Besides the filthy looks from the male personal trainers and the general passive aggressive attitude from the staff on the reception - the equipment is good enough with plenty of space to work even when busy. One thing that did bother me was I was told the boxing area was free to use for members and was rarely occupied but every time I go to use it there seems to be a class happening which isn’t even hosted by the gym so you can’t even work around their timetable.

I would like to raise a concern…

I would like to raise a concern regarding an incident that occurred today at the Underground Gym in Tunbridge Wells, and as I couldn’t find another way to communicate, I’ve decided to do it through a review.

First of all, I really love the club and all the trainers, who are always nice and good at what they do. However, as I was leaving the club today, the manager approached me to remind me that shoes should not be worn on the mat. I fully understand and respect this rule, and I have consistently followed it until today. I have no objection to being reminded about it. However, the manner in which the message was delivered was unnecessarily confrontational and made me feel as though I was being spoken to in a dismissive or patronising way.

When I mentioned that bacteria can also spread through bare feet or close contact, and that regular cleaning of the mats would be an additional precaution, the manager responded by insisting that I was incorrect and stating that the mats could not be cleaned after every class. This quickly escalated into an argument rather than a constructive conversation.

Upon reaching the entrance, I asked the team who she was, and I was told she is the manager. She immediately returned and continued to argue, insisting that she had not been rude to me earlier. The staff then reiterated the importance of following the rules, which, again, was never the issue for me. My concern was solely about the tone and attitude used in addressing me. A simple acknowledgement that there may have been a misunderstanding would have resolved the matter, but instead the conversation became unnecessarily adversarial. While I understand she may have been frustrated after repeating the same reminders throughout the day, it does not excuse addressing customers in a discourteous manner.

I believe that additional training in communication and customer interaction would be highly beneficial for the management team.

I have referred many people to this club, and I remain very satisfied with the Muay Thai classes and the Semtex team. However, today’s experience with the management team was disappointing, and I would encourage you to address this issue to ensure a more positive environment for members going forward.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Love this gym

Love this gym! Really well equipped with friendly, helpful staff. I’ve been going for over a year training with PT Livvy Fowler. As a more mature gym user I’ve had a few issues with injuries etc and Livvy is incredibly knowledgeable and knows how to get the best from me in training. Can’t recommend enough 😊

Portslade Gym

Portslade Gym. Incredibly rude and unwelcoming on reception. Was thinking about joining but not a chance. I asked if I could have a quick look around as I was doing yoga next door and was asked how I got in, when I said I’d used an open side door (which I assumed was fine to use as I’ve never been here before!) I was told it was sneaking in and to not to do it again! I left immediately. Don’t want to be part of a gym with an attitude like that.

Hello Kat,
We're sorry to hear about this. Our team are always here to help and support anyone who visits our facility, if they have not been absolutely professional and polite then we wholeheartedly apologise and will run through training with the individual involved. The reason we ask everyone to use our main entrance is for health and safety purposes but this should be communicated in a respectful way. We would be more than happy to rearrange another tour with our sales manager. If you'd like to take us up on this please email lacey@underground-gym.com. Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you'

They are THIEVES

They are THIEVES. Told Ben Dec I would try their gym on £20 deal but would not automatically sign up. He said yes. OK great. I paid £20 and then because of work and being ill end of Dec I never even went once. I sent email to Ben saying see his Jan offer £10 can I try that as im not a member. He knew I was not a member as we had agreed that. Said sure he will tell reception.

GUESS WHAT?

I checked my bank account in March to find out these s,lag's have been debiting my account for 3 months. When approached they said where's my proof I never wanted to join.

Will leave posters in Portslade saying this

Twells - much improved

*updated review - September 2024

1. Changing facilities
The men’s changing have been recently refurbished and so much better than they were previously. Few bits left to do but so much nicer than it was previously.

2. Staff training and Customer Care
Massive improvements here recently with the front of house staff being very helpful and attentive to members. Shout out to Livy and Zoe 👍🏼

3. Parking

Can be tight but much improved.

4. Equipment

Some new equipment and weights recently, with older pads being replaced which makes a big difference.

5. Entrance App
Seems to be working now and no issues of late.

6. Communication
Has improved but could still be better. Maybe a monthly news letter to members updating members on progress, activity, classes and offers.

Compared to 6 months ago, it has improved dramatically with investment in facilities and equipment. Updated from 2 Star, to a 4 ⭐️

Hi Paul,
Firstly thanks for leaving the review, it is really important for us as a business to hear from members as to what we are doing right and what we are doing wrong.
I’m sure you are aware that we have gone through a a couple of different managers at TW now and finally have someone in who is passionate and really wants to drive the club forward in the right direction and bring that real Underground Gym vibe back to TW.
Perry has been with us for a couple of months now and we are already seeing huge improvements and changes.
When you are next in the club make sure to grab him and have a chat with him, he’s a great lad and a passionate leader.
Let me tackle your points 1 by 1.

1.Changing Rooms
These are all easy fixes and we have have a plumber coming in to sort all of these very shortly.
Perry had a big task list together through to get things back on an even keel and this was on it however, eluding to another of your points, the fact that they were on the list wasn’t clearly communicated enough.
But rest assured, having a shower will be a joy and visiting the toilets will be a calm affair:)

2.Customer Care
As alluded to above, the site hasn’t been best managed previously and this has led to staff disengagement, Perry has changed all that and the staff have fully bought into the gym and the amazing community we have there. I believe this is a historic issue now however if you have a bad interaction with a staff member then make sure to speak to Perry who will make sure things are put right.
We pride ourselves on community and atmosphere, and that starts with the staff so it is important that they have full buy-in to who we are.

3.Parking
I 100% agree that staff and PTs should not park in the car park, Perry will reconfirm this with all staff.
On the notes, I imagine this is regarding the disabled bay, it is important that this is kept clear for those members who need it hence why the staff may leave notes on cars parked there that maybe shouldn’t.
There is of course ample parking on road as well so you should never have a problem however Perry will make sure that the UG car park is for members only (it should always have been but again, probably not managed the best previously).

4.Equipment
As you know we have a lot of equipment in the gym and we keep on adding to it. You would have noticed the new calibrated plates, the new weight plates for the gym floor, the T-bar row, the new Hyrox area out the back, and the new weights and squat rack in the studio to facilitate women’s only classes as well as the huge range of new classes that we are now offering.
It is important that all of that kit is well maintained and with the new management this is top priority.

5.Entrance App
This has been an issue for all of our sites for some time now but we believe that it is at last fixed. There were 3 parties all pointing there fingers at each other around why it was not working as it should be but we believe the fix is now working at TW and will be rolled out at our other sites now as well.
We share your frustration in this but thankfully it is now in the past!

6.Random Charges
These shouldn’t happen so please, if this happens, maybe due to human error initially, notify management asap who can escalate to me or the accounts team if necessary where we will resolve straight away.

7.I completely agree. It is important that we listen to people but also that we keep people in the loop about what is going on with certain situations and we can always do better with this. Even something as simple as a nod and a “I’ll be with you in 2 seconds” when a staff member is busy dealing with something and you are waiting at reception makes all the difference.

Thanks for all your feedback Paul, and as you can see from the above, we have actioned or are actioning all of it.
As I mentioned before, Perry is a great guy, make sure to grab him next time you’re in the gym and any issues moving forward he’s your man.

All the best,
Alan (Owner)

Awful awful place…

This gym has been spiralling downhill for a while now. Equipment is outdated and constantly broken, roof is crumbling to the point I’ve actually had small bits of concrete falling In front of me when exercising. Men’s toilets are constantly out of bounds and there is dirty water spewing from under the gym mats because of a plumbing issue which they haven’t fixed for months now. They haven’t reinvested in any strength equipment in the 4 years I’ve been a member despite charging everyone an extra tenner in June each year for ‘upgrading equipment’. They’ve increased their prices in a cost of living crisis while not providing a better value service. Honestly would give this place zero stars if I was possible, the lack of care from the staff and management is ridiculous. Real shame

Hi Joe,
Thanks for your feedback.
As owners who are very close to the business we constantly reinvest in the business as I’m sure you can see by the ongoing improvements throughout the site such as:
- The raft of new treadmills we introduced recently
- The money spent on improving the metcon/powerlifting area
- The purchase of 15+ spin bikes to facilitate more cardio for people and classes
- The new astroturf that is waiting in the corner of the gym to be laid in the next week or so
- The addition of new classes that have absolutely gone off
- we are also looking at our usual larger round of investment in the next couple of months so watch this space

On your other points:
- We are a buzzing, community based gym with an amazing atmosphere. This means equipment gets used a lot which we love but it means that some pieces of equipment breakdown as is only natural, it happens at every gym. We have repair people on site every week to do repairs which is way above industry standard. We also have our own staff who can do minor repairs.
- We are also training up our maintenance person to repair cables instantly as these tend to be the most used piece of kit and so the thing that breaks and impacts the club the most. So repairs for this should happen within hours or a day very shortly.
- And finally your point on the male changing rooms, we unfortunately have a member who is sabotaging the changing rooms weekly by damaging the underneath of the sink or the toilet cisterns so that they flood, I’m surprised you have not seen the signs about this. We are going to catch the person but in the meantime you will have to bear with us while we deal with this vandalism. The person and all the evidence will be handed to police once we have finished building the case.

Your final comments on lack of care from staff and management I completely refute. Our staff are amazing and do a brilliant job creating an atmosphere second to none where 99% of members are very happy with what we do.

And on the headline ‘awful awful place’, nobody, unless they had an axe to grind, whether Underground Gym is their cup of tea or not, would ever walk through the doors and think ‘awful awful place’.

Best of luck with your training moving forward
Alan (Owner)

It used to be a really great place to…

It used to be a really great place to train, unfortunately over time the equipment has been getting worse and worse, nothing seems to get replaced, membership price has jumped up and now they have jumped on the profiteering bandwagon by putting up all the prices of products. No care for members anymore.

The gym itself is just amazing as you have so much space aswell as a huge selection of equipment from free weights, fixed machines, lifting platform and a HIIT training area. Fantastic gym with amazing facilities!

Absolutely love training at Underground Gym! Their range of equipment is huge, and it's all top-quality stuff. Their equipment and facilities cover a huge range of different disciplines too, so whether I'm looking for a bit more of a strength-focused session, or leaning more towards a bit more isolation, Underground Gym has everything to keep me covered regardless of what my ever-changing goals are!

They've got a fantastic range of classes and other facilities and equipment for things like boxing and calisthenics available as well, and every member of staff that I've had the pleasure of talking to is a credit to the gym - they're always so friendly, helpful and welcoming!

Can't recommend Underground Gym enough, one of the best places I've ever trained.

Best gym in the South by FAR!

If you are in the Kent area our even just visiting and need a facility to train at - Underground Gym Tunbridge Wells is the ONE. Apart from the sheer scale of the place (it's huge) they seem to have every bit of equipment you could want - and some! I've never seen a gym that also houses a boxing ring, a cage and matting for BJJ too. Not to mention more dumbbells and benches than you could ever need. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, the vibe is spot on and the price is such good value. Well worth a visit.
