MetLife was founded over 150 years ago to help families navigate life’s twists and turns with financial protection. But then in 2020 we realized something: who rounds out a family better than our pets? And thus- MetLife Pet Insurance was born. Backed by a group of pet lovers determined to treat your pets as if they were our own, MetLife Pet Insurance strives to help you make sure your furry family members are protected. Our comprehensive pet insurance policies for dogs and cats help you cover the cost of injuries, illnesses, pet meds, holistic care, emergencies and more- allowing pet owners to help give their pets the best care possible. We also offer a unique family plan,1 which allows pet parents to cover up to three pets on one policy, and even offer a 0-day waiting period on accidents and optional Preventive Care benefits.2 That means no matter what your pets are getting into, they can be protected by midnight on the very same day you enroll in a policy. This commitment to helping provide pet parents with the best pet insurance possible, may be part of why MetLife Pet Insurance has won the “Pet Insurance of the Year” award 4 years in a row. 3 But that’s not all. Here at MetLife Pet, our passion for animals extends beyond the home. That’s why in addition to offering cost-effective pet insurance for dogs and cats, we also work with hundreds of animal shelters across the country to help our furry friends find their forever homes. Because at MetLife Pet, our pets are more than just animals. They’re family. 1 Coverage options may be limited for certain ages. 2 Family plan policies are limited to dogs age 12 and under and cats age 14 and under. Multi-policy discount is not available with Family Plans. 3 “2022, 2023, 2024 Pet Insurance of the Year Award” Winners, Pet Independent Innovation Awards Pet Insurance coverage issued by Metropolitan General Insurance Company, a Rhode Island insurance company headquartered at 700 Quaker Lane, Warwick, RI 02886. Some points I wanted to mention from my recent experiences with MetLife Pet Insurance:
1) It is very frustrating to provide all requested information that is not reviewed by a person, but rather an automated bot that can make decisions. When you’re paying a generous amount of money to protect your pets, it should be a standard to provide exemplary customer service and actual review of these items. It is unacceptable to have the customer need to catch mistakes missed by a whole MetLife process.
2. Chat reviews and processes need to be updated. The last chat I attempted sounded robotic as if it’s an AI agent. Responses were not answering questions, not providing any detail, and attempting to end the chat multiple times which caused far more confusion and frustration than when I received the incorrectly filed EOB. Responses from the agent proved clear that my messages and files had not been reviewed. The agent tried to end the chat, I said that I was still not sure of what the issue/answer is so the chat should not conclude, she noted that “the SOAP notes were never submitted.” I’m not sure how we can go from wanting to end the conversation to telling me information was missing (it wasn’t). When asked for a copy of the transcript, the agent told me to “take screenshots” followed by ending the chat.
3. Immediately following this chat experience, I called in and spoke to Miranda who was so incredibly helpful and polite. She was able to review my claim information and noted that the auto review incorrectly categorized it and thus closed it. HOWEVER, she assured me that she would have a live adjuster review the claim (which ended up in receiving my reimbursement). Had it not been for Miranda, I would’ve switched insurances as this was now the second instance where I had to looking for errors after ensuring I provided every piece of information requested.
4. It was from the phone call I learned that chat messages are not AI agents (which is further irritating given the lack of any information provided), and that initial reviews are screened by an automated system. If this system can deny a claim, it needs to be HEAVILY reviewed and reformed to ensure customers/clients are receiving CORRECT answers without having to dig for the error.
Overall, these are issues that can be fixed, and I hope they are. But until customers can be certain their claims are reviewed correctly, I wouldn’t recommend MetLife.
Getting a hold of a real person on the phone can be a little lengthy, but once I did their help was incredible! They were happy to help me and remediate an issue that popped up due to “automatic approval/denial process”
Honestly, as a medical health professional myself, I could not believe a claim representative would overlook standard of practice and require additional documentation when the veterinarian’s notes were very clear and supportive of the treatment provided… A total disgrace!!! If you’re really interested in providing better service, please feel free to call me at any time!!!

MetPet was always there when I needed them. Right up til my Great Pyrenees passed away last week.
Compassionate, competent, excellent customer service and they understand the medical issues that dogs run into.
It will be difficult to get another dog anytime soon but if I do, I will go right back to MetPet. Five Stars! Thank you.
