My experience and review of RED driving school
Joining RED as a PDI:
So when your joining RED as a PDI you will be sold a story that is too good to be true. I was told that you can kick start your career as a driving instructor early with the amazing trainee license. (Yay)
They will convince you that this going to be a great way to earn money and that they will give you customers fast if you become a PDI, well unfortunately I was hooked to this web of lies and bought into it and I completely wish I talked to some instructors before I did this or read more online instead of being an excited 24 year old at the time who couldn't believe RED would give me this "amazing" opportunity.
The PDI license shouldn't and isn't for montraie gain its a license for you to get extra training and shouldn't be used to to put as many students onto your books as possible as this restricts your time to study, your teaching styles and what your going to do for your part 3 test. In my experience RED will do the exact opposite to this and cram your diary full of students who don't live anywhere near your local area, for example the first pupil RED tried to give me lived 30 miles away from me.
If you challenge RED about the PDI license not being used to make money, tell them to look at the DVLA website where this is clearly stated.
Business seminar:
When you first sign up to to become a driving instructor with RED you eaither go to RED driving schools business seminar as a PDI or an ADI. The locations are Very limited, when I went on this seminar nearly one year ago, my closest area to attend was Heathrow and I live in Wales Which isn't exactly around the corner. For the actual business seminar it's self I found very long winded and the main topic where how to milk the costumer for as much money as possible by offering them longer lesson even going on to saying that we should try and get students (or customers as RED likes to refer them as) to have lessons lasting as long as 4hours which in my opinion is way too long especially for new a PDI or ADI and especially way too long for the pupil to retain anything useful.
As for joining as a PDI when someone at my business seminar asked should I tell my pupils if I am a PDI or not the two ladies both agreed on a don't ask don't tell policy, which is wrong on so many levels Especially if RED wants to charge £27.50 an hour for a PDI or
A new ADI someone who may not have any real world experience in teaching someone to drive. That's a stupid amount of money for a normal one hour lesson for someone with no experience.
Also not telling students they are paying this amount of money for a PDI? Really? Do you think that is fair I understand that a PDI needs experience but betraying your customers trust by not telling them that you are not sending them an ADI but a PDI come on, that's unprofessional.
Hitting the Road:
When you finish your business seminar it's now time to hit the road with your new PDI license right? Wrong RED like to ring you weekly and give you business talks about how to promote your business and get new pupils. Well when I got my first phone genntalman informed it could take up to six weeks to for you to get your first pupil, I wish I had to wait six weeks to get my first pupil with RED because I had to wait 3 months and 3 weeks for my first pupil, it was because limited postcodes from and was only willing to travel 15 miles max for my lessons, when I was given my original postcodes I had been allocated with RED wanted me to travel upwards of 40 miles one way and 40 miles back but when I spoke to a manager they said it was because they didn't have a lot of instructors in the areas of my allocated postcodes meaning they didn't have a much of a reputation in those areas. The solutions for this was to essentially cold call people who have visited the RED website using data left on the RED website by possible pupils I told them no.
Unfortunately I have to end my review here due to character limits.
My advice avoid RED they ain't special.
Edit: Response to REDs reply your business team told me to take myself off the pupil allocation and close my books, also Alun Hodges (a 3rd party contracter) trained me and supported me while RED didn't support or help. RED didnt train me Alun Hodges did.
Don't trust this company.
