I echo what many others have said: TopCar is utterly unprofessional. Credit where it's due — one staff member was genuinely helpful and tried his best. Unfortunately, he appears to be the exception.
Deposit issues. I paid a 1,200 EUR deposit and received roughly less back. Apparently some bank conversion fee? Nobody could clearly explain why I didn't get my full amount back. It seems they may charge the deposit instead of simply holding it, as others have reported.
The tire & insurance nightmare. I purchased insurance that covered car's related problems. During the rental period, I noticed a screw in the tire. Per their contract, you're not allowed to fix anything yourself — not even something as simple as visiting a tire shop. Instead, they send a replacement vehicle, which of course isn't free. Fine — I followed the rules. I received a damage report and two receipts. Then my insurance company asked for a final invoice, and that's where the real circus began.
Four weeks of runaround. I have two contacts at TopCar. One either ignores me or responds with complete nonsense. The other simply doesn't reply. My request could not be simpler: send me the final invoice for the insurance company, tha's all. They promised in the office it would be no problem. Four weeks later — still nothing. When I asked for a direct contact of someone who could actually issue this document, they sent me a screenshot of their website's contact page and told me there's an email and phone number there. Spoiler: there is no email on that page, and the phone number doesn't work from roaming — or at all, for that matter.
My suspicion. Honestly, I don't believe they're capable of producing a proper final invoice. I suspect the amounts wouldn't hold up to scrutiny from an insurance company, and they know it.
Bottom line. I don't enjoy writing negative reviews. But if a company can't send a simple invoice over four weeks despite repeated promises, I feel obligated to warn fellow travelers: don't waste your time or money here.
Edu was extremely helpful. He got us a car the day of and gave some really good recommendations. Would rent here again!

I just had the worst experience at the top car Lanzarote airport. We queued for 1.5 hours, we were next in line and they told us they were closing the line and moved us around the other side to a new longer line. Not only was this deeply upsetting for me and my young children but they then continued to serve the original line so the all people who had been behind me got served and left. The people who had moved lines then complained and they wouldn’t do anything about it. Causing the people in the line to all start fighting. It took 2 hours to get to the desk. I will never book top car again. Terrible terrible terrible customer service and experience

Rented a car on Gran Canaria at a very low price. Was a high deposit but it was payed back a few days after I returned the car. Everything went smooth, friendly and helpful staff, no waiting time, car was as i expected.

We were missold car rental insurance. We have an annual policy to cover car rentals. Tried to explain this to the member of staff. He led us to believe we had to take it out.
I have complained and asked for our money back. The Company has not responded in a helpful way. They say it was a matter of a mis-communication. Surely they should have staff who can communicate properlywith the customers?
Absolutely horrendous scam company that doesn’t care a single bit. They will charge you 1200€ as deposit which is huge sting already. After I got returned 1090€ so 110€ less from deposit due to conversions, as they charge your card instead of putting it on hold. No notice, nothing, so paid more for this than for the whole renting itself. Never again, cutting this amateurs for life, So Beware all - NEVER rent with a Topcar!!
Use other options.

I see it has mixed reviews. But just wanted to add mine saying that rented about 4-5 times in tenerife and never had any problem. Really feel that they can be trusted.

Car hire was going smooth, car was not dirty or smelly. Easy early morning return. Just as we expected!
No problems with car, it was clean and in perfect condition. When we returned home we were charged £70 for exchange rate and fees when the deposit of 1200 Euros was returned to our Credit Card. It was not put on hold like other companies. So as well as the Hire Car cost this was another expense we did not expect. Very expensive car hire!! Would not hire from this company again.

I am writing this review because I am very disappointed with my experience with TopCar Tenerife.
After returning the rental car, I was supposed to receive back my €200 deposit, but it has still not been refunded. It has now been quite some time, and I have not received any update or explanation.
I have also tried several times to contact the company to clarify the situation, but unfortunately I have not been able to get in touch with anyone or receive a response.
I believe this situation is not acceptable. The deposit should be returned promptly if there are no damages or issues with the vehicle. I hope this matter can be resolved as soon as possible.
Until then, I cannot recommend this company based on my experience.

Accidentally booked Goldcar instead of Topcar for my father (booked Topcar for myself), on booking.com, knowing that Goldcar are scammers. Cost for the car was the same on booking. Topcar asked 50EUR for full insurance with no deposit. Goldcar asked 243EUR + 133EUR fuel deposit. at the desk, they basically blackmailed us to buy the full insurance. said that even the minor 0.5mm paint scratch will cost 500EUR+, giving some sort of brochure stating that. They also tried the usual tactics saying that all of our 5 cards are debit or does not have the name on it, even though one was a credit card, and that we won't get the car if we won't buy the extra insurance, which costs 2x the car price. Topcar gave us shining and clean VW Golf 8, Goldcar gave old and bruised VW Taigo. Avoid Goldcar at all costs! Topcar is the way to go.
Warning! Overcharged and charged for pre-existing damage.
I was charged 1200€ for a small scratch, even though I signed a damage report for 220€. This is a clear overcharge and breach of contract. Furthermore, I have timestamped photo evidence proving the damage was already there at pick-up. Customer service (Heidi) refused to help and ignored the fact that my phone was on a different time zone (GMT+2 vs GMT+0), claiming the photos were taken too late.
Unprofessional and dishonest. I have initiated a chargeback through my bank. Avoid this company!
Edit: I get security deposit 980 € back, but they took 220€ and it wasn't my accident. It takes months to get any answers. I don't trust them anymore.

Do not book. Hired from Tenerife, pick up desk is right next to Cicar, where the queue moved swiftly along. I read several placards as I proceeded forward at a glacial pace, suggesting I speed things up by checking in online, I wondered what would actually be quicker, as everyone in the long queue seemingly had checked in already. If you don’t take their insurance you’ll be punished with a 1200 euro credit card charge. They don’t refund it until they choose to, which may be several weeks. They don’t acknowledge receipt of an undamaged vehicle, so you might get your 1200 back, or you might not…
DONT BOOK HERE! If you do not take their insurance they will charge 1200 euro on your card (not a hold but an actual charge). I'm still to get my money back. Pickup took over an hour and a contract was not provided. Their emergency assistance number was not reachable for a full day.

Review of TopCar – Fuerteventura Airport
This experience was so substandard that it feels more like a public service announcement than a review.
We arrived at Fuerteventura Airport and waited two hours in a queue just to reach the check-in desk. When we finally got there, we were told we had to take an additional £49 insurance, which felt far from optional.
The check-in process itself then took another 30 minutes, largely due to the company being clearly and severely understaffed. By the time we were handed the keys, we were told to head to the pickup area where the car was supposedly ready.
After approximately 2.5 hours at the airport, we reached the pickup area — only to be told the car wasn’t ready at all and was still in the cleaning bay. When I asked how long it would take, I was told they had no idea — it could be 10 minutes or an hour.
I expressed my frustration at this point, having already spent hours waiting. The staff member’s response was shocking: he told me to leave a bad review because his boss “doesn’t care and is drinking cocktails in Miami.”
Around 45 minutes later, the car finally arrived — but only after I reminded them that we were still waiting, as they had seemingly forgotten about us.
When we got into the vehicle, the fuel gauge showed zero miles remaining, which immediately put us in a panic trying to locate a petrol station. To make matters worse, we were given no information whatsoever about how or where to return the car at the end of the hire period — we had to search online ourselves.
I have given one star purely because zero isn’t an option.
I would strongly advise others to avoid TopCar"
This was some else post but our experience was the same. Canel if you have booked with them. I have just cancelled another car we had booked with them based on the reviews.
They do not have enough staff and NEVER again will I use them Please cancel otherwise you will be sorry.
Our car was OK but it was old and badly in need of a service but they do not care
I got my money back but lost on the exchange rates as they charge it no hold. They are a wholly disreputable company
I sooo regret not readings reviews before booking with these scammers.
First: waited for nearly 2 hours! at fuerteventura airport when all documents were filled and paid at the time of booking.
Second: we could not find the car as it was nowhere near where they told us. Staff had to find it.
Third: as soon engine was started oíl sign came on. Asked staff and answer was " oíl has been change within the right time frame, it will be fine"..even when I argued back that it could be a leak?
Fourth: next morning checked manually oíl level; oíl level undetectable. After several calls , were told to wait where we were, and a replacement car would be sent.
Over 3 hours! later, and numerous calls replacement car arrived. No apology at any stage when one day of our hol out of six was completely ruined, with a problem already detected at the time of collection.
Fith: replacement car had bold tyres, absolutely ilegal to be on the road.
Sixth: i was unexpectely CHARGED - not retain-900 euros deposit (uk credit card) which it took 8 days to be refunded , only to found out that 60 pounds were robbed on the conversions/transactions/whatever rubbish they are trying to convince me with, that I signed for knowing in advance.
Customer service is appauling.
Been renting cars for nearly 30 years and never have had such a disgraceful experience till now. Ruined my holiday.
The car we hire actually ran quite well, but we did take photos of the bashes and scrapes on the vehicle before driving it away. However, our week holiday was blighted by rain and that's when I noticed that the two front tyres were bald.

The hire car part was fine although the car hadn’t been cleaned. It’s the financial part that puts me off using them again. They insist on taking a credit card deposit of 900 euros which is actually normal but what sets them apart is rather than just putting a hold on the account they take the money. It’s takes them seconds to take but weeks to return and I’ve not had mine back yet. Worse than that they insist on a credit card rather than debit card so by the time the interest is added and the conversion for taking and refunding the cost is actually about £75 more than expected. There is no reason they can’t put a hold on other than it’s more profitable for them not to. I won’t be using again.
Queued for ages (approx 2 hours) then unable to collect car as < than 3 years driving experience which was not clearly stated on booking.com. Really bad experience.
Do not use! Extremely long wait of 3 hours at Fuerteventura airport.
One person at the desk taking 15 minutes to deal with each customer, even though most (myself included) had filled in the pre booking form with all relevant details.
Part way through the wait, the clerk left the desk to go to the shop, walking slowly back on their phone!
Once at the desk they did not have the car I had booked, trying to say they were giving me a free upgrade, which was not the case!
Once I left the airport desk to go to top office I was then advised my car wasn’t ready, even though it was 3 hours after we should have picked up the car! We then waited a further 20 minutes.
Almost 4 hours after joining the queue we finally left for our destination, with one very distressed and bored baby !
Will never ever use again or recommend to anyone.
