  1. Roofing Contractor

Written by the company

We spent over 10 years understanding how roofs work. Then we figured out a way to simplify quality roof installation at an honest price. Then we found an insanely great manufacturer—the maker of the #1 selling shingle of all time. We are GAF Certified, which allows us to offer superb warranty. And we’re fully insured.

They are con artists

They are con artists. A classic case of bait and switch. I wish I had looked at comments about Smartroof on Yelp sooner.

A rep came to my door as a cold call due to a recent storm in the area and explained to me that my neighbor was eligible to have his roof replaced through his homeowner’s insurance and asked if we were interested in him doing a free inspection. My husband and I discussed and decided to give the guy a call back to have him inspect our roof.

The initial person was friendly and seemed trustworthy. We went through the process and our insurance company approved our home for a new roof, but the experience went downhill from there. The following person I dealt with has been a nightmare. Seemed friendly but provided us with misinformation to entice us to upgrade and even tried to get us to purchase solar shingles by telling us we would get money back (cash money back from the IRS). We looked up the tax code and that was an out and out lie. You can get a credit, as we suspected, but no money back. We weren’t sure if the person was lying purposely or if they were just not well informed/trained but gave him the benefit of the doubt. Now I see he was just a liar out to fatten his commission by any means necessary. After the deal was signed, he would never return any of my calls from that point on. As a consumer roofing is not my business, and we relied on this so-called professional to guide us and give us accurate information to make decisions.

Everything is done virtually with Smartroof, so getting copies of any of the documents was a hassle. I didn't get access to their online portal until yesterday (5/30/23 – a week after the install), even though I requested access several times. The only reason I received access is because when I received the invoice, I had an issue. First, the invoice was just an amount, not broken out so I could even see how they arrived at the amount and when I called and spoke to their accounts receivable person, she was rude and tried to overtalk me. I had to remind her that I was a customer and if she didn't have the patience to listen to my questions and answer them, to please put someone on the phone who did. I eventually received an invoice with the costs broken out, but it did not match what the Project Designer had promised and the way they initially broke out the cost breakdown, it’s confusing if you haven’t gone through this process before so it’s easy to mis-lead you.

The actual roof was completed in one day, but they did not clean up the area well, a lot of debris was left behind. A field supervisor came by and inspected the roof the following day but did not go up on the roof to inspect! Even from the ground she found several areas that required them to come back to fix. It took them a couple days to come back out to fix the issues that were found from the ground, and I did request that someone come out who would go up on the roof and re-inspect the installation but we are still waiting for that to be done.

Now I’m trying to get Smartroof to honor the discount that the Project Designer guaranteed us when he lied to us to entice us to upgrade. I am currently waiting on a call back from the Manager as I type this review. She said she would look into into it and get back with me.

Furthermore, the company is WAYYY overpriced, my other neighbor got his roof replaced with a different company and he paid for it out of pocket (not using his homeowner's insurance) and paid a little more than half of what Smartroof charged us for just the roof.

Needless to say, I am very unhappy and I'm looking into hiring a lawyer to represent my husband and I against these crooks who are trying to take advantage of us.

Awesome experience. They took the stress out of replacing my 20 year old roof. From estimate to post install inspection, the process was relatively seamless and stress-free. The craftsmanship was great and they did a wonderful job answering my questions throughout and ensuring that I was satisfied with the end result. I would definitely work with them again.
