hours RBC has to approve it. Even if it is your account ya and that they are linked togheter. This is done so they can charge you NSF fees and more. You can ask them for a $500 over draft, and they will tell you that you have to apply for a much larger amount. And they only approve the ones that have credit reports that are high and perfect. They don’t care about what happens to you as long as they make money off of you. Same thing with TD bank and even worst with Scotia bank. None of these tree bank tycoons can be trusted with your money as they are like mafias, all about the money that goes in their pockets.

RBC and BMO fraud tesourced

I was on the phone with an RBC fraud representative from 9::15pm on the 12th of June until 5:15am on the 13th.
There was a massive attack on my RBC and BMO accounts and I got zero explanation of what had happened and how this was to be rectified. I lost my Client Card use. I lost my access to online banking at the Royal. Further, I was informed my Client Card would be usable in the morning.
No such luck.
The real travesty is what happened in my business account. An untold number of transfers were made from two of my BMO business accounts which had to be reversed one at a time.
The reason I have no final count is simply because it is 9am on the 13th and am getting ready to join our continuing call in an effort to rectify this situation.
It appears to me that both RBC and especially BMO have had a serious hack and have no clue what is going on.
Over this weekend both BMO and RBC share fraud resources, obviously the banks don't make enough money to afford their own.
Will keep you posted as I have no choice but to be an active participant, if not the Banks will not stand behind their negligence and not refund these obviously fraudulent activities.

Rbc and RBC Direct invest

I have been trying to transfer My registered account from RBC to RBC Direct invest and it took so much effort and back and forth I realized how slow and archaic these people's systems are. Luckily there is wealth simple and I happily transfered out 35k out of rbc right away with no issues.

RBC loan payment setup is not user-friendly

I recently took out an RBC loan and had a very frustrating experience trying to set up a simple payment.

I initially tried to add the RBC loan as a payee from my other bank, but couldn’t find it listed. I called RBC for help and was placed on hold for a long time while the representative tried to find an answer. I was then told that RBC loans cannot be added as a payee from another bank, but I could make payments online instead.

However, after more time on hold and further explanation, I was informed that even online payments are not straightforward. I was told I needed to add debit information, but the system only accepts RBC debit accounts. Eventually, I was advised that I would need to visit a branch in person with a void cheque so they can set it up.
For something as basic as making a loan payment, this process felt unnecessarily complicated and not user-friendly. As someone who normally manages everything online or by phone, I was surprised that a branch visit was required just to set up payments.
Overall, this was not a good first experience with RBC, and it makes me hesitant to use their services again

RBC British Airways Visa: A Caution for Existing RBC Customers

I’m sharing this experience as a caution to anyone considering the RBC 'British Airways' Visa card, particularly existing RBC customers who may assume that the advertised welcome offer applies to them.

We applied after seeing an online advertisement promoting a welcome bonus of 60,000 Avios points for meeting specified spending thresholds. Relying on that offer, we switched from our previous RBC credit card and fulfilled the required spending criteria within the stated time frame.

About eight months later, after following up on the missing points, we were told that we were not eligible for the bonus because we were already RBC customers when we switched cards. That critical limitation was not clearly disclosed in the extensive advertising materials and appeared only in the fine print.

From a customer’s perspective, this is difficult to view as anything other than misleading. The primary reason we chose the card was effectively unavailable to us, despite our meeting the advertised requirements. Had this restriction been presented clearly and prominently in the extensive advertising materials, we would not have made the switch.

For that reason, I would strongly encourage others—especially current RBC clients—to examine all eligibility conditions carefully before applying. In our case, what appeared to be a valuable offer was ultimately undermined by inadequate disclosure.

This experience has significantly undermined our trust in RBC’s credit card marketing practices, which is particularly disappointing given our long-standing relationship as loyal RBC customers.

Very good to deal with aside getting ahold of fraud department

I really like RBC. They understand times are tough and deposited a one time $100 for free. I’ve never seen a review on other banks doing the same. I like that you can speak to customer service through the app. I would have put 5 stars but I’ve been unable to log into my account for well over 2 weeks now, the general support line tried to help and said to reach out to the fraud service if I can’t log into or go into the branch. I live over an hour from my home branch so i am unable to make time to go, ive been trying to reach the fraud line and i have not been able to get through.

Try to get verified to get info on your credit card

Try to get info on your credit card, cancel one, anything the AI is horrible. If you ever get an 'advisor" they often can't "verify" you because they ask stupid, and irrelevant questions....like what is your "issue number?" clue: there IS NO issue # for a credit card! Then you have to go to a branch to resolve the issue. CASH IS KING!!

Absolutely the worst customer service in the world

Royal Bank of Canada needs auditing, their customer service is the worst I have ever experienced. Takes hours to get through to anyone and then they cant see my accounts, was then given a totally non-existent email address to send my complaint to, my email bounced back immediately. Did an international transfer and was charged fees even though my account clearly states that RBC do not charge fees, tried to get the fees refunded and no response from RBC. Needless to say that I have closed all my account with this pathetic excuse of a bank. DO NOT BANK WITH RBC!

Many issues

Many issues, couldn't sign into my banking as they changed the process, didn't inform me, couldn't get past the bot for several attempts. spoke to an agent, she was helpful, and clarified the changes. Want to apply for a new credit card, but can't get past hold to discuss some of the details. I am now into this for about 3 hours..I have been with RBC for almost 60 years, the service is terrible now. Time to explore different banks.

The worst

The worst. Incompetence beyond belief. Months of people not doing their jobs, even once accounts were closed, cards shredded, they charged annual fees, resulting in credit score lowering by a lot! When we finally realized and called several people promised the charge was reversed and credit restored. Months later, new charges still and credit still damaged. These are absolute fools. No one at this bank does anything or cares. Absolute trash, doesn't deserve to be a bank. NO TRUST.
Not to mention the initial reason for leaving was because of years of broken contracts, lies, and incompetence regarding professional line of credit in the first place. Garbage.

Incredibly difficult to transfer money

Incredibly difficult to transfer money. It seems there are daily limits which change at random. Some days I can transfer 1000 CAD, others 2000, others not even 100. Missed rent payments because of this. The bank says its for my security :/

Terrible customer service

Terrible customer service, extremely unnecessary convoluted automated system, designed to make to go away in frustration because they are too cheap to Hire real people, yet charge unexplained exorbitant fees at their ATM. They do not care about people only $. Time to contact a class action lawyer, they are doing everything they can to avoid their customers. What a disgrace!
