Greenback Expat Tax Services Reviews 

Because my US CPA retired at the end of 2024, I needed to find someone new to help with my income taxes. A recommendation from Move to Cambodia led me to Greenback Expat Tax Services. Because I had had a 50 year relationship with my former CPA, I had come to relie on her to do most of my tax work; I just sent her my brokerage Company’s 1099s, my Schedule C and my SSA info and she did the rest. So it is true that I was “out of touch”.

Thankfully, my new agent, Shinjith, was able patiently to lead me through a long forgotten process. After my assistant in Thailand was able to locate my 2023 return, renewed hope began to arise. Shinjith quickly answered my many, many questions; thus, I/he was finally able to complete my tax return.

Then, he helped me finally be ably to pay my taxes through the IRS’s payment system.

Next year will hopefully be easier and Dhinjith has already promised to help me again!

Greenback has assigned me the same accountant each year. I feel like he has a great balance of explaining things, so I know what's actually going on, without overwhelming me with updates or instructions. A much more human experience than I got with H&R Block for Expats or generic (paid) TurboTax.

I have been using Padma Gunupati at Greenback for several years now, and I am always happy with her work and responsiveness to my questions. I would highly recommend her--and Greenback Expat Tax Services--for help preparing and filing all taxes necessary for Americans who are living abroad.

Second year using Greenback Expat Tax Services. Cannot recommend Rijo Augustine enough who has flled our taxes for the past 2 years.
Always filed our expat taxes from UK ourselves until retirement but pension filing made absolutely no sense to us. Thankfully, Rijo sorted it out for us.
Communication was fantastic - always got a response, if not immediately, within a few hours even with the time difference.
Will be definitely filing again with Rijo.

Tremendous company, super qualified accountants, and their process is so uniquely helpful to expats. Their process is by far the most simple and effective way of taking advantage of all the tax savings available for Americans outside the USA.

ABSOLUTELY AWFUL, RUDE, INCOMPETANT AND ACCUSATORY SERVICE

Total waste of my time - right before taxes were due

They wrongly accused me, 48 hours before taxes were due, that I am NOT a US greencard holder.

They also wrongly accused me of being outside the US for more than 6 months

On top of this

They also charge DOUBLE what any other service charges.

I spent DAYS working with their accountant Lini only to receive a rude, accusatory, inaccurate email from her accusing me of NOT being a greencard holder and also accusing me of being outside the US for 6 months. I had already supplied my dates of travel - which she was ignored.

I had already supplied my previous tax return. I was not asked in a polite manner for my greencard info, just a rude accusatory email

Why would I work with such a service?!!!! Immigrants go thru so much discrimination as it is!!!! Why would I hire an accountant who lacks decency and an ability to communicate in a professional manner!!!!

Have used Greenback for 8 years, the last 2 we returned to the States. Greenback is an excellent expat service and I decided to stay with them mainly because of my accountant, D Smith. She professionally handled my taxes when I lived abroad, navigated the complex tax situation when we returned to the US and now handles our US taxes. The whole process is always seamless. Thanks D!

I have lived in Thailand since February 18th 2024. I saw the Ads by Mike Wallace on Facebook and decided to give them a try. What a Mistake that was. I first chatted on line as I had concerns that I had not recieved a 1099 from Social Security. I was told that I could simply enter the dollar amount without uploading the 1099. Great, except there is no place to enter the dollar amount. Today was my third attempt to get help in entering the dollar amount. The first two by email, then again today via chat. The Chat lady showed being online, however after waiting several minutes for some type of reply, I gave up. If you are residing outside the USA I would advise you to save a great amount of grief and wasted time by avoiding this Outfit. What a Joke!!

I have filed my taxes with Greenback Tax Services for 5 years now, even though I am no longer an expat. I appreciate how simple their agents make the process and how quickly the taxes get filed.

I've filed my taxes with Greenback for the past several years and have been very happy. Filing taxes with them is very easy and fast.

Rare to have customer service that knows you and your history from consistency in staffing. My accountant knows me, remembers my history and makes my filing super easy.

Worth its weight in gold

We had a really great experience with our assigned representative. She responded to our inquiries very quickly. She was attentive and was able to finish our returns within a couple of weeks. The process was seamless, and we are very pleased with Greenback's service.

Super simple and straightforward tax filing

3rd year with Greenback. This year was more complex but Shinjith was steady and patient. I asked tons of questions and each time the response was prompt, professional and reflected a high level of expertise. I felt very relieved and grateful to have someone help me navigate through the tax ‘jungle’. Thanks again!

Stay away from this service!

The quality of service downgraded in the last few years as they hire from India to lower their cost but their professionals don't know the IRS rules. If you want to get your tax return reported late and then pay late fees, then stay with them.

Their COO recently quit and they have changed 4 accountants on me in two years! The last CPA refused to go on camera on our scheduled introduction video call and claimed that also their phone camera is broken (?!). So I’m supposed to pay $2,000 in fees to an accountant that doesn't have a basic professional standards or tools.

Avoid, avoid, avoid, there are other tax services.

I initially spoke with Greenback earlier on in the year and they seemed very professional. However, once I filled out their survey to get a return done, I stopped hearing from them. When the accountant finally emailed me back, they told me it would be one week until I got my return draft. I didn't hear back for a month, and still haven't heard back, despite 3 more emails to them requesting an update. This has never happened to me with other accounting services and it's very unprofessional. I now have had to fill out another tax survey at another company because it appears they're just not interested in responding.

I also sent a message to their help email and they were unresponsive.

Updating 04/03:

Greenback commented on this post and told me they didn't receive a response - however, i emmailed that same help desk email two weeks ago and haven't gotten any response, have not heard back from the accountant at all, and now they're writing responses on this page trying to pretend like I haven't responded to them.

I've worked with Greenback on my taxes for the last three years. My accountant Nisha has been so helpful each year, answering my questions and making the process really easy to follow. I'm always really pleased with how quickly the tax return is sorted, and I like having peace of mind knowing it's been done right.

I have been working with Greenback for many years and are once more very satisfied with their service. There was a change in accountant which meant some more back and forth than in previous years but I was pleased that she asked so many questions which in return was a good learning curve for me. Would highly recommend Greenback and look forward to next year. Knowing I work with them takes away so much stress in filing for US taxes while abroad.

Tracy at Greenback did a great job for me over many years. Thing got complicated because I wanted to go back 5 years and also because of name changes. She always helped and did everything required promptly. Doing USA tax returns overseas is not an option - they are complex documents.
