EQUITY-001 Equity matters

EQUITY-001 Equity matters: Introduction to Human Equity Action Reflection Transformation (HEART)
In 2025, I participated in The Geneva Learning Foundation(TGLF) course: EQUITY-001 Equity matters: Introduction to Human Equity Action Reflection Transformation (HEART). During the programme, I was taught the “5 Whys” which is a method to find the root cause of a problem. Once you know the root cause of a problem, you can tackle it systematically, and that makes you a leader in your field.
The method is not just asking “why” five times, but imagine it like digging a hole to discover water.
A Case when I used it: As a university professor of Public Health Parasitology, I noticed a postgraduate student who missed classes and was on the verge of abandoning the programme due to the mental stress she received from two of her lecturers, who refused to accept her seminar work. I used the “root cause” method I learned during The Geneva Learning Foundation EQUITY-001 Equity matters: Introduction to Human Equity Action Reflection Transformation (HEART) of 2025, to trace the root cause and help the student overcome the challenges.
This root cause was arrived at using the ‘5 whys’, thus:
1. Why did the female student miss some lectures and face some challenges with some lecturers? - She was absent from school on several occasions
2. Why the several absences from school? - Death of husband and associated/extended family problems
3. Why the associated/extended family problems? - A woman, unlike men, must spend some months inside, mourning the late husband and also carry out many other family activities
4. Why must women play such roles? - Men and tradition in Africa see it as their role
5. Why should men and tradition in Africa see it as the women's role? - Gender discrimination
I realised that it was a case of Gender discrimination, whereby in Africa, women are burdened with domestic activities, which affects all aspects of their lives, such as when they lose their husband, give birth, are pregnant, are at work, in school, and such overwhelms them that challenges of mental health set in. This is a problem of power where men rule the world.
The root cause was transferred from home and the community outside of the school environment, but the effect was felt in the school. I hence developed an “action plan”, an act which I mastered and which is one of the Key aspects of TGLF courses. The plan and actions to control the problem was in the school, where I have control and can make my own impact as a professor. In this context, the school served as the community. Given that both the female students and the teachers are involved, the action plan considered both and a workshop was planned. Female students also served in the planning committee, as well as one of the resource persons, because the problem centered around them.
Result: Mentoring, every day phone calls from committee members and associated jokes and words of advice, plus the planned workshop, subsequent jokes brought her back to life. She subsequently completed her program and is actively involved in her workplace. Finding the root cause and drawing a resultant action plan and its execution now makes some female postgraduate students feel less insecure and graduate with a good mental health state.
My resolve is to mentor young colleagues and graduate students and introduce them to TGLF. I would like them to master the act of “Developing an action plan”, which is one of the key aspects of TGLF courses. The peer-review style in all TGLF courses and helping others do the same is an excellent training method that will boost the confidence of any health practitioner or facilitator. As an Ambassador, all my mentees should be able to use the “5 Whys” because once you know the root cause of a problem, you can tackle it systematically, and that makes you a leader in your field. You can follow them. I have benefited a lot from their courses (FGS & Equity). You will gain skills in the following: developing an action plan; practical problem-solving by getting to the root cause; peer review and confidence building; and collaboration. As we go, we'll pay attention to the new courses being advertised and choose the one you would benefit from.

Participating in the HEART program by Geneva Learning Foundation

Participating in the HEART program offered by the Geneva Learning Foundation was an enriching and inspiring experience. Through the program I had opportunity to learn from healthcare workers from different countries and share experiences that motivated me to improve both personally and professionally. The peer learning component was particularly valuable, as it allowed me to listen to and learn from colleagues who are implementing innovative approaches in their various areas of work to improve the quality of care. These exchanges broadened my perspective and provided practical insights that I can apply in my own setting. As a result of this experience, my confidence has grown significantly and I now feel better equipped to drive positive change and make a meaningful impact in the community I serve.

The Women Inspiring Women Course Was Truly Inspiring and Impactful

The Women Inspiring Women course was a meaningful and enriching experience for me. It gave me the opportunity to reflect on the important role women play in leadership, community development, social change, and inspiring others to overcome challenges.

I particularly appreciated the opportunity to learn from the experiences and perspectives of women from different backgrounds and communities. The course reinforced my belief that when women are supported, empowered, and given opportunities to participate meaningfully, the benefits extend beyond individuals to families, communities, and society as a whole.

As someone involved in community development and empowerment through the Rosana Empowerment Foundation (REF), the learning was relevant to my work and strengthened my appreciation of the need to continue promoting women's leadership, participation, and economic empowerment.

Overall, it was an inspiring, thought-provoking, and well-structured learning experience. I am grateful to The Geneva Learning Foundation and everyone who contributed their knowledge and experiences to making the course impactful.

Equity requires thinking outside the box

It was amazing how diverse equity was... and that equity issues are experienced at micro and macro level. Most importantly, equity does not rely solely on policy, guidelines, systems and structures... as providers we must think outside the box to ensure equity given available resources. For example, if I am working in a health center with limited resources, what are the little things I can do here and there to ensure that as much as possible there is equitable access to care.

My experience with the Geneva Learning

My experience with the Geneva Learning Foundation’s menopause course was transformative.

I came into the course expecting to learn, but I left with a significantly different perspective on menopause, women’s health and the possibilities for practical impact. I learned, I grew, and, perhaps most importantly, I came away with ideas about what I could actually do with what I had learned.

One of the things I particularly appreciated was how much the course required us to engage. It was challenging, but in a very good way. The deadlines kept me on my toes and ensured that I actually did the work rather than simply moving through the course content. The facilitators took the time to read our work and engage with it, which made it clear that we were not just completing assignments for the sake of completing them.

The peer-review process was another highlight for me. We were required to review the work of other participants, provide constructive feedback and meet a minimum word count. This meant that we had to genuinely engage with other people's thinking. I learned a great deal from reading their action plans and seeing the practical steps others were considering. It also made me more thoughtful about my own work, knowing that others would be reading and responding to it. What I particularly appreciated was that the Geneva Learning Foundation team modelled the same level of engagement with our own work.

I also valued the emphasis on responsible use of AI. We were expected to disclose when we had used AI and, importantly, to bring our own thinking and real-life examples rather than simply submitting AI-generated content. In a world where AI is increasingly becoming part of learning and professional practice, I found this approach both relevant and responsible.

By the end of the course, I felt accomplished and energised. I didn't feel that I had simply acquired theoretical knowledge or another certificate. I felt equipped with knowledge, ideas and a sense that I could make a practical difference.

I would highly recommend this course to health professionals, researchers, policymakers, workplace leaders, anyone working in women's health, and, importantly, women experiencing menopause themselves.

For me, that is what made the course different: it didn't just teach me about menopause. It challenged me to think differently, learn from others, apply what I was learning and consider what practical impact I could make going forward.

Equity in Healthcare: Seeing Every Patient with Dignity and Compassion

What I would say to a colleague who is hesitating

My name is Louise Nkusu Lusangu. I am a nurse and midwife by profession, and I am currently working with the Motor Neuron Disease Association (MNDA) in Cape Town, South Africa, where I work as an advisor and counsellor. I support people living with motor neuron disease, including patients who may lose their ability to speak, as well as their families. Through community visits and counselling, I help families understand the disease, cope with the challenges they face, and maintain hope even when there is no cure.

To a colleague who is hesitating to enrol in the Geneva Learning Foundation's Equity Matters: Introduction to HEART course, I would say: please enrol. This course can open your mind and change the way you approach patients and communities. It helped me understand equity in health more deeply and made me realise that, as healthcare workers, we must treat every person with dignity, respect and compassion, regardless of their background, nationality, documents or circumstances.

One experience that particularly made me think differently was seeing how a foreign patient was treated when she went to a healthcare facility. Because of her circumstances and documents, she was not approached with the same respect and care that every patient deserves. This made me reflect on my own responsibility as a healthcare professional. I learned that I must listen to every patient's story, understand their situation and avoid judging or treating people differently because of who they are.

The course was especially useful for me in learning how to approach patients, how to listen to them, and how to recognise inequities that can affect their access to healthcare. It also encouraged me to learn more about public health. Before taking this course in September 2025, there were many things about equity and public health that I did not understand. Today, I have a broader perspective and I have the courage to continue learning.

What I wish I had known before starting is how much this course would challenge me to look at my own practice and the way I interact with people. It taught me that equity is not simply about treating everyone in exactly the same way; it is also about understanding people's different circumstances and making sure that everyone is treated fairly and with dignity.

So, to my fellow healthcare workers, do not hesitate. Enrol in the course. You will learn things you may not have known before, develop new skills for working with patients and communities, and gain the confidence to continue learning and improving your practice. For me, the Geneva Learning Foundation has opened my mind to new ways of thinking, and it has encouraged me to learn even more about equity, public health and compassionate healthcare.

TGLF- MORE THAN A NETWORK.

The Geneva Learning Foundation and my interaction dates back to 2021 ,when they launched " WHO -IA 2030 - Level 1 scholar program ". It was not my first exposure with any international platform as I earlier remained ," FP Voice (10th Feb'2016) FP2020.
Regardless of any bias, I found TGLF team committed to the cause of advocacy and building a consensus of international community on the need of bringing forward people from different disciplines to identify their roles in achieving universal immunisation coverage to prevent disability and death due to vaccine preventable diseases. Through regular Teach to Reach Events, a large number of health related personnel came forward, shared their work experiences, highlighted the challenges before panelists from UN Agencies like WHO, UNICEF,GAVI etc from time to time. TGLF team encouraged all those participants who shared local solutions to local problems within available community resources.
Over years, they broadened the scope beyond immunisation and now focusing on climate change as well.
Due to progressive approach, there was addition of new segments, new ways to improve networking between health care providers from sub saharan African counties to middle east, to south east Asia.
I learnt a lot through these events and referred my colleagues , students either working in heath ministry or working in community.
The regular correspondence with Reda Sadki, Charlotte Mbuh never left me without guidance.

The Geneva Learning Foundation (TGLF)…

The Geneva Learning Foundation (TGLF) recently concluded its Teach to Reach 11 program, and I must say, it has been a transformative experience for me and many health workers. One of the most useful things I learned at Teach to Reach was the importance of collaboration and sharing best practices. I've started implementing regular team discussions in my workplace to encourage open communication and problem-solving, which has significantly improved our efficiency in addressing health issues.

A memorable story that comes to my mind about a fellow participant who shared their approach to tackling waterborne diseases in their community. Inspired by their success, I adapted their strategies to our local context, leading to a community health campaign that not only raised awareness but also provided essential resources for water purification. This initiative directly contributed to a decrease in illness related to contaminated water.

Learning alongside others in Teach to Reach has profoundly changed my perspective on teamwork. I've come to appreciate the diverse experiences and insights that each participant brings, fostering a spirit of collaboration that I now carry into my daily work. After participating in Teach to Reach, I see my role not just as a health worker but as a community leader who can drive meaningful change.

If a friend asked why they should join Teach to Reach, I would tell them that it’s an invaluable opportunity to learn from a global network of health professionals. The knowledge and connections gained can empower them to make a significant impact in their communities, just as it has for me.

My Exceptional Experience with The Geneva Learning Foundation's Teach to Reach Malaria Special Event

My experience with The Geneva Learning Foundation's Teach to Reach Malaria Special Event was truly exceptional. The opportunity to engage with fellow health professionals from malaria-endemic countries, sharing knowledge and best practices in a collaborative environment, was invaluable.

The foundation excelled in several areas:

1. Structured peer learning: The event's design facilitated meaningful interactions among participants, allowing us to learn from each other's experiences and challenges.

T2R Networking Platform For Health Workers.

What made my experience great is that, I found T2R a free network platform where health care professionals interact, share ideas, strategies and insights to unlock the power of peer learning to drive meaningful change. With this I have learned a lot from other professionals because what we experience in our country is not different from other countries. About malaria and climate change, I learned more about prevention methods, treatment and how to tackle challenges and shared the ideas with my community which we use to date.
For example in my community, we prevent malaria by clearing bushes, making drainage systems, we do proper disposal of garbage and encourage them to sleep under treated bed nets. We also discourage people from living a long river banks too, for safety purposes during climate changes and tackling challenges.

Learning with other people have build my confidence, changed the way I work with others , my communication skills and interaction, how to engage others in volunteering projects and peer learning.

How I see my future after T2R is that, with the knowledge acquired from T2R, we shall be able to tackle neglected tropical diseases to leveraging local solutions for global challenges like climate change and malaria. I will always advice my friends that T2R is a free networking platform where professionals create, share, learn and interact with content and connect with others.
