Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 114 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Consumers frequently noted that contacting customer service meant enduring excessively long phone queues and unresponsive online chats that frequently disconnected. Reviewers expressed immense frustration over rapidly rising monthly costs, hidden rules, and administrative failures that severely delayed their policy documents and transfer certificates. Some reviewers were happy with polite staff members who provided clear explanations, and a few also experienced a smooth and efficient joining process when first signing up. Others appreciated having access to specific coverage options like dental care despite the overall difficulties encountered with the company.

Unable to contact them or to chat with someone competent

If you have a query forget about trying to contact them by phone. They are always experiencing a high volume of calls. You will hold on forever and the callback option does not work. The messaging service is also extremely slow. I was in the same chat for 7 hours with 4 different agents. First agent tried some troubleshooting, but was very bad at it. Second one could not understand my question at all. Third one couldn't understand what was wrong. Last one was like a bot giving premade responses that were irrelevant to my query. In the end I just gave up as none of them could tell me if my everyday rewards account was linked on their system. Fortunately, I changed Health insurance providers before I had an emergency where I really needed to speak to someone competent,

EDIT: BUPA has sorted out my issue which I'm thankful for. I will change my experience rating from 1 to 3 stars.

Bupa has let me down and is abusing its…

Bupa has let me down and is abusing its position in terms of termination and transferring to new insurers. We made a request to transfer to a new insurer well over three weeks ago. I am paying the premium with the new insurer but have not received the member transfer certificate from Bupa. This means I have a waiting period because of that, and it is impossible to speak to anyone at Bupa. They do not respond to any emails or chats, and everything ends with having to wait for someone, which has become frustrating and seems very deliberate on the part of Bupa.

It is quite simple: Bupa has been requested to provide a transfer certificate to my new medical insurance. This has not been done. Bupa has intentionally delayed this for over three weeks, which is unacceptable. This certainly puts my health at risk, and it is not something a company providing healthcare should be doing.

Update
Bupa Australia has very poor moral and ethical values and clearly prioritizes profits over people. They are currently holding me hostage by delaying the production of a transfer certificate I need to switch to a new private insurer.

I spent an hour talking to them, and they outright lied to me, claiming they sent the letter last week. However, neither the insurer nor I have received this elusive certificate.

They are playing games with people, holding them ransom, and offering better deals to try to retain them. As the lady at Bupa mentioned, "You are still within the 30-day period where you can change your mind." Despite legislation clearly stating that the insurer must send a certificate within 14 days, they are not complying. They are violating the law as well as any moral and ethical standards.

I wonder why anyone should use Bupa for insurance when they treat people this way.

Bupa text service do not use and take transcript photos

Bupa phone line conversations/contacts in Australia are great
But do NOT use BUPA text service
Bad experience today after verification.. all I was asking for was a voucher which Bupa give out to verified customers as a one off, when member is purchasing glasses. This was verified by Bupa person but then I think the process went awry.. I was ghosted and entire process which one would think takes 10 minutes took 45 mins and they then disconnected me.
I went back in half an hour later asking for transcript of text and they maintained whole process had not occurred. My advice is if you have to talk to them take a photo of the whole conversation..
NOT happy with their text group.. Sorry but I think it has been outsourced to overseas!

£1000 a month to be told “Use the NHS”

£1000 a month to be told “Use the NHS”
I’ve been diagnosed with Lyme disease and the initial treatment of antibiotics hasn’t worked. Despite 20+ years of membership they refused to allow me to see an expert for further treatment. Lyme can destroy your spine and brain but BUPA don’t care. I was lied to, insulted and told “use the NHS”.
Disgusting, money-grabbing, inhuman and totally uncaring.

Absolutely by far the worst insurance…

Absolutely by far the worst insurance company offered to students. Barely covers anything. Their online services such as blua is terrible. They outsource their calls to people who don’t know what they’re doing other than repeat the script 20 times. Ive missed appointments because of website errors and both Bupa and Blua’s call service options being a waste of time.

Ridiculously bad customer service

Ridiculously bad customer service. I tried to change my cover via their chat function. They kept disconnecting me and I had to answer the same questions every single time. I spent 4hrs either answering redundant questions or waiting in the queue. I ended up canceling my whole policy and got a new policy at another company.

The customer service representatives I…

The customer service representatives I spoke with have always been polite, friendly, and respectful, so I appreciate their professionalism. Unfortunately, my experience with Bupa's refund process has been extremely disappointing.

It has been more than 8 months, and I still have not received my refund. Every time I call, I am told that my refund is "being processed," but nothing ever happens. When I contacted them again, I was informed that my previous insurance had never been cancelled, even though I had already spoken to Bupa about it. I keep getting different answers and have been stuck in the same loop for months.

Waiting over eight months for a refund is simply unacceptable. I hope Bupa improves its internal communication and resolves customer issues much more efficiently so others do not have the same frustrating experience.

Worst experience with Bupa

I had gone to GP few times and bought the prescription only medicines as well from few pharmacies in September, 2025. I lodged the claim with Bupa and got refunds for those GP visits and medicines as well. But not all of it was refunded. They only refunded me 300$ for GP consultation and told me I reached my limit to claim for the fiscal year. I asked them if I could claim the remaining amount in the next fiscal year and they said yes I could claim them in the next fiscal year. Fast-forward to July, 2026. I tried claiming for the remaining GP visits but they have now told me that they won't refund me for the claims in 2025 as I reached the limit of 300$ and in January, 2026, my limit resets again. They changed their words and they absolutely can't be trusted. Also getting hold of them is very hard. Everytime I had to contact them by chat feature in their website, someone new joins the time and needs the same information for n+1 number of times. Absolutely frustrating experience with Bupa.

Bupa is horrible

After switching from Bupa to another provider, about a month later, they sent me a letter requesting me to send $187.00 to their nominated account but the letter doesn't state what it was for. Bunch of scammers

Don't seem to know how their products work

I'm a bupa customer and they're currently refusing to disclose out of pocket fees for my cover. Customer service seems to be bot operated and the conversation just keeps going in circles. I spent 11 hours back and forth in their chat and the outcome was they confirmed that I'm covered and refused to cover that same service once I sent the invoice 5 mins later. It's obvious that the person has no idea what's covered by Bupa and customer service isutterly ridiculous.

Appalling customer service

I had an extremely frustrating experience with Bupa's online chat support. What should have been a straightforward enquiry took over 30 minutes without my basic questions being answered.

The consultant repeatedly asked for my membership number despite me providing it multiple times, frequently disappeared for long periods without explanation, and seemed unable to understand even simple questions about my cover. Several responses were difficult to decipher, with incomplete sentences, missing words and unexplained acronyms that made them almost impossible to understand.

I came away with none of the information I needed and will now have to contact Bupa through another channel. If you're considering using the live chat service for anything more complex than a very basic enquiry, I'd recommend calling instead.

Rubbish customer service

Rubbish customer service. Talked to multiple customer service people and no one gave me the correct answer. Was given a case number that is basically useless when following up. Long wait times and very disappointing service!

Awful

They made it almost impossible to cancel the policy - had to call multiple times before they ceased taking money from my account and they were very reluctant to send a clearance certificate.

Horror story!

I’m going back 10year because that’s exactly how long I’ve been in excruciating pain, and left an invalid!

In January 2016 I went into the new Spire hospital for a procedure on my back. The surgeon Mr Trevedi said that he had performed 100’s of these procedures, all very successful. I was booked in for up to 5 days, but was told that I would most likely be home in less than that. My procedure went horribly wrong, and I was in extreme pain. However, on Mr Trevedi’s instructions I was told to go home the day after the surgery. This I would say was against the concerned nurses advice. It seems that the room I was occupying was required by another patient. I was wheeled from my room, and into a corridor away from reception etc. and by the restroom used by the staff! I guess they didn’t want me to be seen in distress by other patients who were arriving.

Within two months of my surgery I was still unable to walk, let alone try to get upstairs to bed. I called Trevedi who agreed to see me again. I was x-rayed and scanned, and according to the surgeon he said everything was fine. The radiologist however said that a screw, and rod were hitting on a nerve and requiring moving. He reluctantly agreed, and here we 3 months later having to have more surgery! Again the surgeon spoke with me, and said that the procedure went well, although it took longer as the bone had started to grow back, and he had to chip it away.

Move forward a couple of years and again I’m needing surgery, this time under the good old NHS. It turns out that Travedi hadn’t removed al of the bone he chipped at, and now I had a compression of the spinal cord. I thought after that my troubles would be over, but sadly it wasn’t to be. The metal work used by Trevedi was beginning to fail, so once again I required surgery.

As I said 10years on I can hardly walk, I cannot bend, and I’m forced to live in constant extreme pain. Only good thing about my experience of BUPA was the food. I’m beginning to think that I would have been better off, if the chef rather than Mr Trevedi had operated on me, he couldn’t have done any worse!
