Hays of Horrors
On Monday 22 Sept 2025 I tried to ascertain the current travel exchange rate for the dollar for Hays Selby, N Yorks and it was only listed on their website which was clearly a good rate. I checked their reviews and the only cause for concern was an issue someone had had a few weeks prior. I rang Selby Hays Travel to ask whether they could provide me with £250(GBP) worth of dollars in small denominations of $1 and how much would it cost? I was not informed any change to the website exchange rate of the day but I was informed that it would cost £250 plus pennies and the money would be available on Wednesday, I would receive a telephone call to pick it up. I agreed to go ahead with this. I was contacted that day.
Unfortunately due to health reasons I had to delay this until Friday 26th where my husband collected the money on our behalf. Now here is the problem: he was charged £264 plus pennies for $328 dollars. That was £14 for the privilege of only changing £250 and he did NOT receive a receipt or breakdown of what charges?? they were and what if any percentage of service fee this included? Could it have been charges I asked myself? If it was, it was excessive that we were charged such a high price for such a small amount of money. If so I would not have gone through with this. But what worries me the most is that we did not receive a receipt and it was not counted out in front of my husband. Any business who deals with Finance counts out Money in front of the client to prevent mistakes. Instead the woman gestured that it would be a pain as it was all low denominations. My DH picked up on this and being the man he is thought they were honest. Right.
So within 24hrs I contacted their Head Office, I did not want to go via the local office as they are small and I would end up having an argument with whoever was in charge of he said she said. Like most financial institutions or businesses they tend to record conversations and after I had laid out my concerns suggested they replay the tapes. (Honest Joe that I am) So what did HO do, they forwarded my email to an unamed party at the Selby Shop, who on her return 4 days later, basically called me a liar, stated that the local agents and website rates are different which If I had been in the know or told at point of call and were really low, it was my DH fault for not wanting the money counted in front of him even though the female made a suggestion it would be a pain. There was skeptism as to how an Invoice was not provided but zero explanation and nothing regarding the fact I had now overspent an extra 14 pounds, but tellingly there was no apology, but she did kindly attach A RECEIPT which showed that according to their figures I had been provided with an additional $2. So I asked HO for £10 cheque(minus overpayment) and an apology. Still Waiting Hayes. There organisational Policy and Procedures are a joke and dont think I will be using them in the future. Telling it Like It Was....
