I gave the RTL12 tyre levers a good test with my sturdy Mavic MA40 wheels fitted with wired Continental Grand Prix tyres which I use on my winter road bike. I was a little concerned at first, as I have snapped many plastic levers on these rims over the years and eventually resorting to rim damaging steel levers.
Firstly I was impressed with the lightness and compactness of them. They had a very comfortable feel in the hand even at max leverage. They managed to locate the wire bead and with the hook end slipping under it effortlessly it soon had it popping over the rim. This then allowed room for the next lever to be inserted and it smoothly slid along the rim edge removing the tyre. Nice little addition which I liked was the magnetic buttons fitted which kept the lever close at hand whilst sitting against the spoke. The next test was refitting the of tyre, which often is quite fraught with the likelihood of a pinch puncture. With the smooth shape this didn’t prove a problem and I managed to resit the tyre in one action. In conclusion, these light, tough levers proved their worth against tested rims. I might add that this was done on a workbench and the big test will be on the road with cold hands….watch this space.
