Step change have been brilliant. Slight hiccup with figures when I started but all sorted.
It has made things so much easier and took away so much anxiety about debt. So easy to update if things change

It’s been 5 weeks since I started the process towards a DMP and StepChange have done nothing. I’m now looking to contact their sponsors to see what they say about all this firstly the Money Advice Trust who fund this organisation. I’m not one bit happy and they keep saying the same old thing, well will contact you, we will call you etc etc it’s all baloney nothing happens a complete waste of time, how can they put advertising on the tv saying they help when none of them have done anything for me when I’ve followed every step correctly all the way. Just a real horrible horrible experience I do not recommend anybody starts the DMP process just trust me it’s all talk and no action!

Step Change -the Turning point

At the time of approaching Step change I had reached an all time low, I had lost the roof over my head , I was thousands of pound in debt ,and my mental health had gone through the Floor. I arrived at my parents house undernourished , On the verge of losing my job and deeply ashamed . I was in my late 30's and desperately needed the help I should have sought sooner. All I had left of my life were a number of black Bin bags one of which was filled with unopened letters , unpaid bills and court summons. After a month of my father going through all this documentation , he was able to establish that I was almost £15000 in debt. this was after he had contacted each creditor and also the courts. The sad thing was this wasn't the first time , The last time was a similar amount on that occasion my parents bailed me out , I should add I paid them every penny back. However this time understandably the refused to do it again . Eventually my father came up with step change , he explained that it was a charitable organisation that did not charge for its services , unlike others that I had contacted in the past. When I contacted step change they informed me that I had to declare all my debts as well as a budget for myself for me to carry on with my life going forward. Once they had this information they asked me what my income was from work . I was then presented with a DMP ( Debt management plan ) I read through it and realised that I could manage what they proposed over a 3 year period , I was also asked to include a small amount for saving which I did. I was then told that they would contact all my creditors and submit to each of them details of the plan , this meant all the letters would stop and Step change would make the payments , all I had to do was agree to the one single payment to step change each month, to cover the debt management plan set out for me. And live with the budget I had set for myself. It was from this point I was able to breath again ...my debts were being managed and I still had something to live off . All I had to do now was keep Step change informed if my circumstances changed in any way. After the first year
I was contacted by step change to review my circumstances , as I had received a pay rise I was able to increase the amount I paid in my plan . By the second year I found that with what money I had set aside for savings I was able to skip the 2nd review and actually pay off the remainder of my debt. I must admit it was through my father I was able to stick to the plan and actually pay it off early. I don't have savings any more but I am debt free , All I need to do now is save the money I was paying to step change in month and carry on rebuilding my life again. DEBT FREE . Thanks to step change

Life-changing support during a very difficult time

I can’t thank DebtChange enough for the support they gave me during one of the most difficult periods of my life. I was dealing with overwhelming debt and felt completely stuck, with no clear way forward.

From the very beginning, their team treated me with respect, understanding, and zero judgment. They took the time to fully understand my situation and explained my options clearly, which immediately helped reduce a lot of the stress and uncertainty I was feeling.

What really stood out was how supportive and professional they were throughout the entire process. They helped me put a realistic plan in place and guided me step by step, always making sure I felt informed and in control.

Thanks to their help, I’ve been able to regain stability and start moving forward again. I genuinely don’t think I could have done this on my own.

I would highly recommend DebtChange to anyone struggling with debt — they truly make a difference.

Reply from StepChange Debt Charity

Hi Dean,

We're sorry about your experience here.

Because we are a charity regulated by the FCA, we have to make absolutely sure a debt solution is right before we recommend it. If we genuinely felt, based on the info we have, that a DRO was a good way to deal with your debts, we would have recommended it.

If you feel like we've missed something, or there is some info we don't have, please get in touch with us so we can look into it and clarify our recommendation.

Best wishes,
Michael from StepChange

Stepchange are a great charity that have helped me become debt free of £19,000. I’ve only paid monthly what I could afford. If one month I was struggling they would pause the payment. My balance of over £3k was reduced to £1500 which allowed early settlement. 100% recommend.

Voluntary Arrangements

I went into a DMP due to debt that I could not manage a few years back - I have ended going into an IVA due to debt that was created by stress at a time when my daughter was hospitalised and we’d just moved into an inhabitable home.

Charlotte at StepChange has been more than wonderful and I could not fault the process or the practitioners at any point. They listened to me cry, get stressed and confused and took it on their chin and allowed me to be all 3. I hope this can be the start of a fresh start for me and my children. True life savers

A way forward…

The initial assurance of a way forward out of debt; the helpfulness of the staff who were always kind, always understanding and never made you feel a failure for being in debt. The fact that StC is recognised and respected by financial institutions which makes the journey less onerous.

Contacting StepChange was possibly the best thing I could have done and three years later I am making my last payment. From day 1 the customer service has been outstanding and completely non judgemental which was such a relief after struggling financially for such a long time. The process of setting up the plan was easy and quick and one monthly payment to StepChange each month relieved a lot of stress and anxiety. I would recommend this service unreservedly. Now I can start a fresh, debt free life! Thank you StepChange
