BE AWARE OF THIS COMPANY!

BE AWARE OF THIS COMPANY!! This Rental Company Charged Us Cat Rent Illegally For Two Years!!

My wife and I signed a monthly lease agreement with State Street in July 2019. We were informed directly during the signing process that we would be required to pay an additional $25 per month for each cat we owned. Due to the fact that we have two adorable cats, the additional payment was $50 per month. The State Street representative even took the time to jot down the names of our cats.

Unfortunately, after renting the property for 25 months, we realized that charging cat rent is a criminal offence under the Residential Tenancies Act.

When we notified State Street and sought a refund, the following comment was received from State Street: "At State Street, we do not charge a pet fee. Rent is only changed via rental increases which increase the rent on the unit to better reflect the market rent based on comparable units in the city. There may have been a pet fee in the past but this was corrected and any increased rent was made to reflect the market rent of the unit. "

This is factually incorrect. Our rent was maintained at the same level until July 2020, when it was increased by $25. The total overcharge was $1,250, and the situation has not been resolved.
