Before onboarding with Quirky Campers I struggled to find any reviews from owners, so I’m sharing my experience after just over a year with them.
The first red flag came when I phoned for advice about managing the additional income and was told not to worry about tax “unless a brown letter comes through the door”. That attitude set the tone.
Here are some of the experiences I've made with them:
❌ Insurance and customer vetting
Quirky pre-approved a customer even though their licence didn’t meet my insurance terms. The booking had blocked out my van during peak season. When the booking had to be cancelled, I was told to refund the customer in full (even though it was Quirky’s mistake) and if I didn't, then the customer wouldn't receive any money back. After the customer threatened legal action, they refunded him and paid me only £200 of an £800 booking.
❌ Discount codes applied without consent
A customer booked using a 20% “Happy Easter” discount I knew nothing about. Apparently new owners are automatically opted into Quirky’s campaigns and “shouldn’t” turn them off. If Quirky want to offer discounts, they should cover the cost – not owners.
❌ Sharing personal information
Quirky gave my phone number to a stranger who “wanted more info” on my van. This is exactly why I use a platform rather than taking private bookings. The caller wasn’t even eligible under my insurance.
❌ Pressure to reduce prices
I received repeated calls asking me to rent the van at a lower nightly rate than advertised – often last-minute.
❌ Insurance process left to owners
Beyond recommending a provider, Quirky don’t help. The owner has to handle licence checks, proof of address, and back-and-forth with customers – creating delays and frustration.
❌ Poor booking system
- The backend portal is difficult to use and comes with four hours of training videos. As someone who designs digital interfaces for a living – any system requiring that much instruction has a serious usability problem.
- The interface is frustrating to use on mobile, often unusable.
- Booking notifications come from the customer’s personal email, not a Quirky address – so they often land in spam.
- Messages I sent to customers via the portal often never reached them, even after they checked their spam folders.
- I can see full personal details of people who abandon a booking. Why do I need that information – and how is that not a data privacy issue?
- When customers request to book multiple vans, I can see the full details of their enquiry with other owners, including pricing and private messages.
❌ Delayed payments
Payments are only made every other Thursday after the van is returned. If your van is out for 10 days and returns on a Friday, you could wait up to 24 days before being paid.
Final thoughts
Every positive review / experience on the platform is solely down to the owners doing their best. Quirky collects a nice looking selection of hand-built campers, but that’s where the value ends. The process is riddled with flaws and there’s a persistent lack of professionalism.
We had an epic European road trip in Billy, visiting 9 different countries and saw some amazing scenery!
Billy has ever you need and could want ! And his owners are brilliant and so friendly and helpful ! Totally recommend and would definitely use again 😃
Fantastic to deal with lovely motorhome. It’s my second time using Quirky Campers and would recommend them
Booked a van then booked my fligjts....to find out that there is no van and no replacement. Said they would call back and didn't. Had to callagain to get a straight ansxer. So beware! If you think your dream holiday is just round the corner, well ... it may not be!
It was our first time in a Campervan and it won’t be our last,! We thoroughly enjoyed it and Inigo isa lovely, comfortable van, we couldn’t fault it. Looking forward to going away in it again. The owner was helpful and they had thought of everything that you may need for your trip.
Great experience - really helpful videos of all the things you need to know about, in advance of the trip. Pick up and return quick and easy, with another run through on pick up of essential information.
All in all would highly recommend.
We recently hired a campervan called Bumble through Quirky Campers. The campervan is based in Warrington, hosted by Rich & Nici.
Bumble is just perfect - no need to look any further. This was our first time holidaying in a campervan. Bumble has all you need and then some more; the owner Rich has thought of absolutely everything. All you need to do is relax and enjoy and oh boy did we. We had the best time, I wish Bumble was mine!
We will definitely holiday in Bumble again and would recommend her to anyone looking for the perfect campervan. Nice to drive, passenger seats are comfortable and the bed is so cozy. Like I said, Bumble is just perfect with ALL the creature comforts. Added to all that the owner, Rich is the perfect gentleman, he explained everything to us and put us at ease immediately, an all round nice guy.
Such a huge range of campers to rent and so easy to complete.
We rented Everest.
We had the best time! Charlotte and Michael the owners are the most helpful and approachable people.
Everest is just awesome, amazingly kitted out and very easy to manage.
We used it for our wedding transport and to then stay in after the wedding, followed by a little few days get away. Far cheaper than hiring a car for a couple of hours for the wedding and then going on holiday.
I can't recommend hiring Everest enough, we will certainly be doing it again.
We hired Forrest for the week and visited all over Northumberland. Van was terrific, worked perfectly and. Lots of fun. Laura and Marrick were very friendly and while process easy. Highly recommended.
We had a brilliant fortnight travelling in Bean on the Isle of Skye and Mull. Gavin was very responsive if we had a query. Bean is very stylish and had everything we needed for a fun and successful trip. We were first timers for van driving and would thoroughly recommend Bean for your own free style adventure!
We had a wonderful time at a music festival with Hepzibah! The van is very easy to drive and there is a reversing camera which is very helpful. The van layout is the best one we’ve been in, with a permanant bed which is extremely comfortable; we got a good 8 hours of
sleep every night! The van has all the things you would need, and the toilet and drinking water are easy to manage. We loved the way that the space had been used to maximum efficiency to store our stuff and when using hook up, and the heater was extremely efficient for the chilly evenings.
This van feels like you have all the benefits of a bigger motorhome, and all the ease of a smaller one. We loved our time in Hepzibah and hope we get to have another holiday in her. We were sad when it was time to hand back the keys. Absolutely the best van we’ve ever been away in, and we’ve had a number of motorhome holidays. The owners were delightful too!
A great selection of vans available on quirky - we were spoilt for choice! Quirky make sure all the admin bits are very easy.
We had a wonderful trip in Aero! Surprisingly easy to drive (given it's a bit bigger than our normal car!), and kitted out so well. We slept better than we do at home in the pop top, and I loved the attention to detail on the finishes and use of space. Spending time in Aero has inspired me to come home and sort out my house with some more tasteful storage solutions!
It was a great combination of feeling adventurous, but also so many small details thought of - from tea and coffee provided, to the colour coordinated salt and pepper pot, camping chairs, some cards and dice, cute fairy lights, a very detailed manual and lots of clever little storage options that really showed Steph and John's love for the van and vanlife.
Steph and John were super friendly and responsive, making the whole experience stress free and enjoyable.
As our first foray into campervanning, I'm delighted we chose Quirky campers and Aero.
Hampi from Ottery St Mary - Hampi made our first campervan adventure absolutely perfect! This beautifully converted van had everything we needed for a comfortable and memorable long weekend in Cornwall. From the thoughtful layout to the fully equipped interior, it was clear that a lot of care had gone into the design. The solar panels and battery setup worked flawlessly with no need for an electric hookup at all. There was plenty of smart storage, and the heating kept us cozy throughout our stay. Both Jack and Mike were incredibly helpful in walking us through everything and answering any queries. We truly loved our time in Hampi and can’t wait for the next trip!
We absolutely loved our trip in Archibald! Emma was really thorough in her handover which we really appreciated. Every detail had been thought of and we loved that our cocker spaniel Betty was made just as welcome as we were! Such a gorgeous camper with a relaxing interior and everything we could need provided- even little welcome treats for Betty.
Booking through Quirky Campers was so easy and we're so pleased we found this site.
We're now hooked on campervan holidays and will definitely be back! Thank you!
I was thinking of hiring a camper from Quirky Campers, but I'm starting to hear & read some bad customer experiences online & from personal recommendations.
Issues like with hold the depth for the slightly thing.
Being advised to stop & top up the oil every couple of hundred miles.
They seem to great until there's a problem. One customer with an ongoing issue is now being threatened with baliff action. So be warned.
We rented Tyson, from a very local van business, as our first van trip ever. The van was spotless and the configuration was perfect. Laura and her husband from Northern Conversions were so helpful and friendly making the whole experience a dream. We will definitely be renting again. Superb 5 star holiday from our doorstep!
I’ve hired 2 great campers from Quirky Campers. My experience has been excellent. The website is easy to use and they make sure the photos of each camper look good but accurately show each camper. My second hire has been my favourite so far (but the first one was lovely too). I hired “Shuggie” in Bristol. It was beautifully designed and had very clever space-saving furniture. It’s also powered by solar panels so you don’t need to pay for electric hook up. The bed was very comfortable and the black out curtains were very effective. A big thumbs up for Quirky Campers from me!
We had such a lovely time! We took Valerie to Wales for the weekend, she drives beautifully and had everything we could possibly need, even down to camping chairs!! We had SO MANY compliments on Valerie herself, I mean she IS beautiful!? 😍 it was our first time doing 'van life' and we honestly had so much fun that it's all we've talked about since we came home 😂 we freaking LOVE when we can take our dog with us anywhere too! Our shih tzu THOROUGHLY enjoyed herself and it made the whole weekend so much more special having her with us 😊 we've been spreading the word and telling everyone how great Ed is, even when our satnav took us 30 minutes in the wrong direction coming home!! Ed was so friendly and so helpful, he even dropped us a message to make sure we arrived in Wales safely and asked if we had any questions. Thank you so much again, cannot wait until the next trip! 🥰
Booking Hoots through Quirky Campers was very straight forward & QC were easily contactable when we had questions, which was reassuring as renting Hoots was our first campervan experience. We absolutely loved it. Hoots is immaculate, has an incredibly comfortable bed & Lucinda has thought of (& included) everything we could possibly have needed, so we were extremely comfortable. Lucinda was also very helpful, explaining how everything works & where everything is stored. It was also great to be able to leave our car safely on Lucinda's property while we were away. So all in all it was just a wonderful experience - thank you!
