Very poor shade material threading with rapid deterioration

We have several of these Toja grid kits set up in our backyard in Southern California. The 4x4 structures have worked well. However, all of the shade stitching has been deteriorated year by year after only three years after installation. I’ve had to add rivet reinforcements to each and every seam connection. Very poor use of non weather resistant threads on all of shade material.

Quality of brackets is great

Quality of brackets is great . As long as you follow codes and use the brackets the way they are meant to be used, you will have an amazing experience. I built a double pergola kit 12x16. With rafters and even installed a tinted corrugated roof. Looks amazing, sturdy as can be and finally I get to enjoy my patio in the Texas sun! Thanks Toja!!

Bad Customer Service

Giving a bad review for their customer service. I ordered brackets needed as we changed the layout from the original plan I had a year ago. We received a notification when the package will arrive so we prepped everything and started assembling the pergola knowing it will be completed once the last pieces are received. UPS delivered packages so we continued installing to find out we are missing a set of brackets from that order. We thought UPS didn’t deliver all of it but it turned out to be Toja warehouse. I was hoping they will expedite the shipping knowing it was their fault they didn’t deliver to us what we ordered. We have partially installed pergola sitting for a whole freaking week. We couldn’t secure the bases because we need to make sure everything is plum once all pieces are put in.

Despite our best efforts at times picking/packing errors do occur. When this happens we make every effort to get this corrected as soon as possible. Our standard shipping method is UPS Ground and we have to account for processing time. I do apologize the error occurred and it caused a delay in build, but I can assure you our customer service team actioned the resolution as soon as they were notified. Thank you for your continued patience.

Shade sail stitches come apart

Let me start off by saying, I love my Toja pergola and would give the metal components 5 stars. But the shade sail needs better stitching. The sail itself holds up but the stitching barely withstood 2 years of use. And that’s with taking it down in late fall and putting it back in early spring as well as when there’s high wind.

They do have a great warranty which I took advantage of (super easy and great customer service) but the stitching on the replacements are now starting to fray too. It’s not just where the reinforced triangle where the buckles are, it’s also the stitching all along the edges too. In some sections it’s come apart completely.

I just don’t think the sail is made to withstand the sun and summers in Southern California.

Hi,

If you live in a windier area that could also be creating an issue and putting too much stress on the strapping areas. We do recommend removing SHADE SAILs in winds of 50km/30mph+. If in a windier area and still wanting shade it might be better to look at the Wave Shades as these do not need to come down in winds as the rafters they are woven through help to stabilize them in place. I am sorry you have been having trouble with your shades. Please reach out to the team if you have any further questions.

I rarely if ever write reviews…

I rarely if ever write reviews especially negative ones. I had a Toga Grid installed at my condominium two and a half years ago in Toronto. I live on the top floor and there is no roof above me so there is a fair bit of exposure. I noticed that two of my neighbours (next door and directly below me) had this system. I opted for a top pergola and a vertical privacy sail. This was initially installed by a local handyman. I paid him a set price and he bought all of the materials from Home Depot. Unfortunately I did not get the purchase receipts of the Toga Grid from the installer which is my mistake.

Very early on I noticed that the webbing that attaches to the buckles on the vertical sail seemed to be wearing at the point of attachment to the metal sail mounts. I have wrapped the problematic ones with Gorilla tape. Upon recently reinstalling the vertical sail I noticed that the lower right hand webbing was frayed almost to the point of being in two pieces. I rigged up a repair with some Gorilla tape and adhesive. I contacted Toga Grid specifically asking them for some instructions and advice on how to repair the nylon webbing. I did state that I did not have any receipts and I provided photos of the problematic areas.

Their reply was that the best they could do was give me 25% off of a new sail and I needed to do so within two days. The advisor seemed to take a distinctively condensing tone in the reply to me. Yes, I do know how to store the sail. Yes, I try to take it down in high wind conditions. DO NOT (sic) use your shade above or around any sources of heat or open flame. Really? I would have never guessed this. Forgive my sarcasm to the last bit of advice from Toga Grid. I just find this so insulting.

25% off of an expensive item still makes it expensive. The 8x10 size (the one I would need) retails for $280 CDN exclusive of the taxes and shipping. At no point in my correspondence with Toga Grid was my initial request for advice and assistance in obtaining a repair to the torn nylon webbing ever addressed.

The offer to replace the sail (albeit at a discounted amount) begs the question: why is this design with the buckles and webbing so prone to breaking? This seems to be a very common observation and complaint. What is the point of replacing the sail only to have this happen again? As mentioned, other reviewers have noted that the wear and ultimate tearing of nylon webbing is a glaring fault and defect in this product. Why is the nylon webbing not designed to handle the inevitable forces (wind, sun, rain) that will lead to breakdown of the webbing at the metal contact points of the sail mounts?

I would not recommend this product given my experience.

Hi Lawrence as explained in our email exchange we do have a 2 year limited manufacturers warranty on our SHADE SAILs. As with all warranty claims in order to use them the claim must have the original proof of purchase available. We do not typically recommend customers go down the path of repair as it is our experience the cost to repair to the customer is often more than the cost to just replace the shades.

We provide information throughout the site on caring for your shades including taking them down in high winds, etc. The information we provide on caring for them is not meant to insult anyone and is actually based on real issues customers have had. Please remember what may be obvious to one is not always to another, so we try to ensure we provide all the information so customers are armed and educated. We do have other options available for customers who live in windier areas. If a customer is unsure they can always reach out to our team and we are happy to help guide them.

All of our brackets are made in Canada using 12 and 14 gauge steel (depending on the bracket). They have deep cavities allowing for better lumber support for your build. They are treated and coated to protect from the elements year round.

Poor clips and straps

Poor clips and straps. The straps holding the shade get ripped easily with the wind. Even the plastic clips they use are not good quality and completely break apart. It's only the second season and multiple straps ripped and clips broke. I have 3 shades and there's the same problem with all of them. The clips are a specific model. I tried to buy some online of 1 inch but they don't fit the original piece. I already spent hundreds of dollars solidifying the straps and repairing the ones that ripped off. The same problem happens over and over again. Very disappointed

To reply to their comment : The shades were always removed before winter and were properly stored. The windspeed in Montreal is usually far below 30km/h. We are not a city know for storms or high wind speed. Even though you sell clips on the Toja website, this doesn't change any of the inconvenience to replace a part. The broken female part has to be removed and this implies unstiching the clip from the strap, changing it and restiching the new clip to the strap so it can be functional.

Hi Kevin,

We recommend removing your SHADE SAILs in winds of 50km/30mph+, bad storms and winter months (where applicable).

Before storing for the off season wash your shade using a mild detergent and soft brush, rinse and allow to dry. If storing inside the home including a finished basement a storage bag is usually sufficient. However, if storing in a garage, shed or unfinished basement we recommend storing in an air tight container to keep out moisture, bugs and other critters.

DO NOT use your shade above or around any sources of heat or open flame.

We do have buckles available on our website for purchase as replacements.

Not as Advertised

Definately was not as durable as they claim, also they have only "five-star" reviews posted on their site. Furthermore, they do not have an option to post any review on their site, aside from their cherry-picked reviews. Very shady, and unprofessional.

Expensive, poor quality, poor customer service

They look good but you are paying for the look only. The high price does not mean better quality. The umbrella top fittings bend in a breeze just like a basic pop up tent.
In addition I was sold items that were not compatible (not stated on the website), the company is not fixing the issue on their website and insisting that the return cost is my responsibility.

Hi J Kelly,
We are sorry you are not satisfied. The umbrellas do come with a 1 year manufacturers warranty with proof of purchase. If you are within the 1 year and would like to look into a warranty claim on the umbrella please reach out and we would be happy to help. We offer a 14 day return policy from the date of receipt for full refund and free returns outside of this the customer is responsible for the return shipping fees, but we arrange the return labels and with our rates the return fee is usually minimal for items you would like to return.

These brackets are a joke and unsafe

These brackets are a joke and unsafe. We followed the instructions to build a pergola and as we lifted to install the last posts the welds failed and buckled. After reaching out to the manufacturer they completely denied any failure of the welds and blamed it on “trauma” from the build. I would not recommend this product due to the hazards of cheap built metal brackets and unsafe instructions to build these systems. I have reached out to BBB and OSHA to have these systems reviewed as they are being installed by contractors.

Hi Chad,
Based on the information and images provided the wrong type of lumber was used for the brackets you purchased. You used rough/true lumber instead of the dressed with rounded corners required for our standard brackets. Using the incorrect lumber will put too much stress/strain on the brackets as well as making install more difficult. The images you shared showed very clear trauma to the bracket caused by install. We have also reached out to the dealer you purchased from to provide them a refresh on our system and the lumber required. Our brackets have been engineer tested for weight load capacity per cavity and shear, which we share on our website. We also provide lots of information about our system, the lumber required, instructions for most kits and have some great videos for customers to review as well. We do warranty our brackets under a 5 year limited warranty for manufacturers defects. We do not warranty products used outside of recommended purpose/scope, with lumber or other products not recommended or sold by us. Our 6x6 brackets are made in Canada using North American 12 or 14 gauge (depending on the bracket) steel.

Love almost all of Toja! Sunshade is a problem

For the most part I absolutely love my Toja Grid pergola and sunshade area that I built. Brackets, footings, and all are made solid and should hold up for a long time. Easily the coolest spot in my backyard. Unfortunately, the sunshade is not made well. The material is fantastic, but the straps are sewn on and not very well. Thats why they only warranty it for 2 years. They absolutely know that after not too long there is no way it holds up. And I put the shade away nicely in its own bin in my garage for the winter. For 3k in materials (that's just Toja not including wood) the sunshade should be made better. Testing out a different manufacturer and I will certainly post if it's better for all to buy and skip on Toja sunshade until they make it better. Don't waste your money! They are not cheap for only lasting 2 years. Otherwise, Toja Grid has been wonderful.

Hi Mikey,
We have always offered a 2-year limited manufacturers warranty for the SHADE SAILs. Many have had their shades for several years without issue, but occasionally like with any product there are some that for whatever reason do not seem to last as long. I have personally had my Shade Sail going on 4 years without issue to the straps of buckles, but I know this is not the case for everyone. We do recommend removing shades in winds of 50km/30mph, bad storms and winter months. We also recommend never having your shade over or around any source of heat or open flame. When storing for the winter months, we recommend cleaning the shade and letting it fully dry. Then store in a storage bag in your home or an air tight container to keep out moisture and critters in your garage or shed. These things will help prolong the life of your shade.

Customer service is ... meh.

Wanted exact dimensions of a shade sail, for a different structure than their grid. Given the runaround by their customer service, "they are 2-3 inches shorter on the perimeter". No one was willing to get up, find a tape measure, and give me measurements. Unhelpful. Makes me wary of their customer service in general.

Hi Laurence,
As noted in our email exchange, the SHADE SAILs are made to use with our structures and the size provided is based on the inside dimensions of your pergola (inside post to inside post). There is an allowable variance of 2-3" off each side (ex. 8x10 may measure 6x8 or 5x7 when laid flat, etc.) as the fabric stretches and you want a taught fit with allowance for stretch over time. The straps will extend up to 7 inches, but we do not recommend as it can put too much strain on the straps.

Their sails are terrible

Their sails are terrible. The hanging ropes are of extremely poor quality and they wont honor their warranty. The worse customer service I have ever received from a company, and the lady was so rude. Not even willing to find a solution, just straight up tells you to go F yourself.

Would never recommend this company. If you buy, it's at your own risks.

Hi Pierre Amar,

We do stand behind our warranties. The SHADE SAILs have a 2 year limited manufacturers warranty, with proof of purchase and if the damage is noted as under the warranty we replace no problem. If it is just the clips that are broken we often replace those without question. I am not sure of your situation I did try and search your name to pull up correspondence, but could not find under this name. Please reach out to our customer service with the order information and we will review.

Precision fit, modern clean styling, solid.

We designed a coyote-safe outdoor cat garden to allow our cats to roam freely in a secure environment. We used 4x4 Toja Grid brackets to build a beautiful, rambling structure that supports high perches and strong leaping ledges. The 4x4 beams, side rails and posts provide stability for double-wall coyote fencing and human walk-in doorways. Now the cats have a wild garden inside their coyote-safe pergola, and we enjoy lounging with the cats inside the beauty of the modern Toja Grid structure. I am impressed by the bracket system’s functionality and design. Wild animal specialists have given a thumbs up on the structure. We built the structure with only two people, accommodating existing landscape and utility features. We added-on chambers as the project developed. Toja Grid product selection, availability, accurate and timely communications, and rapid shipping allowed us to expand our project into a truly remarkable and beautiful part of our home and garden.
