My Experience With Yelp Advertising

My Experience With Yelp Advertising – A Warning for Small Business Owners

I am sharing my experience so other small business owners can make informed decisions before signing up for Yelp advertising services.

I was contacted by a Yelp representative and was assisted with setting up an advertising account. During this process, I provided payment information. However, I was never provided a contract by mail, never received a signed agreement, and, to the best of my knowledge, was never emailed any advertising agreement or terms and conditions.

Yelp offered promotional advertising credits as part of the account setup. During the advertising period, I began receiving messages that I believed were not resulting in legitimate business opportunities. In several instances, messages would be received, but after responding, there was no further communication. This raised concerns for me regarding the quality of the leads being generated.

Because of these concerns, I made the decision to cancel my Yelp advertising account. I have documentation showing that the account was canceled, and Yelp’s own records acknowledge the cancellation date.

Despite the cancellation, I was later charged $863. I disputed the charge and attempted to resolve the matter directly with Yelp. Unfortunately, I was unable to obtain a satisfactory resolution through customer service.

I subsequently filed a complaint with my state’s Attorney General’s office. Yelp responded to the Attorney General’s inquiry, but I remained dissatisfied with the company’s position and explanation regarding the charges.

Throughout this process, I repeatedly requested clarification regarding the basis for the charges and any agreement authorizing them. My concern remains that I was charged after cancellation despite my understanding that the account had already been terminated.

I encourage any small business owner considering Yelp advertising to:

• Carefully review all advertising terms and conditions.
• Request copies of any agreements in writing.
• Save all emails, account records, and cancellation confirmations.
• Monitor billing statements closely.
• Document all communications with representatives.
• Keep records of cancellation dates and account activity.

This post reflects my personal experience and opinions based on my records and interactions. Other business owners may have different experiences. I encourage everyone to conduct their own research and maintain thorough documentation when entering into any advertising agreement.

Business Owner,

A rubbish platform

A rubbish platform that clearly scrapes data which has resulted in our phone number being linked to a business we have absolutely nothing to do with.
No way to effectively contact them and responses sent via their platform go unanswered.
If you are paying for this garbage then I would suggest you stop immediately.

I have total proof that Yelp works…

I have total proof that Yelp works under the table with businesses and takes down negative reviews iff paid so therefore this is a misleading company that takes bribes and gets paid to remove negative reviews from businesses. I have proof recording and state Detective and a private investigator. lawsuit soon to come out against Yelp. Yelp is nothing but a scam that takes money from businesses that pay them well.

Yelp: the conflict‑of‑interest factory

If you’re thinking of trusting Yelp, don’t.

This platform is turned into a pay‑to‑sanitize machine where businesses can BUY THEIR WAY OUT of accountability, and Yelp will bend over backwards to make sure negative reviews disappear.

My review was removed with some generic “conflict of interest” excuse — the same copy‑paste bullshit they use whenever a business waves a check in their face. Meanwhile, the actual conflict of interest is Yelp taking money from the same companies they’re supposed to keep honest.

Yelp isn’t protecting consumers BUT protecting its paying clients.

They’ll find any excuse from “relationship with the business”, to “unclear experience”, to “violates guidelines”, all sort of possible BS which "fits the script".

However when you look all over online, you’ll see the same pattern:
zero‑star reviews vanish, legitimate complaints get buried, and businesses with crap reputations magically sit at 4.5 stars.

And good luck talking to a human.
There is no support, no accountability, no transparency. Just automated messages, dead ends, and a wall of silence while they quietly clean up the reputation of whoever pays them.

Yelp has become exactly what it claims to fight: a platform where money decides the truth.

If you’re anyone with a real experience to share, prepare to be ignored, filtered, or deleted.

Yelp is not a review platform anymore but a a conflict‑of‑interest factory.

Lying Salesman

Pearl Vision Salesman in Brooklyn Center, MN. lied and said a pair of glasses were on back order, only to find out later they were discontinued and no refund available. I advised I did not want the temporary glasses, asked for my money back. "There is nothing we can do, its been over 30 days". A scam

Chewy goes above and beyond.

I recently cancelled my account with Chewy, my 2 old gents are crossing the rainbow bridge tomorrow. yesterday I received a box with 2 painted flat stones in velvet bags and a handwritten card. The stones are painted with their names and flowers, stars, hearts. I have been an autoship customer for many years and have always been treated well by customer service.

Yelp business reviews are a disaster

Yelp business reviews are a disaster. They claim their algorithm dictates which reviews are shown and which are not. However, if do not you buy their ad space they will exclude positive views as “ not recommended “ and include negative reviews only which effects business ratings. When questioned, they simply hide behind their algorithm. Very corrupt company. Example. Soon after turning down their ad campaign, they hid 10 positive reviews resulting in a rating of 4.0 to 2.8.

As a small business owner

As a small business owner, I’m tired of watching Yelp hurt small businesses while claiming to help consumers.

Many of our customers leave genuine 5-star reviews based on their real experiences, yet Yelp hides them as “not recommended.” Meanwhile, businesses are constantly pushed toward expensive advertising packages. It certainly makes you question the system.

A company should not have this much power over a small business’s reputation. One algorithm can bury legitimate customer feedback and impact years of hard work.

In my view, Yelp has become more of a bully than a helpful review platform. Small businesses work too hard to have their reputations controlled by a company that isn’t accountable to the people it affects.

Don’t blindly trust Yelp ratings. Visit businesses yourself, talk to real customers, and make up your own mind.

The Small Business Owner Sales & Aggressive Marketing

I listed my small business on Yelp thinking it would be a helpful free tool, but it has turned into a nightmare. Ever since signing up, I get bombarded with aggressive sales calls and spam emails pushing me to buy overpriced ad credits. Even worse, I tried a 'free trial' for ads and canceled it within 3 days, but they still managed to hit my credit card with unexpected fees. When you try to reach customer service to resolve billing issues, they are dismissive and incredibly rude. Total waste of time and money for small business owners.

Yelp and similar platforms simply take…

Yelp and similar platforms simply take money from contractors without delivering any results. Don't expect help from Yelp—it’s pointless. You could spend your last dime and end up with nothing; that is an undeniable fact. I stopped using Yelp three years ago—canceling payments and leaving the platform—which resulted in a total loss of funds. Nevertheless, the damage done to my company could still be rectified if someone from Yelp's management reads this review. Please set things right before it’s too late; as a human being, I just want you to resolve this issue!

Yelp is a quid pro quo organization

Yelp is a quid pro quo organization. If you don't know what that means, try pay-to-play. I was an early believer in Yelp when they were operating out of a house. They could care less about people anymore, specifically Americans with Disabilities. I wrote a 1* review about "Appliance Repair Expert" that they don't have a way to communicate with the deaf or mute. I'm a legitimate Yelper with 176 reviews. It would be nice to post the texts this guy sent. You would be shocked. Meh. I'll let my attorneys sort this out.

In my experience, the review filtering punishes small businesses

I am writing this as a small business owner sharing my own experience and opinion.

My page has two 1-star reviews showing publicly, while around twenty-five 5-star reviews are hidden in the "not recommended" section. I disputed both 1-star reviews. One was for the wrong business entirely. The other contained an accusation I know to be untrue, and the reviewer's profile matched the characteristics Yelp itself describes as signs of a fake account. I submitted both disputes with that context. Neither was removed.

In my opinion, it makes no sense that the two negative reviews stay up while two dozen genuine positive ones are filtered out of sight. Based on my own experience, it is hard not to feel the system is built to keep small businesses anxious about their rating and open to paying for advertising. That is my honest read of it.

My experience with Yelp's sales team was also poor. I found the calls aggressive and high pressure.

One more thing every owner should know. In my experience you cannot remove or delete your business profile once it exists. You are tied to it whether you want to be or not. In my opinion that is the most troubling part, because it leaves you with no way out and no leverage. It feels like being held in place against your will.

This is my personal opinion based on what happened to me. I would not recommend any business owner create a Yelp profile, because once it is there you cannot take it down. I think Yelp's practices work against small business owners, and I want other owners to know they are not imagining it.

As a Small business owner

If I have the option I would give them -10 star review. They simply bully and annoy the small businesses to increase their ads sales. Plus hide the good reviews. Simply charges alot more than extra without permission. Absolutely trash. I called them few times today. Nobody is listening and hanging up in the middle without solving our problem. I would never recommend it. And fully waste of money. They even try to control your messages and calls with the potential leads or clients. Fake system for making money. "" SCAMMERS"
