So amazing!

The instructors are very helpful, and you can tell that they are very well educated on the SAT, which helps to know that their strategies will help. Also, the platform is very easy to study on and it encourages you to keep yourself accountable for the amount you're studying because it includes a little bar with the amount of time you've studied versus your weekly goal.

I was quite impressed with the SAT prep…

I was quite impressed with the SAT prep and application program. It was very thorough in the quiz and does a great job with keeping the kids on track with goal setting and accountability emails. The practice quizzes were also helpful bc we could choose what specific topics to practice. As a mom, I didn’t expect such great information for me to help with applications, so that was an added bonus!

The live classes are pretty good but…

The live classes are pretty good but kind of past paced. Their explanations of the practice questions can be sometimes confusing, the same goes for the quiz answer explanations on the perpscholar interface. However I think as a program it’s pretty good to practice and simulate SAT test, but I think if you are complietely new to some of these math topics (which I wasn’t since I had already learned everything before) I would say this platform is too difficult to use, even in the easiest class. They do previous a video for each class however I think there are still some questions or unanswered things that can be frustrating when using the interface to practice. But despite this I think it was overall a good program, the program itself is simple and easy to use so I think it can be helpful but it may not suit people how need more time to practice, and learn. Regarding the quizzes though, I wish they had more new questions and some questions sounded kind of weird or maybe that was just me.

Hi Polo, thank you for the thoughtful and balanced review! We’re really glad to hear you found the program helpful overall, and we appreciate your honest notes about the pacing and explanations.

Some topics can definitely feel fast or confusing at first, but our program is designed to adapt to your level—so with continued practice, things should start to feel more comfortable and more manageable. Stick with it, and you’ll likely find that what felt fast-paced or confusing at the beginning starts to click with more practice.

Also, if you qualify for extended time on the SAT (like 50% or 100%), you can adjust this so that the timer on your quizzes and practice tests reflects your official accommodations. Just head over to the settings menu in the top-right corner within your account, or shoot us a message at support@prepscholar.com.

Thanks again for your feedback—we’re really glad to hear that you found the platform helpful overall, and we’re rooting for your continued progress!

Hi Lukas, thank you for the review—we really appreciate the feedback and are glad you felt supported and found the resources helpful! Since live class time is limited, we focus those sessions on teaching key strategies and walking through difficult concepts.

For targeted practice, all class packages include our Complete Online Prep program, where we recommend spending around 40 hours on prep and practice outside the live sessions. Because the program adapts to everyone's individual skill level, each student can work at the right level of difficulty across different test skills. This approach lets us use class time for strategy and guidance, while ensuring you get plenty of personalized practice between sessions.

Former High School Teacher Recommendation

As a former high school teacher and the publisher of a parenting magazine, I’m always on the lookout for resources that truly support families through the education journey. PrepScholar’s Admissions Consulting program is one of the most thoughtful and thorough tools I’ve come across.

The one-on-one support offered to students is exactly what so many families need, especially when navigating the overwhelming college admissions process. Their results speak for themselves, and their approach feels personal, empowering, and accessible.

I’m proud to recommend PrepScholar to the families I serve and to my audience. This kind of guidance can make all the difference.

A Scam From An Untrustworthy Company

Paid a few thousand for tutoring. When scheduling the tutor couldn't properly state their own time zone. The customer service is bad, and the questions given are unlike the real ACT, which is more focused on speed, and instead gave 40 minutes for 8 - 12 questions. Offered less than free sites for too much money. It's a scam designed to take as much money from you as possible, as the first diagnostic test doesn't even allow to go back through previous questions, which is a critical part of the ACT. The first diagnostic test also isn't divided into sections, which is important for focusing and getting more questions right. It's designed to make whoever takes the first test look worse, so they spend more money on tutoring. I've seen other reviewers say their score went down, so as far as I'm concerned, the money is gone, as you can't get your money back.

HI Harold, we’re sorry to hear your experience didn’t meet expectations. That’s never what we want for our students or families, and we appreciate you sharing your feedback. PrepScholar has helped thousands of high schoolers since 2013, with students seeing an average ACT score increase of 4–5 points over their prior official score.

We couldn’t locate your account based on the name and details provided, so we can’t speak to the specific tutoring interaction you referenced. However, all of our tutors are trained to communicate their availability clearly—typically offering multiple days and times, with time zones stated upfront. If something fell short in that process, we’d like the chance to investigate and make things right. Please reach out to us at tutor_manager@prepscholar.com so we can look into your case directly.

As for our curriculum, many students and websites praise the quality and rigor of our materials for closely mirroring the ACT. You’re absolutely right that pacing is crucial for the test, which is why our lesson-based practice quizzes use a combined timer—helping students manage time across multiple questions just like on test day.

The diagnostic test is structured differently: each question is individually timed so we can isolate specific skills and build a custom study plan. It’s not used to determine your score baseline for our point increase guarantee (that baseline is your previous official ACT score), nor does it influence package tier recommendations.

Finally, we stand behind our 4+ Point Improvement Guarantee. If a student completes the program (i.e. reaching the last difficulty level in the online program) and doesn’t see that increase, we honor our terms with a refund for the online program and an equal number of free tutoring hours.

We’d really like to make this right. Please reach out to us directly—we’re here to help.

Warm regards,
The PrepScholar Team

Chantine was exceptionally helpful

Chantine Akiyama and PrepScholar played a pivotal role in helping me gain admission to my top-choice universities. I truly cannot overstate how much Chantine’s constant support — whether through her detailed, thoughtful essay feedback or her tireless guidance throughout my portfolio development — contributed to my success. From our ongoing conversations about refining my essays to the impromptu early-morning sessions dedicated to perfecting my portfolio, Chantine was always there when I needed her most. Her dedication and insight were invaluable, and I’m incredibly grateful. I cannot thank her enough or recommend her more highly for anyone navigating the university application process!

Sarah was an amazing counselor

Sarah was an amazing counselor. It was my first experience working with any sort of counseling service and I was really scared I would be uncomfortable. Sarah never made me feel like that, and I felt comfortable and at ease talking to her. She made the process feel less stressful, and I am truly grateful for our time together. She was so genuine and willing to help and so kind and understanding. I really appreciated her.

International student's review

As an international student, I knew nothing about the American education system. Chantine really helped me write and structure my essays and understand the admission process. I was worried I wouldn't finish everything on time because I started my application late, but I ended up finishing a month early thanks to Chantine. The work was well organized and the tips very useful. Her encouragement and kindness made me want to not disappoint her. I couldn't have done it without her.

The help was extremely helpful!

The help was extremely helpful!. My advisor, Chantine Akiyama, facilitated massively the admission process as someone who knew very little. She helped rigourously edit essays to tailor them for each school, providing plenty of ressources such as scholarship info, essay examples, inspiration etc... Overall, everything was extremely organised and well structured and couldn't have gone smoother. 100% recommend.

Chantine Akiyama Is a Great Counselor

Chantine Akiyama was my counselor for all 4 years of my high school, and I enjoyed every session with her. Not only was she informative on what I needed to succeed in college admissions and high school work, she was also my friend. She gave me valuable insight on what activities to do in school while also being genuinely interested in my personality and interests. I was aiming for art school with lots of passion but not enough work to show, but Chantine helped me gain the necesary activities and knowledge and resources to put together a portfolio that landed me in SAIC, the most influential art school in the world. I am forever grateful for her support and help during such a pivotal moment in my life. Thank you Chantine

Bad experience with PrepScholar

I had a very bad experience with PrepScholar and I would advise people not to waste money with PrepScholar. My son had SAT score of 1520 before joining PrepScholar and his score went down after taking SAT course from PrepScholar. His weighted GPA was 95% and I paid $11000 to PrepScholar but he didn’t get in any of his targets or dream schools. They don’t know what they are doing. I have a PHD in organic chemistry myself and I believe that I would have done a much better job. They screwed up my son’s college experience forever. He worked with Chantine Akiyama and Daniel Plymire. Both were equally bad and didn’t give even a single meaningful advise to help my son. My money is wasted and they are not willing to give any money back. Please don’t enroll and look for other college counseling services.

Vijata, we’re truly sorry to hear that your experience with PrepScholar didn’t go as hoped. We know how high the stakes are in the college admissions process, and we genuinely empathize with the disappointment you and your son must have felt.

After carefully reviewing your student’s case, we’d like to respectfully share some context. From the beginning, our admissions team raised concerns about the college list, which you chose to self-curate and which was heavily focused on Ivy League and Top 15 schools. These programs, especially in engineering, turn away thousands of applicants each year with perfect GPAs and test scores. While your student had many strengths, his SAT score, grades, and extracurricular activities did not reach the level that typically distinguishes successful applicants at these colleges.

Our counselors advised multiple times to rebalance the list and suggested also applying to programs where he’d have a higher chance of admission. Despite these recommendations, over 80% of the final list remained focused on reach schools. For context, a strategic college list should include 25–30% reach schools, 40–50% targets, and 25–30% safeties.

We also recommended holding off on some early applications to allow more time for essay development, but several essays were ultimately submitted under tight timeframes. In addition, most target and safety school applications were handled independently, outside our support.

Chantine and Daniel put in genuine care and effort, and truly wanted the best for your student. We’re proud that over 4 out of 5 PrepScholar students are admitted to one of their top-choice schools—including Ivy League and Top 15 programs—but we know how painful it is when things don’t go as hoped.

The best thing about this class is the connections

The best thing about this class is the connection, without a doubt the teacher creates the way we learn, the connection to the work would not ever have been deep enough for me to understand without the teacher giving me a good way to experience it, by far this is the most fun I've had learning and the connection to the class has been fun

Over the span of 6 weeks progress update.

Over the span of 6 weeks, I've learned a vast amount of valuable information that helped me to prepare for the upcoming SAT exam. I felt like I was exposed to new information in both subject areas especially during the reading and writing section. The only largest obstacle I feel that I need to improve is time management. Otherwise, I'm definitely prepared for the SAT. Thank you so much for the support.
