Avoid Empower at all costs

Avoid Empower at all costs, they are the worst run companies I've ever had any contact with.
If you need any changes made such as bank info you must order a form to mail back snail mail. How is this possible for a company handling retirement funds not having online requests.
Absolutely a horrific company and the worst part is you are locked onto it so you can not change.
Do yourself a favor and say no to this company!

Decided to make my first RMD

Decided to make my first RMD. Went through the process and towards the end, find out if you add your bank information for payout, you have to wait 15 days before you can make the withdrawal. They will send you an expedited check for $ 40.00.
I don't trust the USPS with delivering checks.

Horrible financial company

Horrible financial company. They refused to accept a legal court order and make you jump through various hoops. The staff are absolutely rude and condescending. They charge fees as your money sits in their account. I have had to go back and forth through out the year. My identification, social security and court order are legal documents of Identification. Updating personal information shouldn't be this difficult!!!

A decision we are still recovering from.

We transfered our investments to Empower. However, right away they decided that we needed a more conservative portfolio. They sold a portion of what were great positions, and to this day still haven't recovered from the damage their expert models chose.

Scammy, outsourced, liars.

When requesting my 401k loan it said it would take up to 10 days. We're on day 7 and they're now telling me that it will take an ADDITIONAL 12 DAYS. This company is crooked and their calls are all routed to the Phillipines or something and its impossible to understand them. Also hearing a Phillipino who cant speak english ask for your Social Security and info immediately seems untrustworthy like you are being scammed. Unforturnately we cant choose our 401k providers but damn this company sucks.

Avoid Embower If You Can

This is a very poorly run company and lackluster way for people to invest in their retirement. Investment options are scarce, the website is horrible, and the customer service is essentially non existent. Locating documents is beyond cumbersome and available documents seem like they are purposely designed to not be user-friendly to find helpful information. I hope my company switches out of Empower. If you have a chance to not invest through Empower, I would strongly recommend doing that.

I’m trying to get form for 401k inheritance disclaimer. After about an hour trying to get information on filing death claim and getting form, told to submit ALL via mail (no uploads available like current firms), and then knew nothing about disclaimer form but said put in request and “back office” would send me. Still waiting, and very concerned after all other negative reviews that I’ll get anything. Horrible service.

Horrible customer service!

Horrible customer service!! Over a month to get money out of an annuity account. Had a problem and called, got totally the wrong information so we wasted an entire week waiting for the money. Called back and finally got someone with a brain. Now the withdrawal has finally been approved. Ridiculous!! Go anywhere else!

They won’t wire the money to Schwab

I’ve been trying to take money out of my Empower account and move it over to Schwab for 45 days. Every time we call it’s a different answer. I’ve talked to five or six people. I’ve done everything they’ve asked, but now they simply just don’t reply or do it. So now I’m gonna call back in for about a seventh time tomorrow when it’s just obvious executives are making it so painfully that they can make every last nickel off your money. I know that’s business but it’s too blatantly obvious and I’ve missed a nice run.

Negative stars for Daily Account Access Failures and…

Negative stars - Daily Repeated Account Access Failures over the course of several months and Unacceptable Platform Issues

I’ve been unable to reliably access my Empower Retirement account for months due to repeated login failures and meaningless error messages like “an error has occurred.” This is a financial platform, and the lack of basic functionality and transparency is unacceptable.

Today, I spent over an hour on hold with support, reset my password using a temporary credential, and briefly regained access—only to be locked out again the same evening using the new password I just created. This is not a one-off issue; it’s a pattern.

On top of that, requiring users to disable VPN access just to log in is both unreasonable and a red flag from a security and usability standpoint.

There is also no effective self-service option to manage or roll over funds, forcing reliance on a broken support process that wastes customers’ time.

At this point, I’ve lost confidence in your platform entirely and am moving my 401(k) assets to another provider.

I expect a direct explanation for:

* The repeated login failures
* The lack of meaningful error messaging
* The VPN restriction requirement
* The absence of reliable self-service functionality

This experience is unacceptable for a company managing retirement funds.

I would give them zero stars if it let me. I have been trying to withdraw my funds and move it to another company and they refuse to release it. I am consolidating and have transferred from other companies in one day. It has been since February with this company and they keep saying they need something else. The company that is going to receive the funds is dumbfounded. They say they have never encountered this. Can you believe that they will not release my money? Unless, you want the same situation, I highly recommend that you not use this company. And if you do, good luck being able to withdraw it.

Empowerment Retirment Savings is the…

Empowerment Retirment Savings is the worst retirement fund. I was attempting to add an Employer sponsored Roth IRA plan to my Pre-Tax plan. Not only did they misguided me to open a new Roth IRA separate from my Employer Retirement plan, I was transferred 10 times, called 5x to attempt creating the Roth account, and correct their error in closing my pre- taxed account. Worst off, they tell me i have to wait 3 months to place back my pre tax account.

Withdrawal from spouse retirement.

Filled out paper work for withdrawal request back in February. I have called 3 times and each time I was informed that I left something blank.
Mind you the customer representative helped all three times with the paperwork.
