I like Ancestry

I like Ancestry, however as a person living on a pension, I struggle with the cost of things. I realise that there has to a cost involved but I think it is quite expensive. Maybe the price points could be tweaked somewhat to make it more attractive. I'm sure I would do more if it were less costly. I was disappointed in the DNA result, it was far too generic and did not tell me anything I did not already know. With Scots ancestry I was hoping for something more.

No two months are ever the same with…

No two months are ever the same with Ancestry, who are constantly adding new records to the site, enabling you to add more information to each ancestor's record. I tend to log on most days and can see quickly what has been added, and the tips can be fascinating, even though sometimes in the multi thousands, but containing many nuggets.

The Satisfactions and Surprises of Family History.

Well I can honestly say that Ancestry has been a fantastic and major help in finding out the history of my family. The amount of detail, and how it has increased, is amazing. I am a Bristolian and knew my family on both sides had long links with the city but a recent family gathering made me prepare a tree and going back to the late 1600’s in some cases the family group was from Bristol or no more than twenty miles away. There was one major exception on my mum’s side where my paternal great gran, whilst born in Bristol, the family came from Cork and a significant element of Irish DNA. The family came over in the 1850’s and I assume a direct reaction to the famine. Another surprise my best mate at school and who lived on the other side of Bristol I found was a cousin of my cousin whose ancestors were linked by mining communities on the eastern edge of the city in the 1800’s and their great great grandfather had been sent to Melbourne as a convict in the 1840’s, he stole glassware and other items from a chapel in a village my cousin lived in for 40 years.

Brothers from other mothers

Brothers from Other Mothers

I was dragged up in the 1950’s in Crawley, Sussex & my first day at Hazelwick Secondary Modern School in September 1959 was next a guy called Robert (Bob) Batey, We got on well & became firm friends for the rest of our schooling. We were both in the Scouts & both loved football. I left School in October 1964 to join the West Sussex Constabulary as a Police Cadet & was posted to Shoreham. Bob stayed on for a further year & then joined a Crawley Bank. On completing my Training I was posted to Bognor Regis, & lost touch a bit with Bob. I received information that Bob had switched careers in 1969 & had joined Sussex Police & was at at Sandgate Police Training School in Kent & I asked him to let me know where he was going to be posted. Sussex by now had amalgamated all five Force in the County to one which was now the Sussex Constabulary. The call from Bob came through & he told me he had been posted to Bognor Regis & that he was on ‘A’ Section, which was my section. Needless to say I put him through it a bit baptism on his arrival. But despite that we remained good mates & he was our Best Man when I married in 1971. On marriage I was posted to Brighton as I had waived my rites to remain in West Sussex. Bob & our careers never crossed from then on. As Bob was mainly a Special Branch Officer & I was mainly a Drugs & CID. On retirement in 1996 I started to look at my ancestry & found out, out of the blue, that my Great Grandfather was a Met PC in 1888 in Whitechapel (Jack the Ripper time & area). I did some research & found his warrant numbers, collar number etc., but he did not complete his service & left without a pension. My father knew nothing of this. End of story or so I thought?

As Bob is 3 days older than me I thought I would have a look at his story & he always told me he was an Essex Boy!! So imagine my shock when I found that HIS great Grandfather was an Acting Sergeant in the Met at the same time as my Great Grandfather, the difference being he nearly served all his time, but went out on the sick with a pension but sadly lasted 5 days after retirement & dying. Sad or what. Bob again knew nothing of this & was as surprised as I was. He’s still my Best mate now to this day. Hence my headline.

Ancestry helps to make family research easy

I love the way the family tree is arranged on Ancestry and the way you can switch between horizontal and vertical is really helpful. Each person's profile page is also beautifully arranged in a very logical and helpful way. Ancestry keeps adding / rearranging features and I hope that, in the long term, this will not make the site too cumbersome and fiddly.

This is quite addictive

This is quite addictive, Researching my family and my husband's . It can be revealing. I would say you have to be careful and where possible double check when information has come from someone else looking into the same family and don't take it for granted they have the correct information, this half the fun and if it feels wrong it probably is.

Hi there. You have captured the true spirit of genealogy so brilliantly! That "addictive" feeling of uncovering revealing family stories is what keeps us all hooked, but your advice about member-submitted trees is spot on.

Trusting your gut when something "feels wrong" and taking the time to double-check sources yourself is what separates a good tree from a great one—and as you said, doing the detective work is half the fun! Thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom with the community, and happy hunting as you continue researching both sides of your family!

No need for so many duplicated buttons…

No need for so many duplicated buttons to navigate to DNA results on homepage, only ONE offering one click access is needed.
Homepage too cluttered, navigation round site is poor and confusing, updates cause far too many errors and pages unavailable.

Hi there. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We appreciate your direct input regarding the homepage layout, and we completely understand how frustrating it is to deal with a cluttered screen or unexpected page errors after site updates.

Our goal with the homepage design is to provide quick entry points for members using different devices and screen sizes, but we clearly hear your point that having multiple redundant DNA buttons makes the page feel overly busy. Streamlining site navigation to give you direct, one-click access without unnecessary clutter is a priority, and your feedback regarding page simplicity and overall navigation is extremely valuable to our design team.

Regarding the page errors and availability issues you mentioned following site updates, our technical teams are actively working to improve platform stability during system rollouts to ensure a smoother, uninterrupted experience.

We take user experience feedback like yours very seriously as we continue to make updates, and we truly appreciate you helping us pinpoint areas where we can clean up the design and improve overall site performance.

helpful

i think it's great discovering the family tree, however ancestry could be more helpful by helping the person involved by showing him or her where they are going wrong without additional charges being imposed by them and yes i do need help in putting my tree in order!!!

My quest with Ancestry started bacause…

My quest with Ancestry started bacause my father never knew his father. His mother told him from an early age he had passed away. My father had died in a car wreck and never talked about his family. I was determined to find out who his father was. All I had was my fathers 1934 birth certificate as a starting point. It took two years of research to discover my grandfather and his family. Also found the cottage my father was born in and visited the cottage. The owner of the cottage had all the deeds going back a couple of hundred years so I found when my great grandmother had bought the cottage. That started an oddessy discovering my fathers uncles and descendants.
Through Ancestry I have found and communicated with relations in the US, Canada, Australia and Jamaica.
Ancestry has made the process of discovering family lineage relivively easy albeit starting with scant information. It is addictive and highly recommended.

A Murder

A Murder, a Saxon hoard and several vicars. On a whim joined ancestry during covid and have found some amazing stories of my family. Also found brave 1st Worls War soldiers, a drunk who went to jail for neglecting his family and how my family migrated from other areas of the UK for work in the developing industrial city of Manchester. Spookily my great grandfather was born one street away from where I live in a beautiful town and I didn't know I was a local. Ancestry should be used in schools as it's so fascinating. Still hetying to grips with some of the resources but love how you can contact others who have mutual family members to discover the links.

I have been with Ancestry since…2004

I have been with Ancestry since initially in 2001 for a couple of years and then rejoined 2004. I have six tree’s as I have helped family by also doing their tree’s also I have done both mine, my son’s and my partners DNA. I have been in contact with several cousins and we have help each other with finding information. Which is the benefit of this site you may have gone down a line which helps several other people and they may have gone down a line you need help with. Also the amount of records on Ancestry world wide is phenomenal.

Very poor service

Very poor service. So little is given now on the basic subscription (£100) that I can see very little compared to the service of 5 and more years ago.
I wouldn't recommend to anyone but I keeo it so that I can view my family tree.

Keep changing the set up of the records. Very annoying.

There are many records available on here and I have been a member for more than 20 years so they must have been doing something right. However what really gets on my nerves is when they change how they present the records and the latest one is the worst. Who ever thought that this is an improvement is very wrong and I am thinking of going to another company after all this time.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns, Jacqueline. Thanks as well for choosing Ancestry to assist you in your family history research over the years, too. We understand that updates to the look of how any particular feature can initially seem jarring. We can confirm that, from time to time, we update the Ancestry website to give our members the best possible experience, like improving legibility or modernizing Ancestry’s website, to name a few examples. Our latest record page display is designed to help our users quickly and confidently evaluate historical documents. We have some more information on our blog about this change, in case you'd like to learn more, which we hope can help you with the new experience. You can review that here: https://bit.ly/45Xnb5n
