Outstanding rock climbing guide in Les Calanques!

Explore-Share connected me with an incredibly experienced rock climbing guide in Les Calanques, southern France. I was traveling on my own and this was the only way I could get in some rock climbing while I was in France. After the initial connection, my guide Andre and I communicated by email and logistics were easy and efficient. Explore-Share made sure we had connected and took care of payment and it was all extremely easy to manage.

The trip itself was spectacular. Les Calanques is unbelievably beautiful and Andre knows the area better than anyone (literally wrote the guide book!). We had some weather the second day and I thought it would be impossible to climb but he knew a protected bay which turned out to be perfect, t-shirt weather climbing, in spite of weather warnings in the rest of the area. Andre had all the gear, organized everything, and chose two very different, very interesting, challenging but accessible multi pitch routes that had incredible views. In addition to the climb guiding, Andre was also very knowledgeable about local history, ecology, and was an all around fantastic resource. I would highly recommend this trip!

Where do I begin

Where do I begin? I believe that the idea is good and, clearly, many people have had a good experience with this site. I hesitate to even write this because I may try to use this service again sometime in the future, but my experience was pretty awful. I paid for a mountain climb and then had the hardest time getting in touch with the guide. I reached out to the explore-share team and they all but shrugged and said 'good luck'. I am happy to dig up receipts of the conversations if anyone needs proof. I ended up paying over $2k for this event with no coordinating information or assurance that everything would go through because the guide was impossible to reach (I tried the site, his e-mail, two phone numbers) and, after conferring with friends and family who all said that this seemed a safety risk, I made the decision a week or so before I was supposed to fly from the US to Chamonix to not execute this climb. The guide himself said that we should circle back on this and try again in Summer 2025 and that I should contact him in January. I reached out to him several times from January on with no response.

Unfortunately, the lesson is this: do not use this service unless you have significant lead time and can establish a good rapport with the guide. Explore-Share will NOT refund you for a non-executed adventure and will not help you with the guides in question if you have any issue. Someone has essentially run off with my money and it's not quite worth it for me to hire a lawyer and seek some sort of legal correction. Best of luck to anyone using this service and I hope you have a better experience than I did.

Dear Richard,

We’re truly sorry to read about your experience. We understand how frustrating this must have been, especially given the time, cost, and preparation involved.

When you contacted us last year with concerns about the guide’s responsiveness, we immediately reached out to Carlos. He confirmed that all logistics for your Mont Blanc trip had been arranged and explained that, as is standard during the high season, final details would be shared around 10 days before departure. Based on this, we encouraged you to continue with your travel plans and reminded you that, as per the cancellation policy agreed upon at booking, cancellations within 21 days of the trip are non-refundable.

Carlos later indicated that if you were still interested in climbing this year, you could contact him to arrange a new trip. However, he did not propose transferring or crediting your original payment toward a future date. We’re sorry if this wasn’t made clearer at the time.

We agree that the lack of communication this year was disappointing, and we’ll be following up with Carlos to ensure similar situations are handled with more transparency going forward.

While we’re unfortunately unable to offer a refund beyond the agreed terms, we’d be happy to provide supporting documentation should you wish to submit a travel insurance claim.

Thank you again for your feedback, we take it seriously and use it to improve the experience for all travelers in our community.

Wishing you all the best,
The Explore-Share Team

Great guide

Paolo made an all out effort to get most out of the tour despite the harsh weather conditions. In addition to that the tour was enjoyable for áll of us with various levels of skiing skills.

Great Ice climbing day with certified guide Lucien

We had a great day with Lucien who introduced us to ice climbing! Lucien is passionnate about mountains and climbing in general. He shared his passion when teaching us the specifcis of ice climbing in terms of gear, anchors, climbing techniques. Super clear communication, clear plan for the day and flexible to accomodate our level and progression. He also gave us lots of tips about the region, as he is from there. We'll be back!

This was my first real hike and both myself and my gal are so happy to found and taken the time to travel to Ciudad Guzman and spend a day with Manuel our outstanding guide. His knowledge of the volcanos and the local history made our hike so awe inspiring only seconded by the overwhelming views and the experience of a lifetime. Thanks so much Manuel for sharing your day with us. Steve and Jaime from Canada, we hope you have a chance to visit Banff. Until we meet again mi amigo.

MTB Tour El Chaltén

Great way to escape from busy El Chalten main area. Bike ride is very scenic, especially in the beginning & was a lot of fun.
You have a lot of time for the small hike to Huemul Glacier (must do!) and relax at Lago Desierto before you start the ride.
I highly recommend, even If you're just for a few days here.

super fun time with skilled guide

My boyfriend and I did this climbing excursion together. It was AMAZING!!! It can't get better than this. The guide, Dimitris was supportive, experienced, and very friendly. We laughed, told stories, and climbed a lot (of course). Made a lot of beautiful and fun memories.

Good experience

A guide certainly isn’t needed for most people on the Lago Cerro Castillo hike. The trail is very well marked and traveled. But I did not know that ahead of time, and as my companions couldn’t join me on the hike, it was nice to have the company.
My original guide, Pere, unfortunately couldn’t make it because of an injury, but he arranged with another, Javier, so there was no interruption at all. Javier was very good to work with.
Communication from Explore-share was excellent throughout.

3Summits is great and I highly…

3Summits is great and I highly recommend them. I signed up through Explore Share. Alvaro set it up, Karla handled logistics, Chris was my guide, and Pati did a superb job handling everyrhing on the actual trip. I changed my mind about everything (dates, volcano, number of days on trip, private or shared guide) and they were patient. Karla was totally on top of everything and efficiently provided extra services (rides for example) that were a little pricey but worth it for me to feel safe and have things be easy. I finally decided on Pico, 3 days. The extra day was nice, I stayed at my guide's Bed and Breakfast type place, close to the volcano, that included hot showers and excellent home cooked food. It probably helped to acclimatize. My guide Chris was great, quiet but he did tell me he thought I could do it when I was thinking I couldn't and he was right, I did. He has done it a couple hundred times and although it was very windy and I thought I might get blown off he kept me tight and I didn't. Great experience.

Great hike! Great guide!

We booked a hike with Facundo to Glacier Ojo del Albino and it was the highlight of our stay in Ushuaia! Facundo was a great guide, helping us safely ascent to the top- and the views were spectacular! He was very informative and full of local knowledge and easy to chat with as we hiked. He was on time for pickup, packed a nice lunch, and provided the gear we wouldn’t have had with us. It was a great way to spend the day!

Not the best experience

I made reservations through 'explore-share' back in October of 2024 and paid in full for a guided climb up mount Aconcagua, when I reached out to them (2 days before my flight to Argentina) about meeting up before the hike they said that they didn't have my information on file. The guide told me that 'explore-share' didn't pay them the money for me to join the group and 'explore-share' was blaming the guide saying that he admitted fault. Nobody wanted to take blame for this mistake and I ended up paying an extra $4,800 to do the hike. They had other options for me but ALL of them involved me spending more money to cover for their mistakes and paying extra to push my flight further than expected, not only that but I had to pay for extra nights at a hotel because a guide wasn't ready when I landed. I highly recommend going through other companies directly. This company didn't care that I would've been stranded in another country with nowhere to go. Please take this as a warning. DONT go through 'explore-share' to plan ANY of your hikes.

Hi Thomas,

We’re truly sorry that your experience didn’t go as planned. While we don’t organize trips ourselves, we take full responsibility for supporting our users when things go wrong, and that’s what we did here.

The moment we learned about the issue, our team worked tirelessly for 48 hours to secure the best possible alternatives for you. We remained in constant communication, doing everything in our power to find a solution that worked for you. We covered over $2,000 in costs to ensure you could still make your trip, just as we would have covered additional costs had you chosen a different option. The guide also acknowledged his mistake and was willing to contribute $1,000 toward a resolution.

In the end, you opted to continue with a private guide (while your initial booking was for a group tour) on the same dates so you could keep the schedule you had for the rest of your trip in Argentina, being fully aware of the additional cost. Securing this last-minute arrangement was only possible thanks to our strong relationships with the best local companies, who trust us and were willing to step in at short notice. Despite the setback, we were relieved to see that you were still able to complete the expedition as planned, on the original dates and duration, and even reach the summit of Aconcagua.

We understand that the situation was far from ideal, and we genuinely regret that you remain dissatisfied. That said, we stand by the commitment, care, and effort we put into ensuring your trip could still happen in the best possible way under challenging circumstances.

Amazing day and guide

Amazing day and guide

Went on a private full day mountain climping trip with guide Toti in Monserrat, Spain.

Did not know what to expect, but had I had any expectations, Toti would have blown them away. Definitely one of the best days I’ve had. He was also very comfortable to be around, and cared a lot about safety while climping

I had only tried climping once before, but Toti made me feel like a pro.
Money spent very well, can definitely recommend.

I have used many climbing and back…

I have used many climbing and back country guides over the years and Joao is near or at the top of the list. He is very experienced and also a great instructor. He is very patient and encouraging and a pleasure to spend time with in general. I would HIGHLY recommend Joao to both experienced climbers and climbers that are in their early stages. 5 stars all the way.

Greedy and unempathetic company just taking a cut for themselves.

The experience with the guide was great. However, my girlfriend couldnt attend the course because of damaging a tendon in her foot. This happened a week befpre the course, 3 other people could still attend the course but explore share doesn't want to give my gf her money back "because of cancellation policy" which is absurd - you can only get anything back if you cancel more than 21 days before. This is also a violation against the Norwegian law where the course took place. They have no intention in understanding or just behaving in a humanly manner. They also didnt respond the whole week i tried to discuss this with them but just before you book the course - they are obviously super proactive and pushy!

AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS and just find the guide yourself.

Dear Piotr,

We are very sorry about your girlfriend’s injury and that she was unable to participate in the course. We completely understand how disappointing this must have been for both of you.

Regarding the cancellation, we want to clarify that when you booked through Explore-Share, the terms and conditions, including the cancellation policy, were accepted. As outlined in these terms, cancellations made less than 21 days before the trip are non-refundable. This policy is in place to ensure fairness to both guides and participants, as last-minute cancellations make it difficult to fill the spot. These terms were also confirmed by the guide (Jørn) himself.

When you informed us about your girlfriend’s cancellation, we promptly reached out to the guide to verify the situation. He confirmed that the course proceeded as planned with the remaining participants and that he had discussed the cancellation with your group. He also mentioned that your girlfriend’s situation should be handled through her travel insurance, which is standard practice for medical-related cancellations.

We acknowledge that there were some delays in communication, and we regret any frustration this caused. The guide was actively leading tours in the mountains at the time of your request, which is why it took a few days to respond. However, as soon as he was available, he provided the necessary details and confirmed the cancellation.

We genuinely regret that this was not the resolution you were hoping for. If you need any documentation for the insurance claim, we would be happy to assist.

Wishing you all the best,
The Explore-Share Team
