Ben is an excellent tutor

Ben is an excellent tutor. In a very short time he is highlighting issues our son has in English which I wish one of his teachers had addressed many years ago. Would recommend him to everyone - really good

Very easy to use

Very easy to use. There are admin staff at the back to help you to find tutors to match your needs if necessary. The tutors would send you a report after lesson so that you can know what/how your kids did and what's the plan in next lessons.

Patient teacher with clear explanations

At the beginning, we had one teacher, but after a few lessons we decided to cancel as the teaching method was not suitable for our son. After that, we had five free online meetings with different teachers and chose Prashanth. He is a lovely maths teacher who explains concepts clearly and always sends a report after each lesson. Would highly recommend 😊

Exceptional math tutoring for my daughter with Kanika

My daughter had an excellent experience with Kanika for GSCS math tutoring. She explained difficult concepts clearly, was incredibly patient, and tailored each session to her pace and needs. Her real-world examples made abstract topics much easier to grasp, and her structured lesson plans helped her track progress and stay motivated.

Key strengths:
- Clear explanations of challenging topics (algebra, geometry, calculus concepts relevant to GSCS)
- Personalised lesson plans targeting her weak areas
- Regular practice with progress checks and timely feedback
- Punctual, supportive, and responsive to questions between sessions

Results:
- Notable improvement in understanding and problem-solving skills
- Increased confidence ahead of GSCS assessments
- Steady improvement in practice scores and test readiness

No good for new tutors; overpriced for parents

Short summary: You'll pay £55+ for a DBS check and never get any jobs. It also is overpriced for parents with the website taking a larger cut than any others.

The signup process is slow, but somewhat understandably as you have to do an enhanced DBS check (you don't have to do this if you've done one in the last 12 weeks). I began the process in mid October and only finished the sign up process at the start of November.

The slow signup process itself is manageable. What's really annoying is how you get assigned jobs. Once you're signed up you get about 1 email every 2 days asking if you can take a 'cover slot', which is a one off session covering for another tutor. This means you don't get a regular tutee, but is a feature that I imagine is quite good for tutees who would otherwise miss a session so I can understand it's value. However, they're assigned on a first come first serve basis meaning if you are not constantly checking your emails you absolutely will not get a slot (I think for cover slots the fastest I've checked is within 30 minutes and it was already gone). As far as I can tell these also don't take into account the times you've said you're available, making them even more useless (I've said I'm free every evening and weekend and have had slots offered to me all times of the day during the week). I've yet to book a single cover slot in the last 2 months.

In addition to the one off cover sessions, you will about twice a week get an email saying there's a recurring slot available. This is more normal tutoring, where you would have a student for a set of (normally 10) lessons. However, like the cover slots these are assigned on a first come first serve basis with emails sent out at random times. I actually happened to check my email (purely by chance) within 4 minutes of receiving one of these, thinking I would finally get a chance to book something. Alas, the slot was already gone so I've yet to book on to a reccuring slot either.

All this is assuming you also remember to 'boost' your account every week, which makes the system know you're actively looking for work. Not sure why that isn't the default.

Add to that that the sign up system is quite poor and overall I'd say it's a useless experience. The only possible upside is the online classroom features (you have to use their inbuilt system, which is good for safeguarding) seems decent, but like I said I've not actually had a slot yet to test it out. In fairness it may well be better for other subjects, but for STEM this is my experience.

I of course think the DBS check is important, but there must be a better way than paying that much money up front to then be assigned jobs based on first come first serve.

Hi Tom,

Thank you for taking the time to leave such detailed feedback. We’re really sorry to hear that your experience so far has been frustrating, particularly as a new tutor.

DBS checks
An enhanced DBS check is a legal requirement for anyone tutoring children, and safeguarding is something we take extremely seriously. We understand that paying £55 upfront can feel like a significant investment. In the past, we offered DBS loans, but this proved unsustainable as we often struggled to recover the cost. As a result, we now require the DBS fee to be paid upfront, which is clearly outlined in the DBS Terms and Conditions that tutors agree to before applying.
For tutors who already hold a valid DBS completed within the last 12 weeks, we do accept this to avoid unnecessary additional costs.

Availability of opportunities
We completely appreciate how discouraging it can be not to secure lessons straight away. October and early November can be a quieter period for school-based tutoring, as schools are often still finalising timetables, student groups, and subject allocations at the start of the academic year. Historically, opportunities increase as the term progresses, with a significant ramp-up from late January onwards as schools prepare for exam periods.

How lesson allocation works
To avoid overwhelming tutors with a large number of simultaneous releases, we don’t offer every opportunity to all tutors at once. Instead, tutors are assigned a priority status, with new tutors typically starting on Priority 2. Boosting your profile, keeping your availability up to date (particularly between 2pm–5pm when most school lessons take place), and maintaining reliability all help to increase your priority and improve your chances of seeing opportunities earlier.
Boosting is designed to signal that you’re actively looking for work, rather than acting as a barrier. It also helps our Tutor Matching team identify tutors who are ready and available when supporting parents and schools.

Cover and Recurring Slots
Cover slots and recurring opportunities are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, which we understand can feel competitive. In the case of cover slots, pupils are often already expecting a lesson to take place, so it’s essential that we find a replacement tutor as quickly as possible to avoid disrupting their learning. While we aim to match opportunities to the availability tutors have set, a degree of flexibility is sometimes required, as these requests come directly from schools with specific and time-sensitive needs.

More ways to find work
To help tutors access more earning opportunities, we also offer eligible school tutors the option to join our Private platform, where you can work directly with parents as well as schools. Tutors who are struggling to pick up school lessons may be migrated across (or can request this), giving access to additional opportunities and tailored profile support.
If any tutor is finding it difficult to secure lessons, our team is always happy to help with personalised advice, such as improving profile content, subject offerings, or availability, to increase visibility and chances of being matched.

We really value this feedback, as it helps us continue improving how we support tutors. While experiences can vary depending on subject and time of year, we remain committed to providing a fair, safe, and supportive platform for both tutors and students.

Thank you again for providing us with your feedback.

Great tutoring - Admin a little clunky

The actual tutoring and arrangements are great. It took a while to get a tutor in the first place but once we did, then all good.

The fact MyTutor has come off of the BrightHorizons platform is a huge shame and will stop me using the service long term

Hi Matthew,
Thank you for taking the time to leave your review.

We’re happy to hear that you’ve been having a great experience with your tutor so far, and apologise for the time it took to get that sorted.

We’re sorry to hear that you no longer wish to continue with lessons due to us moving away from the BrightHorizons platform.

We understand that this change may be disappointing, but want to reassure you of the quality of our tutors available on the website, and that our tried-and-tested ‘classic platform’ will retain all of the features that you are used to using when booking lessons.
We also review our pricing every year to make sure we're striking the right balance between keeping lessons affordable, making sure tutors are paid fairly, and maintaining our quality of service and support for you.

We’d love to hear any additional feedback you may have for the platform, and if you’d like to discuss pricing or potentially keeping your current tutor, please feel free to reach out to us via phone, chat or email us at support@mytutor.co.uk

Thank you again for providing us with your feedback.
