The staff was nice

The staff was great. The checkin experience was terrible. Even though I paid extra for an early check-in to ensure I didn't have to wait for the rush, it still took over 2 hours. During the checkin process of the 1st vehicle, we didnt have any of the bedding or the car seat, which we paid for. After we finally got our 1st vehicle, I noticed an error on the refrigerator which the staff didn't catch. They then played around with it trying to fix it for the next 45 minutes and then finally gave us another van which was just returned and not cleaned. Instead of giving us the many similar vehicles already in the lot, they decided to give us one that was returned which they obviously took another 30 ninutes to clean. After taking over 2 hours to get us out of the lot, all I got was a "thank you for being patient" instead of looking at how to reward/reimburse us for the extra we paid. Being there with an 18 month old is not fun. Our whole 1st day was just ruined because we didn't have time to get to where we were supposed to be.

The only reason for the 3 stars is because it was a memorable trip with my family.

The staff is nice and friendly and I have nothing against them.

Good but....

Van was great though with a few things that diudn't work properly.
The Help Centre online is in German which doesn't help.
Check-in and return - staff very friendly and helpful, but we left something of value on the van or on the forecourt.
There is no means by which to contact the depot other than by the contact form which when submitted provides a response in German. Doh. Translating that says they are very busy and will process when they can.

Dear roadsurfer customer service,

Dear roadsurfer customer service,

I rented this past weekend from the los angeles location to go to Coachella.
Overall it was actually a really fun experience and something I’d definitely do again. Driving it wasn’t as bad as I thought, and once we got set up it basically felt like a small apartment.

The only stressful part was right at the beginning — my pickup got delayed as the vehicle wasn't ready.
I then got on the freeway and noticed one of the tire lights came on almost immediately and the tire was dropping air pressure fast, so I had to turn around and go back. Turns out there was a nail in the tire, so the station made me take the vehicle to a tire shop. The tire had to be swapped before we could even head out of Hawthorne. That ended up delaying the whole trip. Considering I paid for a 1pm pickup and didn't even have the vehicle in an acceptable and safe condition until after 4pm that is pretty disappointing. Since we had coachella tickets we missed parts of the performances on Friday due to this delay considering we weren't able to leave when planned (and wouldn't have made it to the desert with a nail in the tire)

But once we finally got on the road and made it there, everything went way smoother. The hookups were easier than I thought, and having AC, a bed, and our own space made the weekend way more comfortable.

Considering I lost a fair amount of time for this and wasn't able to obtain the vehicle at the time I paid for I'd like to be compensated for the lost time.

Best regards

Second time we have rented from…

Second time we have rented from Roadsurfer and second time we have had issues with the heating. The first time (VW Camper) we have no electric heating all weekend. The second time we changed vehicles (Fiat Ducato) and had not gas heating for the first night. We received a voucher after the first time as an apology but it didn't really compensate for the impact it had on our weekend away with our young children. We thought we'd give them another try (under new management) and had the same experience. Unfortunately their customer service chatbot went down at the same time overnight, so it was only when I changed the gas cylinder the following morning in daylight that I managed to fix the problem. They should spend a lot more time talking through the vehicle with people and update their information pages about the vehicles ideally.

---

A particularly disappointing experience with roadsurfer.

The staff was friendly. However, the van had several issues (damaged window, charging problems affecting the refrigerator, and a leaking grey water tank preventing the use of the shower outside designated areas).

The return inspection was carried out quickly, yet we received charges the very next day for damages that were already present, despite having provided clear dated photo evidence with my initial complaint.

Since March 24, 2026, no substantive response has been provided, even though the charge has been processed. This handling of the dispute raises serious concerns about the level of follow-up and consideration given to customers.

Pending a proper review of this case, I remain attentive to how this matter will be addressed.

Really bad experience with Roadsurfer

Our experience with Roadsurfer was extremely disappointing. We had to wait almost 3 hours to get our camper van at the time of the pick-up, the reason being there was a leak on the water deposit and the mechanical team was trying to fix it. In doing so, they broke the outdoor table and scratch the inside of the truck. We informed this and they say it was okay, that they would take a note of the damages. We also notice some other damages (scratches on the outside of the van, curtains broken, floor of the living room damaged…) and when we told them we got the same response, that it was fine. After the pick up, we had a problem with the van and had to solve it with an external company because there was no way to contact Roadsurfer, we called multiple times to the phone listed on their page (very difficult to find) with no response. Many calls later, we spoke with an agent who had no solutions for us and only requested to take pictures and send them via email. We tried again with another agent who gave us a German phone number saying “they will help you” and when we called nobody spoke English. And the worst part? We returned the van in perfect conditions and when we received the damages report we saw that we are blamed for all those damages that we verbally informed (and took pictures of them) that were there before our use. This is unacceptable. Hope they can fix this and return our money because being charged for something we didn’t do is insane.

120V in my liberty lodge

During my rental period, the breaker failed, which resulted in a complete loss of power, including the heater. Due to these circumstances, I was forced to cut my road trip short.

This experience did not meet the expectations set at the time of booking, and it disrupted both my plans and overall travel experience.

Additionally, when I retuned the rental I was informed that I needed to email that they were unable to assist me.

Overall Pleasant Experience

We were overall pleased with our experience with the employees, the RV, and the company. The unit's water heating system was outstanding, the donation shelves at the site was much unexpected, but helpful, and communication was appreciated.

Improvements could be made in the cleaning of the unit before renting it out.

Disappointing and non-transparent return process

Very disappointing experience. When we returned the camper, we were verbally told that everything was fine and that the deposit would be released shortly. Later, we received a return report that was never shown to us and that we did not sign, followed by an invoice for alleged damage that had not been communicated at the time of return. We found the whole process unclear and far from transparent. Still waiting their explanations.

THEY SEIZED OUR DEPOSIT FOR SOMEONE ELSE' DAMAGES!

My brother and I recently rented a newer VW California Coast camper at Roadsurfer in Dublin for a few days trip around Ireland.

However, it quickly turned out that the camper's 2nd battery (the leisure battery) wasn't charging when driving, which meant that we couldn't use the cooling box, the motorized roof tent and the camping A/C.

When we realized this on the trip, we quickly reached out to Roadsurfer's hotline to VW Service Centre and AA Breakdown Assistance - who sent a mechanic just to inform that he wasn't allowed to fiddle with the electronics. As we're pretty positive people we tried to get along without, and on our way back to Roadsurfer's station we even went by a charging facility to top-op the battery before returning to mitigate damage to the electronics and battery.

Everything was documented and communicated to Roadsurfer during our trip.

Two weeks later, we receive an e-mail from Roadsurfer informing us that they've withdrawn €800(!!) from our credit card and are attempting to invoice us additional €577 for 'damages to the roof tent' WHICH WAS NOT EVEN WORKING DURING OUR RENTAL.

We have now reached out by phone and e-mail to Roadsurfer about 15 times for the past 2 weeks explaining the situation and that we have not even been able to open the roof tent because of the lack of power and therefore have no role in this damage. However we have received ZERO response.

Unfortunately it is very clear, also from other reviews, that Roadsurfer is exploiting customers' deposits to cover existing damages - and simply referring to that "every vehicle is inspected thoroughly after every rental" to cover their repair and maintenance expenses.

We cannot warn enough against renting with Roadsurfer as there's clearly incredibly low ethical code and sense of morale with regards to customer treatment, and a very real risk that they will seize your deposit to cover existing damages - regardless of whether you caused it and can evidence it.

It is without comparison the most shortsighted form of business conduct we have experienced and will certainly never have anything to do with the company again.
As a business owner ourselves, we are shocked to see this practice.

Do yourself a financial favor and rent from another company.

Trip great, post-rental unfair.

Our trip was great, it started with a good experience. Picking it up and during the trip. Taking the time to learn and check about it with the checklist helps a lot. BUT the post-rental experience has been a nightmare. Roadsurfer is attempting to charge us €199 for a hood scratch that most likely was documented in our rental agreement as pre-existing damage since August 2025. This damage was even pointed out to the clerk during pick up and she said it was already in the records.

We even took our own photos at the depot during pick-up which prove the damage was already there. When we returned the vehicle, the staff performed a walk-around and told us everything was "good," yet we received an invoice days later.
They sent photos with the bill, but none of them were taken in my presence. And anything after we delivered the key is not longer my responsibility. It feels like they have a bad practice to charge for things even after the inspection is completed. If you rent from them, keep every piece of paper and take your own time-stamped photos, as based on this situation it makes it harder to trust them.

Cancellations are SO confusing!

Cancellations are SO confusing. Can’t contact them by website, phone or email!
Policy is all over the place. 21 day, 60 day, none etc. Pay extra for this and that. Lame. So angry and cannot afford to lose $1000 as a senior. Still 60 days out but only being offered $139 of my $1139 This seems illegal. Emails in German btw

They booked me a faulty RV

They booked me an RV with a non-functional generator. Then they had me sit for almost an hour while they tried to fix it. THEN they told me they’d check to see if they had another one, which they did not. They refused to give any sort of discount or even apology. The website is also glitchy because the company is based in Europe. I will not be using them again.

Fabulous!

Easy to book. Collection is easy and the staff were so helpful. The camper van was comfortable and set up beautifully (we had the same one last year in France). It’s easy to drive, and it’s just great being able to go where you want and have a cup of tea whilst you’re there. We will be doing it again and would highly recommend it.

Hired a van for 4 days. Really helpful guy at check in who gave us lots of time to ask all the questions someone whose never hired before would. The van was equipped with everything we would need and everything worked as advertised.
