Permanent Damage. Zero Accountability.

My recent experience was deeply distressing and has had lasting consequences for my dental health. Due to serious errors in diagnosis and treatment planning, my teeth were significantly damaged, requiring corrective treatment elsewhere. What should have been routine care resulted in avoidable harm.

Even more troubling than the clinical failures was the complete lack of accountability. At no point was responsibility acknowledged, nor was there any genuine effort to resolve the situation. My concerns were met with defensiveness rather than transparency, leaving me to manage the physical, emotional, and financial consequences alone.

After seeking an independent assessment, I was advised that corrective treatment was necessary as a direct result of the previous work. No patient should have to undergo further invasive procedures because of preventable mistakes.

I am also seriously concerned about the authenticity of many of the positive reviews associated with this practice. A significant number appear generic, vague, and lacking in detail. Given the contrast between these brief five-star comments and the detailed negative experiences reported by multiple patients, it raises legitimate questions. From my perspective, the positive reviews appear designed to dilute or neutralize negative feedback rather than reflect genuine patient experiences.

A consistent pattern emerges in the critical reviews: poor clinical outcomes, warnings regarding complex procedures (including root canals), billing and quotation disputes, and defensive responses when concerns are raised. This pattern cannot be ignored.

I cannot recommend this practice. If you are considering invasive or costly dental treatment, I strongly urge you to obtain an independent second opinion, request fully itemised written quotes, and ensure you receive complete copies of your clinical records before proceeding.

Treatment performed on the wrong tooth and required remedial care

I attended Cosmodent Bellville as an overseas patient with limited time in South Africa. My request and consent were for one specific tooth only (tooth #10), based on the X-ray I provided in advance and the written discussion before my arrival.

Timeline and what happened:

17 October 2025: I shared an X-ray and asked for advice and costs for tooth #10. I was told the tooth required re-treatment.

14 November 2025 (appointment): The narrative changed. Andre Dumas stated in writing that “both” teeth had posts/abscesses and that he would treat both, including removing “the other one” the following week. This was not the single-tooth scope I travelled for and consented to.

Immediately after this work: I experienced complications and the visible appearance of my teeth changed. My teeth were straight before treatment, and a tooth became visibly skewed afterwards (this is clear in the before/after images I have uploaded).

I then developed infection/pain in the same area (photo evidence uploaded).

Because of the infection and the visible change, I sought an independent endodontic assessment and had a CBCT scan performed by a third party. The CBCT findings and the clinician’s explanation were extremely concerning, including evidence consistent with a serious procedural error (you can see why in the lateral CBCT views I have uploaded).

The post-treatment X-ray and the extracted-tooth images show the extent of the work performed, and the extracted tooth evidence demonstrates the post position and perforation issue that was identified.

Ultimately, I had to proceed with extraction and further remedial planning (again, documented and supported by images and records).

What makes this particularly serious is that the written explanations backtracked and changed over time versus what was originally discussed and what I requested. I have uploaded a chronology matrix screenshot (requested scope vs what was done/said) and before/after photos, X-ray, CBCT, and extraction evidence so the public can review the facts for themselves.

I have also submitted a formal complaint to the HPCSA

Stay far away from Dr. Andre M Dumas

We used Dr. Andre M Dumas for dental treatment in Cape Town and had a very negative experience.

The fees initially appeared competitive, but the total cost increased as the work progressed. More importantly, the outcome was poor: following treatment, my wife developed complications including an infection, and we ultimately had to seek corrective treatment from another dentist.

We attempted to contact Dr. Dumas for follow-up and a plan to address the problem, but we did not receive constructive support. What further undermined our confidence was the inconsistency in explanations. We were told one account at the time of treatment, and later the explanation changed. After obtaining a second opinion, the assessment and findings we received did not align with what we had been told previously.

If Dr. Dumas responds to this review by claiming he cannot identify us as patients, I am comfortable confirming privately (with appropriate proof) that we did receive treatment, and I am willing to share the timeline and supporting documentation with anyone who is seriously considering this practice.

Based on our experience, I would not recommend Dr. Dumas. I would encourage prospective patients to prioritise a fully professional clinic environment, clear written treatment plans, transparent pricing, and a documented aftercare and remediation process if complications arise.
