Ripped off for a "scratch"

I rented a car with RentSmart. The pickup was good. I did not avail of the full coverage that they tried to sell at the desk (I had my own insurance taken out). I dropped it off and went off to catch my flight. I'd advise to get someone from the company to look at the car with you to assess for any damages before you leave. I got charged €300 for a scratch on the boot that was barely visible. It may have already been on the car, it was so small I didn't see it during my inspection on pick up. If you don't have their full coverage insurance then I suspect they will find some "damage" with your car on return. I would avoid if possible!

SCAM

SCAM. After 3 moths, still have not received my deposit back. After contacting the support, got only a reply that deposit has been released. However my bank does not see any kind of transaction being made. SIMPLY AVOID THIS "AGENCY".

We’re sorry to read your feedback, but we must clarify an important point to avoid any misunderstanding: the security deposit is not a payment or a transaction, but a temporary block on your credit card (also called a pre-authorization).

This means that no actual withdrawal is made from your account. Once the rental ends and all conditions are met, we automatically release the blocked amount. From that point, it is entirely up to your bank to process the release and make the funds available again on your card — this typically takes up to 30 business days, depending on your bank’s policies.

We kindly ask you to remain informed about how pre-authorizations work before making accusations. If your bank is unable to see the release, we recommend requesting written confirmation from them and contacting our support again — we will be happy to assist further.

Not bad !

Everything was fine so far except the description from the airport on how to find the shuttle service it’s not detailed enough (you have to continue walking once you pass kiss and fly until you see yellow barriers and a roundabout and this is where the bus shuttle is) we weren’t the only one having issues, I even had to call three times and it was really hard to understand the workers on the phone while we specifically asked if those black vans have any logos on there and if we are on the correct spot. Once we finally found it the shuttle services are coming every other minute and bring you to an outside destination to check in was fine even the checkout whenever we returned went smoothly and no other hiccups.

Ripped off for so called ‘not fueling up’

Ripped off for so called ‘not fueling up’ the car on return. I did fill up the diesel on my rental, the pump clicked off so that means full. However the fuelgauge did not go back up. I had a feeling so I took pictures of the gasstation and time, liters of fuel on the pump, odometer of return but still they charged me 33 euro’s extra for ‘not fueling up’… it’s only 33 euro’s so nobody is going to fight for this, but I’m telling you: next time rent somewhere else!!

Customer service was Nil

Customer service was Nil. After 30 mins of driving our hire car a warning light came on the dashboard so we had to return to the office, we were assured it was only that the car needed servicing. When later we checked the oil in the car it was off the end of the dipstick, we were told to add oil and it would be refunded, but then they refused to pay after we put the oil in. The car would not lock on 4th day, we had it sorted at our own cost. On the whole a bad experience, the car had obviously not been checked over prior to handing it over to us. We would never use them again, or recommend them to anyone.

Rented a car

Rented a car, everything was fine at the beginning, then when we saw the car there was a lot of damage We drove to the desk and the employee said that if we took photos of it, it was okey. When we got the car back we got an insane creditcard charge, they said it was because of damage on the car. We got in contact showed them the pictures that we took that the damage was already there before we got the car, just like the employee said to us to do when we rented the car. But now we got and massage that the photos are not enough because the could be photoshopped. We feel like they to do this to fixed there car on our insurance. Never ever rent a car here, you are going to get scammed!

abusive charges on the credit card whiteout explanations

The car we rented was new and fine. friendly person at check in. We paid full Casco, we had no issue with this. The problem started when the rental company accused me about a traffic violation without proper documentation and instead of charging the amount once, they did it four times. whiteout explanations or proper documentation. Unfortunately, they speak only good Italian, so if you call them from abroad you don't have a chance to have a proper conversation and they hide behind the email.

Scammers.. avoid at all costs

We were slightly late (over 59 minutes) to our booking and they duly cancelled the original booking made through discover cars.com

Made to pay for a completely new booking.. no slightly additional fee no reasonable grace period for a travelling individual.

Ridiculous policy and will be raising to my card provider as fraud.

Avoid at all costs!!!

Avoid at all costs!!!! worst rental experience ever. I had an extremely negative experience with RentSmart24. They charged me €800 unfairly, despite me having full documentation and proof shared with them over WhatsApp. I’ve tried to contact them multiple times, but they continue to ignore my messages and offer no resolution. This feels like a scam, and I want to warn others, do not book with them. Absolutely untrustworthy and unprofessional.

Booked via an online comparison site.
Rent smart came out the cheapest. After reading some of the reviews on here I was concerned, BUT everything was OK
Online check in was pretty easy, the shuttle bus service was quick and both drivers realy helpful, key collection quick, the car was well presented and exactly what we needed for our trip.
Drop off was equally as easy and the staff friendly and helpful.
I would reccomend them as we had no problems, and there was no extra charges added after the service.

Pas på med dette selskab

Når jeg her efterfølgende læser andres oplevelser med dette selskab er det den samme oplevelse mange får - men selskabet ændre ikke vilkår.
DE SNYDER.
Måden de snyder på er ved ikke at ville godkende det betalings kort man fremviser, men alligevel vil de gerne modtage en betaling fra kortet, nu bare en meget højere betaling. (+ depositum fra samme kort)
Benyt et andet selskab - det er det enest jeg kan anbefale.
Hvis man begynder at skrive til den (klage) oplever man bare at de skriver det samme svar igen og igen: vi undskylder din oplevelse, men i aftalevilkårene skrev vi at vi ikke godkender dit kort.
Sådan noget fusk at skrive....
Lad vær med at benytte dette selskab !

When I subsequently read other people's experiences with this company, it is the same experience that many people have - but the company does not change the terms.
THEY CHEAT.
The way they cheat is by not wanting to approve the payment card you present, but they still want to receive a payment from the card, now just a much higher payment. (+ deposit from the same card)
Use another company - that is the only thing I can recommend.
If you start writing to them (complaining) you just experience that they write the same answer over and over again: we apologize for your experience, but in the terms of agreement we wrote that we do not approve your card.
Such a scam to write....
Do not use this company!

AVOID - Misleading charges and poor customer service

I booked my rental car through DiscoverCars and paid for full premium coverage directly through them. The day before pickup, I received a link to complete online check-in, which was supposed to speed up the process. Since I’d never done this before, I was confused by the extra options being offered – like premium cover and an extra driver – especially because I had already paid for insurance.

At the rental desk, I explained this to the staff member and clearly told him I already had premium coverage and didn’t need another one. He said “No problem,” and rushed me through the process, asking me to sign documents without showing or explaining them, apart from the security deposit. He asked me to pay using chip and pin only (no contactless), and said the first attempt failed, so I had to try again. The next day, I noticed two separate transactions on my credit card.

When I reviewed the emailed documents, I saw that I’d been charged again for premium coverage – something I had explicitly said I didn’t need. At no point did the staff inform me I was being charged for this.

The following day, I went back to ask for an explanation. The staff simply told me, “You have to speak to the colleague who did the transaction – come back on the day you return the car.” On check-out day, I asked again and a different staff member told me, “We can’t do anything about it – you’ll have to contact customer service.”

After sending three emails, I finally received a reply from customer service stating that I would not be refunded.

This whole experience was incredibly frustrating and felt like a scam. I was overcharged for something I didn’t need, ignored by the staff, and dismissed by customer service.

Avoid these scammers at all costs. Double-check everything and don’t trust what they tell you at the desk.

Disappointing experience – be careful…

I booked a car online with this company using a debit card that had sufficient funds. However, upon arrival, I was told that they only accept credit cards, which was either not clearly stated on their website or easy to miss. The staff showed absolutely no interest in helping resolve the issue — no flexibility, no effort to assist.

As a result, I was left without a car, lost time . I went to another rental company and had no issues renting a car there with the same debit card.

Very frustrating experience. Be careful when booking with this company and make sure to double-check their payment policy in advance.

Avoid at all costs

Avoid at all costs - would give 0 starts if I could.

- The woman working in the office was EXTREMELY rude both on collection and drop off. If you hate people, don’t work in a customer facing role.
- I was forced to check in online whilst standing at the check in desk. The amount of information that first needs to be manually typed in and then followed up with copies of from/back of driving licence, passport etc etc is ridiculous. It took 45min to fill in - a complete joke.
- The car was in poor condition, sounded like it was only running on half cylinders with a constant ticking noise. How that was deemed acceptable to rent out is beyond me.
- On drop-off the rude woman scolded us for not emptying our trash frontage car and forced us to do so before accepting the car - we left two empty water bottles in the car, it’s not like we trashed it. What on earth?!
- You end up waiting forever for the shuttle, it’s faster to talk. After dropping off the car we got I the shuttle, only for the driver to get out and start moving other rental cars around in the car park despite us all just sitting there waiting in the van.
- They claimed the antenna of the car was stolen (the antenna was never there), all I can say is make sure that you take a video of ALL angles of the car including the roof to protect yourself. I bet they’ve charged 20 customers for the same missing antenna by now (which costs less than €10, but they charge you +€100 for). They also don’t show you the final cost on check out - they have no issues processing the payment for the “damage handling fee” but can’t send you the invoice showing the cost? Ridiculous and unprofessional.

All I can say it avoid at all cost! Rent with one of the companies located in the terminal. I’ve never had issues with e.g. Autovia or Noleggiare and have definitely learnt my lesson the hard way!

This company is a SCAM

This company is a SCAM. They marked damage in the car that virtually did not exist and they charged us by deducting it from the security deposit without our acceptance. AVOID at all costs.

Never again.

Never again.
Because of a miscommunication with the broker Discovercars (the credit card must be physical, online not accepted), we found ourselves with no car at midnight, and no way to get to our airb&b. We had to find a hotel in the city centre at our cost. Please, be aware.

AVOID

AVOID. This company is a scam. They will fake your signature to sign the car off without marking off all damages and then invoice you an extortionate amount even when there is photo evidence of the “ problems “ before the car had been driven. No staff on arrival or leaving and will try and take your money. Avoid at all costs!!!

Rentsmart 24 scam alert!

I rented a car with Rentsmart24 from Rome Fiumicino airport from 22-29 May 2025.

At first everything was great, a nice car at a cheap price.

On returning the vehicle, the lady walked out of the office and made a beeline for the rear wiper and pointed at the bolt cover clip! (I mean who actually looks at that, is it that important), and started telling me that I would have to pay for this damage, luckily, I travel a lot and know about most of the scams by car rental companies and so I had made a video of the car. I showed her that the bolt cover was in the same condition as it originally was, I’m sure this is a 5€ part new. The poor woman was very sad that I had a video copy, she then disappointingly said that everything was ok with the car and there would be no additional charges. I received an email from them (screenshot attached) to say that there were no extra costs.

Now I find my card blocked! I called my card company and they tell me that they had detected suspicious activity because Rentsmart24 had tried to charge me 650€ on 3 occasions and for this reason my card had been blocked, thankfully rentsmart24 didn’t get the chance to steal my money, but now I have to wait a week for a new card so that these scammers don’t try to charge me on the old card again.
