Hide the insurance charges and CLEAN your cars…

Rented a car in Chicago and they must have emptied an entire bottle of Fabreeze as the car 100% smelled so bad it was disgusting. I don't use air fresheners and certainly would never use that much it was crazy. Clean the car don't air freshener it! Added to that their tactics of getting you to pay insurance are nuts and when I called back and asked why the added charges I was told I have to go back to the rental counter to correct. I told them I'm an hour away already and they said well that's the only way to correct. BS...... then talked to a manager who told me I have to fill out a form and send in a complaint.....sure because they play games its on the customer how nice! And I never got the form. Absurd will never use Dollar again!

DOLLAR IS A SCAM

Let me start with saying the customer service agent was very nice and helpful! I asked for tolls by plate. Was never told I was getting a flat $13 a day toll charge. Agent convinced me to take the fuel prepayment option. Normally I never do this! Out of habit I filled the fuel before returning the car. I went inside to explain the mistake I made. They informed me nothing they can do! I WILL NEVER GIVE DOLLAR MY BUSINESS!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely Terrible scam company

Absolutely Terrible scam company, be extra careful with the web for booking. It updated my requested dates for some reason at the last second for 3 months after I needed it. When I got to the airport in another state they couldn't help me or refund the fees.

by far the worst car rental…

This is by far the worst car rental experience I have ever had.

I was charged twice for the exact same rental, and despite providing proof, the company has refused to refund the duplicate charge. This is not a misunderstanding — it is a clear billing error that they are choosing to ignore.

Customer service has been useless and dismissive. Every attempt to resolve the issue has led to delays, copy-paste responses, or outright denial, as if keeping customers’ money unfairly is normal business practice. No accountability, no professionalism, no resolution.

What makes this even worse is that once they have your money, they simply stop helping you. I should not have to fight to get back money that was taken from me twice for the same service.

If I could give a zero star

If I could give a zero star, I would. I called to change my return time of a vehicle to 6 pm. I was told okay by a lady and advised that she would send me an updated email regarding same. However, when I received the email, it still had the old information.

I called back and was told that the 6 pm time was listed but now it would cost me extra money to keep that reservation. I said that couldn’t possibly be right and asked to speak with a supervisor. She said she had no supervisor and that I would have to call back. I said I shouldn’t have to call back to get a supervisor. She hung up on me.

I called back and reached the Philippines this time. I spoke with Mark who referred me to “supervisor” Chris. Per “Chris”, he is the only supervisor in the “world” for Dollar Rental Car Company. He didn’t even have colleagues that I could speak with on this particular night. Rather, he is the only supervisor in the company. I found it comical when he told me he was from the Philippines and couldn’t connect me to anyone else in the world. He did tell me that I may have better luck tomorrow (which is a Sunday) and should call back then.

When I indicated I would just take my money back, he said those were 3rd party fees and I would have to contact them directly to get my money back for that.

I called again, again getting the Philippines and reaching a lady that although she was NOT a supervisor, had listened to the phone message. She knew all of the specifics without even knowing my reservation number or name. She said she would send me over to the Billing Department — WHAT now this is new information bc no one to this point had mentioned there being a Billing Department in charge.

She connected me over to the Billing Department. I was on hold for an hour before someone took the call! Although nice, the billing department indicated that only the reservation line could handle the matter.

The billing department indicated that they were the wrong department and I actually needed the department who transferred me. He sent me back to that department and the same lady, Jonna, once again knew all of the specifics without me telling her. I asked to speak with Chris and get this! She advised me that there was no Chris that was a supervisor!!!!! GO FIGURE!!!!!

My reservation is still active but am certain that it will not be when I get myself and my 12 travellers to the DFW area from Spokane, Wa.

One would think that Dollar Rental Car would not want this extensive backlash over $42.00. I told “Chris” that I was going to write a review. He clearly and emphatically stated that he he couldn’t do anything and to be honest, he did not care. So, Dollar, more of your bad customer service is exposed.

Fraud......

Updated at the end.....Fraud......
The car was fine, wasn't actually cleaned which was very annoying, however they are trying to charge me for an extra day rental as they didnt log the car return until later in the day..... I have now had to send them evidence that I was 20 miles away and clearly couldn't have returned the car when they said I did......
Do not use this company

Update...... so after multiple back and fourth, and me giving time and dated photographic evidence that I was 20 miles away when I was meant to have returned the car, they have finally accepted it is their mistake.
The committed to reimburse me for the wrong charges, which they have done, but they have now short changed me the amount by circa 5%....total disgrace.

I have now made a follow up formal complaint and directly requested compensation for my experience, and my own admin time.......

cheated at the Liberia Airport in…

Rented a car at the Liberia Airport in Costa Rica. Followed Booking.com recommendation for insurance. Arrived at counter double-insured for collision liability, with full documentation, bought and credit card coverage. Dollar refused both and would not give us a car unless we paid another $270 for their insurance, over 50% what the rental cost. Marked the contract for a full tank of gas, when in fact the car gauge showed 4/8 full. Car was a junker. All in all, Dollar found every possible way to add unjustified costs. Took nearly an hour at the counter. Dollar is now owned by Hertz, and I will avoid both in the future. Car rental brand names are meaningless when local franchise owners cheat customers, and the rental brand will not stand behind their customers. That's Dollar.

Car rental booking #1378831632614456 (Horrible Company)

Car rental booking #1378831632614456
I usually never write negative reviews about anyone, but I was ripped off badly by this car rental company. I initially prepaid the entire rental charge prior to pickup with MyTrip.com, and when I came to pick up the car at Dollar Rental, they upcharged me $197 and pretty much forced me to take this extra liability insurance, which I never agreed to in the original agreement.
Plain and simple, horrible service. They steal from customers in broad daylight. They are horrible human beings in every aspect. Please stay away from this company for your own sanity.

Avoid Dollar car rentals

Very poor experience. When we got to the desk they refused to let us try our cases in the car. They wanted us to pay an extra $260 to hire a large vehicle which we didn’t want. They said they didn’t have the next size up. Rather than pay them, we got a taxi to take some of the cases at a cost of $70. We managed to get the suitcases in on the way back. We have been sent a bill for two small toll charges plus $9.99 admin fee and they will charge the admin fee for each day you go through a toll. AVIOD THIS COMPANY.

I am extremely disappointed with my experience with Dollar Car Rental. I paid for services that were never rendered, and despite this, my money has not been returned.
I have attempted to resolve this issue through the proper channels , but so far I have received no resolution and no refund. Holding a customer’s payment for services that were not provided is unacceptable and unprofessional.
I am requesting that Dollar Car Rental immediately review my case and return the amount paid. This situation could be easily resolved with proper customer service and accountability, yet it has been unnecessarily prolonged.
I hope this review prompts a response from Dollar Car Rental, as I would prefer to settle this matter directly rather than pursue further action. Future customers should be cautious until this issue is addressed.

BEWARE FOLKS!!

BEWARE FOLKS!!
My booking completely changed after confirming my booking from a Dollar text link I received days before my rental to check in! My booking went from a holiday discount of $264.87 per wk, to $1300+ per wk! I was told by dollar customer service, not to worry, they will honor their emailed confirmation of the original booking at the counter, so always keep it saved! I was also reassured by the 800# cust service rep, that Dollar will add a Free driver by showing both our current AAA membership cards, which I was so excited to hear!

When I arrived, the counter rep had to manually change the new amount due, to get it close to what I was supposed to pay, which was a few dollars more, but it was still an annoying process to experience that shouldn’t have been given to her to fix to begin with.

After getting the new rental amount situated, I then request to add my free driver and show both our AAA cards. Welp.. my counter rep then said, she couldn’t honor the free added driver, bc my booking needed to be booked through AAA and not through Dollar rental. Ughh.. make up your mind Dollar on which it is, bc it’s upsetting to find out when I get to the counter that I’ve now been bamboozled by an 800# cust service rep! The rep never mentioned my booking needed to be booked through AAA to get the free added driver discount. I just needed to show both our AAA cards at the counter and that’s it. Nope.. my frustration came back with a new eye twitch.

Yes, I’m still disappointed that Dollar wanted to charge me $15 a day for an added driver after I was reassured it was FREE! NO - DO NOT CLICK any rental car text link to check in!! Yes, it’s always the best feeling to get the cheapest car rental I can find and yes, even a few dollars more messed that up, bc that’s how my twisted mind works. I’m now thinking: this is happening to everyone renting cars: send out text links to check in > modify check in rental agreement > fix at the counter > up charge a few dollars = it’s now a few Dollar win. Thx for coming to my Ted Talk. 12/2025 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone..

Consumer Disrespect

On December 14, 2025, my husband and I made a reservation for a vehicle in the Special category with Dollar car rental, through the Rentcars platform. The vehicle pickup was scheduled for December 23, 2025, at Sacramento International Airport, California. Upon arriving at the rental counter, with all travel logistics previously arranged, we were unexpectedly informed that the security deposit (hold) and insurance charges could only be processed using a credit card issued by a U.S.-based financial institution.

We are Brazilian citizens and have been in the United States for approximately one (1) month, a period insufficient for obtaining a local credit card. This requirement was not disclosed at the time of booking, nor was it clearly stated in the contractual terms presented during the reservation process. I would also like to highlight that, about one month ago, during a rental with Hertz Corporation, there were no restrictions on using my international Brazilian credit card to process both the security deposit and insurance fees.

The lack of prior notice resulted in significant financial and emotional impacts, as we had confirmed hotel reservations in Lake Tahoe and had planned this trip to fulfill a personal dream, with accommodations paid and family arrangements fully organized. Due to the imposed limitation, we were forced to cancel the vehicle reservation, which ultimately disrupted the entire trip that had been thoroughly structured in advance.

Additionally, we have already completed the cancellation process and, to date, are still awaiting the refund of the amount paid, further intensifying our feeling of helplessness and consumer disrespect.

Changing commercial conditions without prior notice—especially when it involves restrictions on international credit cards—constitutes a serious breach of the duty to inform, a fundamental principle of consumer rights, and violates the legitimate expectations of the customer, particularly considering that this has never been the historical commercial practice communicated or applied to international reservations.

I also acknowledge that the in-person service provided by the Dollar employee was cordial and attentive. However, the agent stated that they were unable to offer any solution due to internal operational constraints, which does not mitigate the company’s responsibility regarding the failure to properly disclose reservation policies.

Finally, I express my deep dissatisfaction and indignation with the handling of the reservation process, which has caused logistical, financial, and emotional losses, as well as the frustration of a trip carefully planned for a date of great personal and family significance.

Unfortunately not the greatest…

Unfortunately not the greatest experience! We had to wait 45 minutes for the van rental to get cleaned only to get a used 2023 van rental? Are these cars not supposed to be 2025 at least?? The agent gave us a discount but had I known the car was a 2023, I would have asked for explanation!!
