Good equipment & service, but a big company with overly complicated systems (telephone, web, et al.)

I have requested sevral times for a quote on MEWPS and had no response. The first quote I received was from their supplier with a ridiculous quote.
The person who is responsible for the quote is Jack Mc Clafferty. Myoriginal request dated 29/04/2026. On 30/04/2026 I requested him to amend the quote. On 11/05/2026 I requested again for a new quote. I sent a last mail on 19/05/2026. On the website Speedy displays certain models and heights of wich I selected two for long term rentals. Nobody responds from the mail address.
I can not attach the mail or a screen shot a reference number is CRM003692000373

I used HSS/Speedyhire for a vibrating plate and at the checkout a pop up recommendation for ‘fuel - petrol can - 5ltrs’ came up, thinking it was fuel for the plate, I ordered it for easy. I was wrong it was empty, I called customer service to say it was empty, they explained it was just the can, my misunderstanding, and asked if I could return it as it was £13:00, they said it would be picked up with the plate, well it wasn’t, since then I have been passed everywhere and 4 different calls and people, which none noted the conversation, to being asked to send a picture of the can on email, and surprise not hearing anymore, contacted them again, 5th time, 11 days later and again no one knows nothing about it?? You will struggle to get any money owed back, such a disappointment, this was HSS on behalf of speedy hire

Terrible service, huge waste of time and money
I ordered a wacker plate online 3 days before the intended delivery. I was first told it would arrive on Friday morning between 7am and 12pm. I took the day off work to be there, and my builder arrived at midday ready to start work – but there was no sign of the delivery at all. My builder waited for 2 hours before having to leave, and I still had to pay him for his wasted time.
When I called to check, they admitted they’d made a mistake and said delivery would now be between 12pm and 7pm. I chased them countless times through the day, only to be told at the very end: “we are very sorry, we can’t deliver it today at all”.
This was completely unacceptable. I cancelled the order straight away. They wasted my entire day, I lost a day’s pay from work, and I was left out of pocket paying a builder for work he couldn’t even do. No proper apology, no solution offered – just empty promises and total disorganisation. I definitely won’t be using Speedy Hire again, and I’d warn anyone else

Speedy Hire must be the most ironic name choice imaginable, for this pathetic joke of a business.
They are not speedy and they do not actually seem to have any tools available for hire, when people want them.
When you call them, expect to wait at least 40 minute for someone to finally take your call and then the real disappointment begins.
I have tried to hire a nail gun on 2 occassions and been let down both time. First attempt was to arrange for sameday or next day delivery (Speedy - I think not) and the second attempt allowed 2 days prior to delivery (not even quick - how about 5 days after the job is meant to be completed).
Utterly pointless company. Now that I have read the reviews here, it seems like this is not a surprise. It is likley to be easier and more cost effective to buy a tool and sell after use.
Contact me if you want to buy a used Nail Gun, so that you have at least 1 that someone could hire, if they have the patience to wait on your phone lines.
In summary, they are unable to deliver on their sole business purpose, there is clearly no investment in equipment or enough people to run the business. No wonder this is a failing enterprise.
The people I have spoken to on the phone have been nice and it seems they are used to dealing with unhappy customers. I wish all the employees well, for when the envitable happens.

Ordered a breaker on friday the 8th of may, used for the first time on same day, machine works fine, only problem being it leaks oil all over the place all on my grass where i layed it down and also on my paving slabs, not very happy, this breaker clearly needs a oil seal, which should have been flagged up before it was sent out on hire again, it has also leaked all over my garage floor, really poor maintainance especially for the price i paid, with the deposit included is bordering on extortionate!
Won't be useing them again!

Hired from london road depot derby!

No communication at all. Turf cutter due for delivery today, had a text at 2:30pm to say the driver was on route. It’s now 8:30pm and still no delivery, no updates to say why it was delayed, and no answer when attempting to get through to the out of hours phone number. Item is hired for 3 days, so we’re already out 33% of the allotted time. I’m sure they wouldn’t be happy if we decided to not underpay by 33%, yet are perfectly fine not holding up their end. Joke of a company.

Wow Never again. Account Now Closed !!
As a first time user of Speedy Hire, I hired some equipment for what I thought was just 1 week.
Booked online with a start date and paid my 1 weeks hire rate.
I did the job and expected the equipment to be collected from our customer later that week.
Two weeks later the customer told me the equipment was still on site. Looked at Speedy Hires web site and found that I had to request collection.
I was then charged for 3 weeks hire, when I only used the equipment for 1 day.
They want even consider a refund even though I need to order this twice a year from now on.
Beware of this TRAP !!

After a bit of a ropey start, I.e phoning the contact centre, while lovely as they are, seemed to struggle to find basic information, along with the skip being placed too close to the garage door where I couldn’t access where I needed, they were quick to sort that issue out and when I needed it collecting before the end of the allotted time they came and got it with no bother

Went to hire a stone cutter ( Carlisle ) Friday 4;30
The customer service was very poor , no smiles or helpful conversation from the 3 members of staff who seemed fed up and just seemed they wanted to get home asap.
No paperwork was given or forwarded to my email regarding breakdown of costs (£174) to hire from Friday to Monday.
I will not be using this company ever again.

Booked a weekend rotovator hire starting Friday 27th March, sounds simple enough, what could possibly go wrong. Well to start they tried to deliver on Tuesday 17th. I phoned and they apologised and assured me it will still arrive on the 27th - it didn't. I phoned again to rearrange and settled on the 16th of April, but at 4pm I was on the phone chasing again. They called the Norwich depot who said it was out for the following day ie. the 17th. No problem so long as I have it for the weekend. 4pm on 17th I'm back on the phone chasing my rotovator, they again phoned Norwich to be told they had no idea it was out for today ! So somebodies telling porkies. To err is human. To do it twice is incompetence. 3 is completely stupid and 4 just beggars belief. I have cancelled the order. I am very angry.

If you’re ever considering working for Speedy, maybe think again.
The company itself breaks their own company policy - embarrassing for a company who has such a big reputation
I was dealing with mental health struggles and medical conditions like endometriosis, which affected my timekeeping. None of that was properly taken into account—there was no real support, just discipline.
I was signed off due to work-related stress, depression and anxiety. My return-to-work “welfare” meeting was handled as a disciplinary discussion, with no meaningful support offered.
At the same time, there was clear favouritism. Management had family members working under them, and the difference in treatment compared to the rest of us was obvious.
It felt like there was one rule for them, and another for everyone else.
Small, minor things were constantly picked apart and built up into something much bigger, creating pressure and making me feel targeted.
I was taken into disciplinary meetings with multiple accusations—only for several of them to be dropped later because they couldn’t be proven.
Being accused of things without evidence, then having them quietly dismissed, says a lot about how things were handled.
The whole experience felt unfair, inconsistent, and honestly exhausting.
There’s a lot more I could say, but this is just part of what working there was like.
No one should feel unsupported or treated differently at work—especially when dealing with real health issues.
Shocking customer service allowed me to book a compressor online only to find out 2 days later that they no longer hire those compressors. I booked another unit for local collection on the day I wanted. No one confirmed the collection address until the day of delivery, I then find out that the collection address is in Birmingham! 3 hours away

Placed an order to hire equipment and I had to call to find out when it was going to be delivered. Got given a new order number, put through to Leeds who said they don’t have any in stock and neither does the company.
I’ve had to order through B&Q, which hire the equipment through Speedy Hire. I placed my order on Tuesday and then on Wednesday I was told Friday is the earliest delivery. What happened to the “Speedy” delivery??
I’m now trying to find out what time the 4 hour slot is on Friday but they won’t tell me because they “can’t until the day” which is really inconvenient. I hate being messed around and having my time off work being wasted going backwards and forwards for what really should be a straight forward delivery.
The Leeds branch staff were really pleasant - I cannot fault them, but the general organisation of this company is just shocking.

I hired a turf cutter and rotavator for a weekend from Speedy Hire using B&Q's platform. Speedy Hire delivered the machines with minimal petrol (despite promising that petrol was included) so I had to go to the garage to buy more. When the weekend was over, Speedy Hire didn't collect the equipment on Monday as promised, and didn't even contact me to tell me what was going on. It took a phone call to customer services, then following up with a formal complaint, to get them to pick up the equipment. They left it at my house for more than a week longer than originally promised! What a chaotic, annoying experience.

I ordered a floor sander from B&Q, they use Speedy Hire who should have contacted me 24hrs before delivery, which they didnt. I contacted then only to be told my delivery had been put back 2 days. I again contacted Speedy hire and was told the delivery would be made between 0800hrs and 1000hrs, it wasnt, I contacted them again only be told delivery would now be between 1300hrs and 1600hrs, it wasnt. When i contacted them again, I was told they could deliver until 07/04/26. I contacted B&Q and cancelled the order. DONT USE EITHER OF THEM i gave them one star because I couldnt give them ZERO stars.

Lack of transparency on charges and charge you an additional 21£ for pickup that they don’t disclose. It’s deducted from your 100£ refundable deposit.
Edit: Speedy Hire response showcases yet again that they do not take responsibility for their lack of transparancy regarding pricing. Sharing below the breakdown they share when confirming the offer. As you can see, it says 100GBP refundable deposit and a charge for delivery, therefore I find it hard to believe that this clearly describes an additional 21GBP will be removed for returning the machine via their service.
Total Hire Value EX VAT £70.66
Total Speedy Shield £7.07
Fuel Charge £3.80
Delivery £17.50
VAT £19.81
Sub-total £118.84
Refundable deposit £100.00

Telephoned to ask what the price of hire is for a cement mixer at 4:30pm. Spent last half hour of my working day phoning. I was requested to additionally, go online and set up/create an online account, verifiy with email, QR code to submit drivers licence as proof of ID, completed account form, completed email with ID, Speedy Hire confirm receipt of everything, advisor on phone explains they don't have access to email at their end, emails have to go to a Manager for a Manager to divvy up all the emails between employees for them to even begin looking for a cement mixer. I asked when I could find out A) how much weekly hire is and B) how much delivery charge is for drop-off and collection. Advisor advises someone will email back one day, some day, but unsure which day. I commented that it's hardly 'speedy'. Advisor advises me I've received my first warning for termination of the call altogether. Needless to say, we got the information from a competitor within 3 minutes and hired from them instead. Sort yourselves out please.
Wat a nightmare of a place , cowboy staff , lies upon lies , extra charges, then having to wait 3/4 working days for deposit back , I would strongly advise everyone to stay well clear of this place

Terrible, absolutely terrible. The West London branch is one of the worst depots I’ve had to deal with. I can never get hold of anyone and end up being left on hold for over 10 minutes.
When equipment is due to be collected, there’s never a clear ETA, and even when a date is provided, it’s rarely followed through. As a result, the lads on site are left waiting and working overtime unnecessarily.
In contrast, the Kings Cross depot has been extremely helpful especially Matt, who has gone out of his way to arrange off-hiring equipment, even from other depots. Going forward, I’ll be avoiding the West London depot and contacting Kings Cross instead, as they’ve proven far more reliable for handling off-hires in the NW London area.

We hired an industrial vacuum cleaner to clean our new property. The customer service provided by Zoe and Ed in the Eastleigh office was really outstanding. They went above and beyond to provide advice and to make sure we were able to take delivery of the vacuum after we failed to get it into our car. Their help was really appreciated.
