Made my 2012 Dell XPS 13 useful again

I have a Dell XPS 13 circa 2012 (4GB memory) that was becoming a fire hazard running Windows 10. The fan ran continuously, it was too hot to use as a laptop, and could hardly do anything with the CPUs pegged. I decided to try Ubuntu Desktop 20.04. It installed effortlessly (thanks to Rufus), and provided all the fundamental features I wanted. Now the System Monitor shows the CPUs running in single digits, and the laptop seems new again. I am delighted with the experience!

I love love love Ubuntu!

I love love love Ubuntu!

Contrary to popular believe though, Linux is not for everyone.

You need to put a lot of time into Linux and you WILL love it. If you are not down for a massive investment of time, don't bother.

Amazing

Amazing. I wish I had switched to Linux and Ubuntu years ago.

You need a bit of technological confidence to transition and set up. I managed it. Installation of hardware like an external WiFi receiver on an old desktop is tricky.

But now everything is set up, I'm delighted. Its fast. Things like Dropbox work far better then on windows 10. No need for viral software. Free installation.

The only people that need Windows are if you use full spec office software. I use find the free software a bit naff, but now, they are actually pretty good for spreadsheets and word. My hyperlinks all transitioned over well!

Enjoy that its debian based

Enjoy that its debian based, but never a fan of GNOME and Unity was ridiculous. Its an overweight build, albiet with a friendlier community than some distros.

I'm having a bad experience

I'm having a bad experience, will change my review if I can get it resolved. I am not able to connect to the internet and the company won't help me for free since it's a free app. They refer me to forums where I get different answers and don't want to hack it up, so its useless. Now I don't even know how to remove it. Waste of time. Very frustrated.

Easy to install alongside Windows or to replace it.

I have used Ubuntu for 10 years, I use Windows too, but find Linux usually more straightforward and generally less of a pain (for example updates do not influence the time it takes to shut down or start the computer).
The current Ubuntu 18.04 LTS has issues for some users with the Gnome 3 desktop environment gradually eating up RAM, if you have this problem it can be avoided by changing the .display manager to "light DM" (easily done - google it).
Things do sometimes go wrong, as they do with windows, but as long as you google the problem you will find the solution,
I suggest you download it from the Ubunttu site with a torrent as that way the file is checked as you download it (i.e. not corrupted) Then google "what to do after you install Ubuntu" for advice on setting things up.

Absolutely fantastic OS

Absolutely fantastic OS, I've loved the Mint distribution for a long time, but that seems to be dying and becoming increasingly unstable.

The OS for the most part is solid, and better than any Windows desktop environment that's for sure. The ONLY reason it didn't get 5 stars is because the searches and diagnostic content/logs sent to conanical often by default is a little instrusive and you need to know what to look out for, other than that it's superb!

A satisfied patient!

I have been very impressed with Sandhyu's care and attention to my contact lenses requirements. I used to go to a large corporate optical practice but felt that their availability of their choice in lenses was restrictive . Over the past few months, I felt that my eyes needed the full attention of a contact lens specialist . Sandhyu , who is a highly, qualified optometrist and contact lens practitioner, was able to give me the correction that has improved the quality of vision for all aspects of my work including the use of computer. She was unstinting in her efforts in getting the visual requirements I need. This included several appointments and a number of trial lenses until we were satisfied.. One , very happy patient!

The Light Behind the Curtain

No company is perfect, but I believe the balance tips to the side of good for Canonical. Although they have been involved in some controversy, I believe the justifications that Canonical has given have always been rational. Linux has always been the operating system behind the curtains of what consumers see due to a lack of awareness. I think that Ubuntu, although not perfect, is for many the light shining though the curtain to introduce them to something new and exciting. Thank you to Canonical for their excellent product Ubuntu, and may they continue to set forth the path ahead!

Ubuntu. The Sensible Choice.

I'm now using Ubuntu 18.04 on my PC as the sole operating system. Not only is it free to download, there are also plenty of free apps and games available, it's extremely stable, suffers from no irritating pauses or unexpected crashes, has no peripheral issues, and has a clean attractive interface. It’s a pleasure to use on a daily basis. It never strains, it never annoys.

Microsoft Windows has become bloated, bug ridden, difficult to use, and suffers from peripheral issues, especially in the latest edition Windows 10. Using it was becoming unbearable. It’s an over engineered piece of software with more unnecessary features added to each new edition that’s released. I think Bill Gate’s baby peaked at Windows 7, and it’s gone downhill ever since.

I would advise anyone to make the change today - you won’t regret it.

One of the best-Un des meilleurs SE-OS …

One of the best-Un des meilleurs SE-OS (Système d'exploitation-Operating System):

1- privacy is respected(not like Windows)
2- stability is here
3- speed
4- a lot of applications
5- open source

Conclusion: on ANY PC, Ubuntu or Debian should be installed by default, not this Windows that is polluting pcs world and make pcs vulnerable, like zombies pcs. Windows is the most used OS JUST because it is installed by default, everybody knows that and Microsoft has been condemned by the European Union for abuse of monopolistic position.
