Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 58 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many people found the helpline and customer service unhelpful, reporting difficulties reaching actual people and encountering dismissive advisors who seemed unwilling to understand their issues. Reviewers frequently encountered staff with poor attitudes, who appeared impatient, lacked compassion, or were rude during interactions. Customers also expressed concerns about high prices for services, feeling they were being overcharged or taken advantage of for basic assistance. Additionally, some services were perceived as limited in scope or quality, such as not providing practical assistance or failing to acknowledge communications. However, some customers also noted positive interactions with staff, describing them as kind, friendly, and helpful. These individuals appreciated the effort made by certain employees to assist them with their needs, often going out of their way.

APPALLING DREADFUL SERVICE

If you could give ZERO star then I would. I was told and it was on the website that there was a drop in 9-5 Monday to Friday in Sutton to make a wasted joined top be told you have to make an appointment. Explained it also said on website but no one interested. Did not receive call back as toldI would and when I rang to ask for HELP I spoke to PATRICK who immediately told me " we are not a one stop shop you know" and then treated me disgracefully and being put on hold for 15 minutes .I was recommended to call AGEUK by the cancer team and the local authority after needing help with both my parents. Absolutely disgusting service and AGEUK should hang their head in shame !!!

Dear Mr Burton, thank you for getting in touch and we are very sorry to hear about your bad experience with the customer service at Age UK Sutton and for any upset or disappointment this must have caused. Like all local Age UKs, Age UK Sutton is an independent charity, responsible for their own management and day-to-day running. We at Age UK, the national charity, share a similar brand with all local Age UKs, but we are not a head office or a governing body.
Therefore, they are better placed to look into your concerns, so I would recommend contacting them directly so that they can try to resolve this issue for you. You can find their details here: https://www.ageuk.org.uk/sutton/about-us/contact-us/ I hope this is helpful and that you are able to resolve this. A person to be wary of called Lyn.

A person by the name of Lyn visited my wife & I as I had concerns for my wife's safety due to her falling down several times recently.
The meeting went well & she appeared to be most helpful giving us leaflets on place's to attend & things to do, the meeting went well that is until 2 days later when my wife received a phone call from her asking my wife how she was, she then said I had to report you to Social Services for Hording, my wife said Hording what!
She replied there is stuff in your house that is a fire risk 🔥, we also have a fire alarm system that was put in by the Fire Brigade.
Lyn only went in to our living room & we only have a three piece sofa, a coffee table, a sideboard, a t/v & a dining room table that we use most days, I hardly call this Hording especially as she only went into 1 room, I find that this woman is a noisy busybody that might need psychiatric medical help.
Lynn reminded me of Nurse Cratchet in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, outwardly nice, inwardly a nasty person!
This type of person is out to cause you trouble & in reality is too fond of her own importance & this will be the last time I will reach out for help.
Do yourself a favour and be careful who you ask for help!!!

Good afternoon Ian, thank you very much for your post. I was sorry to read about the experience you and your wife have had.
I would like to look into this further for you, and wondered if you could kindly take a moment to email me at the following address : feedbackatageuk@ageuk.org.uk

Here at Age UK the national charity, we work with over 130 local Age UK's around the country who are independent charities in their own right, and whom I am sure would like to hear of all feedback, positive or otherwise.
If you are able to kindly drop me an email with some further details I would be more than happy to help.
Thank you and kindest regards

Useless

Disappointed and upset at response from advisor. She was clearly in a rush and showed no empathy at all. Advice given was not helpful and advisor was unable to answer my questions about issues I am facing, despite me explaining these issues in an email to sane person a week before. Obviously did no research and failed to signpost me to other community organisations that may be able to help.

Advisor had done no research and simply wanted to get rid of me. Made me feel a burden. Upsetting experience. I expected more from a charity that's supposed to help people. Don't know why people work or volunteer for a charity when they obviously don't care!

Absolutely disgusted with a staff…

Absolutely disgusted with a staff member of this store. Cannot believe my blind disabled mother was not only falsely accused of shoplifting a jumper which turned out to be her own. She was abruptly stopped then when she explained her condition she was mocked and laughed at. Makes me sick that this is ok and was not taken further. I will be complaining externally. As a store manager of a large retail store I cannot agree with this behaviour. We will be escalating this.

From bad to worse...!!!

You replied to my previous review on price increases and the very first thing you did was to deny any collective responsibility - you do this in virtually every response you make. Passing the buck - "not me guv".
You then go on to say you would be happy to enquire about the charges and take forward my concerns with the local Age UK.
What is the point of doing that when you've already admitted you can't do anything about it anyway???
What's wrong with you? It's nothing short of a fob off.
Are you not concerned that 79% of these reviews give you only one star...?

Age UK sent carers to help my late…

Age UK sent carers to help my late father, who passed away last week.
They were useless, and for an organisation supposedly focussed on caring for the elderly, they are nothing more than a scam.
They would hardly do anything he requested, even though he was PAYING for their services.
When he passed away I phoned them to let them know my father has passed away, yet I got a phone call the next day "our carer went to visit your father and there was no answer" !! How useless and uncaring can you get !!
To top it off, I went to his house today, and there are invoices requesting money for their services, even though he has been dead over a week.
Age UK you can do one, you useless, uncaring, absolute scammers.

Wanted advice for my elderly infirm mother so phoned contact number to be told sorry don’t cover your area ( Bassetlaw ) saying here’s a number who may help, phoned the number and a young lad was as much use as a chocolate fire guard didn’t have a clue.
Not the best experience from Age UK.
Thanks for the reply and no I won’t be contacting you again as you couldn’t do much the first time around so my calculated guess is you’ll do even less this time, let’s hope no of your relatives ever need your advice.

Jigsaw puzzles boxes open

I went into the age uk charity shop in Boston Lincolnshire today as I love jigsaw puzzles. However, I found none of the boxes were taped up to keep them closed and I found one that was open so I tried to lift it up to close it. As I did this pieces fell out and went all over the floor. I pointed out to one of the ladies working there and she told me to put it aside and walked off! This does not give me confidence that puzzles bought from this shop will have all their pieces so I’ll steer clear. What a shame

Unhelpful

I rang the Northamptonshire branch and left a message to call back. No-one rang. This is not the first time with Age UK. One in Great Yarmouth called my mum a liar and was extremely rude. When you ring for advice, you’re directed to places on the website. Age Concern were so much better they actually spoke to you with information.

Hi Ms Davis, thank you for your message and we are very sorry that you were disappointed with the service you have received and for any upset this has caused. The local Age UK offices can take a few working days to respond to messages, due to time and staff restrictions, but we are sorry that you have not heard from them. As all local Age UK's are independent charities, they will need to be contacted directly, but if you would like me to do this for you, please would you mind emailing us at feedbackatageuk@ageuk.org.uk with your details, what help you are looking for and your permission to pass on your information and I will be happy to send this on to the office in Northampton and ask them to make contact with you as soon as possible. I received help from Age UK filling out an online form

I recently received help from Age UK, over the phone. They helped me complete an online application form for Attendance Allowance. The gentleman who helped me had endless patience with me, was caring regarding my needs and was extremely helpful. I cannot praise him enough. He even went back over all the questions to double-check that they were all answered correctly and that no vital information had been missed out. Thank you, Age UK.

I'm feeling really shaken up with the…

I'm feeling really shaken up with the staff from Age UK today

On Thurs 15 Feb at around 4.45pm, I visited Age UK Lumley Rd with my elderly dog, who has a terminal heart condition and travels in a buggy, and my registered support dog, clearly marked on her harness. As I was about to leave the shop, a female staff member approached aggressively, snatching a jumper out of the buggy that I had removed before entering the store because of a hot flush. I was embarrassed as the jumper was old, well-worn, and carried my odour.
The woman loudly shouted 'is that one of our dresses you have' she realised her mistake, tossed the jumper back into the buggy, muttering about missing dresses from rails. I was mortified and taken aback at how she grabbed my belongings, lack of apology for the misunderstanding and the way in which she had shouted.
I confronted her about the accusation of shoplifting, she again raised her voice, stating I was a shoplifter and claimed I had been in the shop a month ago stealing and she had witnesses. I began to get distressed telling her I live in a different town, not in Skegness, that I would have been working during the alleged incident and that I hadn't been in the store since August. She continued to insist on her false accusations mocking me stating “one month, more what's it matter” I asked for details of the supposed witnesses, dates, and evidence to substantiate her claims, and I also requested access to CCTV footage and her name. She refused to provide any information. She turned to her assistant and said isn't this the lady who stole from us?" The assistant replied 'I think so' I was getting more upset, shaking , telling them both, you can't 'think so' if you accuse someone you need facts. This us slander and you're telling lies. I told them I'm registered as blind, showed her my white cane pointing out I'd be a terrible shoplifter. I have a support dog and need help seeing. Despite this, she continued to mock and belittle me, laughed and said “ pft your dog is in a buggy.” I don't think she looked at the dog standing with a support harness on. I showed her the support registration card for my dog and told her you're rude and I want your name to complain. She refused to give it to me. I tried to read her work badge, I did and I apologise for touching the badge with my finger when trying to read it. I misjudged how far away she was from me. I see the world as a blur, it was a genuine mistake she screamed at the top of her voice in front of customers "you assaulted me, don't touch me, get your hands off me, repeatedly shouting you assaulted me that's assault" I told her I wanted her to call the police she mocked me again saying “you call the police.” saying she was leaving the shop.

I am deeply upset and humiliated by this experience. I love this town, and my family has been a part of its community for generations. She made me feel worthless like dirt with no dignity. I don't ever remember anyone in Skegness being so mean this is just not the loving people I know. A lovely lady stopped me outside. I was crying asking if I was ok and told me it was the manager of the shop who'd been rude. Whoever you are, thank you. it's left me very shaken and shocked I understand managers need to be careful and I understand anyone can make a mistake. I wish you'd spoken to me quietly and privately and acknowledge your mistake. I don't have a criminal record I have never stolen from age UK or anyone else i love going for a stroll, chatting to the staff of all the other charity shops who are absolutely lovely they make a fuss of the dogs, have giggles and send me home with a smile.

This is more a question to age uk

This is more a question to age uk, what happens to donations you have coming in? As i work in care industry and some elderly people that go to your care facilities have to pay at least £40 to attend for the day, how is that helping the elderly? That is more taking advantage, i have dbs checks to do my job maybe directors etc should be checked to as appear to be robbing the vunerable

You are campaigning for money for elderly but exploiting them by asking for in some cases their pension to attend groups. Your reply did not answer my questions

Dear Peggy, thank you for getting in touch.

I understand that it can sometimes be confusing to understand the structure of Age UK and I therefore feel it would be helpful for me to explain how we work. Here at Age UK, the national charity, we mainly work on providing high quality information and guidance through our national Advice Line, build valuable companionships through our Telephone Friendship services, as well as campaigning and researching for better health and wellbeing services for older people in England.

We also work in partnership with around 130 local Age UKs, which support older people in their communities with face-to-face services such as home support and wellbeing activities among many other programmes. Each local Age UK is responsible for their own management and day-to-day running, meaning that services may vary between each local partner.  Age UK, the national charity, shares a similar brand to all local Age UKs, but we are not a head office, or a governing body.

Their website for incontinence products…

Their website for incontinence products is confusing. It needs to be easier to order without making expensive and inconvenient mistakes. It may be automated as I was told but it still needs to be made less confusing. All I got when I complained about 7 mistakes costing me £300, was "sorry". I would guess that most of their customers are elderly and they should be able to order easily.
I could go on about my experiences with other AUK services but don't have the time or energy. Stars? They dont deserve even one!

Loneliness

I wanted to contact Age UK about a lonely lady in my town to see what they old recommend for her to meet others and broaden her contacts.

My local office (Devizes) does not accept drop in visitors so I had to call the national helpline who said they would arrange for someone in my area to ring me. After three days no call has been received. There is no way I can find to contact Age UK by email so I am stumped, and the lady is still lonely.

My first impressions of Age UK are that it is utterly shambolic.

I will try elsewhere.

what an absolutely appalling company

what an absolutely appalling company, they employed us without any work for us. my first pay was taken from my second pay, they took training off me, and I could actually teach them a thing or two. The communication is appalling, my manger said she was going to call me the next day, I was still waiting a week later.
my final pay had the training removed and dbs, no mention of the update service they made me pay for.
they sent me to a house where the client did not want me in, so I was constantly swore at. managers are no support.
I was told Elderly do not like early calls because they don't get up early, in all my years my experience is Elderly are up at crack of dawn, because the sleep very little at night and nap during the day..this company do not care about their staff or clients.....
do not use this company, there are many better, with more compassion
they have not paid me for my last clean and travel, absolute Rob dogs...
