Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 1,753 reviews, most reviewers were somewhat happy with their experience overall. Customers frequently praise the friendly, helpful, and efficient staff, often noting their positive interactions during pick-up and drop-off processes. Reviewers appreciate the smooth and quick service, with many finding the car collection and return straightforward. The vehicles themselves are often described as being in good condition, clean, and reliable, sometimes even receiving free upgrades. However, some people were dissatisfied with unexpected charges, such as additional insurance fees or 'Island Hopper Fees', which significantly increased the final price. Some reviewers also reported issues with staff being unprofessional, particularly regarding insurance sales. Additionally, a few customers experienced problems with being charged for pre-existing damage or questionable damage claims upon return.

Poor service and theft

I book for a 10am collect then when I arrived I was told it was 12. I booked online in advance and paid extra for the fully comp insurance. When I arrived I was told I’m not insured and I need to pay 200 deposit, of which I still haven’t had back and more importantly I had to pay for insurance of 210. I didn’t argue about this I was on an urgent trip to see my dying father.
Really poor service and I actually feel like I’ve been robed of 410 pounds. I’ve tried to raise a complaint but it hasn’t gone anywhere and no one has responded.

I hired a Sixt car from Edinburgh for 11 days, returning it half a day early for my own convenience.

I hired a Sixt car from Edinburgh for ten days, returning it to the same office. Being located under a shopping mall, the centre was hard to find both for a pedestrian and when returning the car but Sixt instructions were fairly detailed & accurate. On arrival, the agent told me I was getting a bit of a discount for being a returning customer, which was nice as I’ve always found it impossible to formerly register as a Sixt customer, but he reassured me that they do recognise me. He went on to fully describe the two grades of cars available to me that day, the payment process, holding fee routine and options for excess reduction. Being seriously unused to modern cars I also asked him to spend some time demonstrating the most important features of the car, which he did with admirable patience. As it was I didn’t attempt to deal with the excessive number of controls on the screen or steering wheel for fear of provoking unnecessary music that couldn’t be turned off, which was fine as nothing there seemed to be needed anyway (although unfortunately a couple of times during the rental period the heating seemed to come on spontaneously, which was distressing on hot days but went off again after some time with all the windows open.) The agent had said I could call him - or the branch, I’m not sure which - if I needed help along the way but I didn’t do this. One brilliant thing at pickup the agent did for me was, with the help of some plugs & wires I happened to have in my luggage, set up in-car recharging ability for my antique phone, which I really appreciated. The BMW car itself was nice to drive, in perfect condition and refuelling was easy. On return, a helpful agent had time to inspect the car & finalise my rental on the spot. The two best things about the whole rental experience was the first staff member’s friendliness & readiness to explain everything about the rental conditions and especially about the car controls. The other fantastic thing was the usual Sixt predictability of the total final cost: no unexpected little fees - and as usual the temporary holding (security) fee never appeared on my bank account. At the moment I don’t see any reason to ever try any other rental company.

cheaters and liars!

Im very disappointed with this company. I initally wrote a glowing review as we thought the customer service at counter was very helpful n informative. Upon receiving my final bill, we noticed that he charged us for the "free" upgrade! when we were at the counter, he asked us how many people would be in the car, and i said, on our return journey, there would be 4 with 1 or 2 larger luggages.. So he said, oh, let me give you a better car than what you booked! Now, i'm very familiar with car rentals n he said we would do us a favour by giving us a bigger car. He searched around n came up with a nissan xtrail, i said this too big, so he searched again n offered us a mercedes 4wd. and he said, this would be better for u. We were like great, a free upgrade! he smiled and proceeded to get on with the paperwork. I asked him to explain what i'm signing as we're all aware, the prints are small and it's multiple pages. I had insurance, so i knew that if something went wrong, i would be fully covered. So he explained that i should select fuel return empty as their fuel rates are cheaper than outside. I agreed. He then explained that if i went w the auto toll charges, it's more convenient. And I agreed. There was NO mention about the additional rental rates because he's upgraded us. i was with a friend and when i got my final bill with the additional cost of the upgrade, i asked my friend.. did u hear anything about being charged for the upgrade??? No, neither of us heard this. And when i dispute this with SIXT, ofcourse, i signed the paperwork, therefore i will be charged for it.
well, never again will i use them! And i can see fr the reviews here that they are unscrupulous! i dont usually write bad reviews but i feel cheated n i wished i had held back with my good reviews till i got my bill! I even thanked customer service for the FREE upgrade! why didnt he correct me n said, oh no maam.. your upgrade is not free!

9-month subscriber promised a refund in writing – never paid, no response for two weeks

Sixt+ subscriber for 9 months, on my third rental. On 8 June 2026 my Volvo XC60 had a blown tyre near Chipping Norton with my two young children in the car. Roadside assistance left us stranded for over five hours with repeatedly broken promises; what eventually arrived was a recovery truck, not the tyre repair I'd been told to expect. I paid around £215 for my own taxi and got home at 01:30; my child missed a school exam the next day.
Sixt apologised and confirmed in writing on 12 June that my taxi cost would be refunded within 7–10 working days. The only thing they have actually done is refund the price difference for downgrading me to a Q3 I never asked for – which was simply correcting an overcharge, not compensation. As of today nothing else is resolved: the taxi has not been paid (no link, no funds), I am still in the downgraded car, every email asking when I'll get the XC60 back has been ignored (15, 18, 19, 23, 25 June), and no compensation has been offered for the ordeal. After 9 months as a customer, a written promise broken and total silence is unacceptable.

I have both a corporate and personal…

I have both a corporate and personal silver account with Sixth. I come online to book a car tonight and it is almost 6x what I paid less than a month ago. £197 is the cheapest car the V40 I had for £54 a day is now £276. what is the point inn having loyalty schemes if you don't offer consistent pricing. This is a company that would rather its cars sat idle than let out.

Excellent service

As before, at Schiphol Amsterdam airport, I received very good service, both at the counter and at the collection point.
Friendly, efficient staff, a car that was spotless and came with a safety hammer, a blue parking disk (necessary for some areas in the Netherlands) and a car safety/service pack. 10 out of 10 as far as I’m concerned. What I like about Sixt in Amsterdam is the scanner. You take the car through on the way out, and in on the way back. An honest way to detect damage. The competition across the hall at Schiphol (first letter ‘H’) could take a leaf out of Sixt’s book.

Why is it hard to find a decent car hire company?

I go to UK ex Australia every year and in the past have used some of the cheaper car rental companies. Had issues every time, mostly with made up "damage" that they found after I have dropped it off and left. So last year I decide to go with a slightly more reputable company and used Sixt. Has no big troubles last year other than extra money for their usual upgrades, so this year I used them again. They have let me down. Firstly they upgraded me (at extra expense) as I needed a sat nav. That was fine but when I picked the car up it had rubbish ex last driver in it. Not much but I questioned it if had been inspected. Then when I dropped it off there was no-one there (at Heathrow) to check it so I took the keys into the terminal and left them with the desk staff. A day or so later I got a "damage report" showing a 7 cm scratch. I don't recall any scratch but it is very minor. I now have a bill for 500 odd pounds, probably covered by my travel insurance. So they have done precisely what the other more dodgy companies did. I am disappointed and cross that the car hire part of each trip seems to be the hardest. My tip is to check your car with a fine tooth comb and make sure any damage is detailed before you accept it. Then make sure you check it over with a returns person when you take it back. It should not be this hard should it?

READ THIS PLEASE...

I went to pick up a car at the caledonian road branch, London. I had booked a large saloon car with a large boot as I needed to put in three cases and a wheelchair for a holiday with my elderly mother and one other person. My booking was for a car with MANUAL transmission.

The rep then told me he did not have a car for me. No apology, or genuine attempt to resolve this, just tells me that it happens all the time.

I was in disbelief. All he offered as an alternative was a small car with manual transmission which would have been impossible as it was not big enough for three suitcases and wheelchair.

I asked him if he could ask another local sixt office if a car was available and he tried to do that. I then asked him why he had not attempted to do that without me suggesting this and he just smiled.

After speaking to the Bloomsbury branch of sixt he told me I could go there and and they would have a car for me.

I then asked what would happen with the congestion charge as Bloomsbury is in that zone. He said sixt would pay this. When I got there they said this was not true, they would pay on the day I took the car but not on my return nor at any other time.

When I got to the Bloomsbury sixt office it was located in an underground car park and the gate was locked. On the gate was a hand written piece of paper with the sixt phone number. I repeatedly phoned and there was no answer. An NCP security guard then started to interrogate me as he thought I was an intruder. Eventually he asked to see my booking email even though he did not work for sixt, and finally he let me through the metal gate.

As I approached the sixt office I saw the representative talking to a customer beside a car. She had not been in the office and that is why she had not answered the phone.

The rep told me she did not have a car for me either. When I asked her why, she did not know and blamed it on a manager.

At that point another customer entered the office and they were also upset, describing the van they had been given as filthy and that the vehicle juddered all the way down the motorway on their return to the sixt office.

The rep then told me there were no mid or large sized cars with MANUAL transmission in London. She offered to drive me to the Marylebone branch for me to look at an automatic car they said had a big boot.

I had only driven an automatic once about twenty years ago but was at this point desperate to try this due to the booked holiday.

The manager of the Marylebone branch told me that the caledonian road branch should have had a manager on site but had not had one for several weeks and my personal opinion is that this was what had caused all the problems.

The manager then offered to drive me back to the caledonian road branch as they had a large manual SUV with manual transmission which they said may be suitable.

It is interesting that this was not offered to me when I had been in that branch four hours before.

This entire process of travelling between three different sixt branches took up four hours of my time. By the time I had my car it was rushhour which added another 1.5 travel time to my trip.

On the trip one of the tyres seemed a bit low and I raised the pressure a bit at a service station. Opening the boot I saw that there was no spare tyre so if the tyre had burst I may have been stranded in the remote location I was driving to. I made a complaint about that and took a photo of this..

Basically this was a horror story and I have never experienced anything like it in the 30 or so times I have hired a car in the past.

It ruined the first part of my holiday as I was so upset and in the back of my mind I no longer trusted sixt and worried about what else they would do.

I am able to verify that this is what happened if Trustpilot require this verification. My booking number is attached.

I am NOT in the habit of writing…

I am NOT in the habit of writing reviews, but this is one that I could not ignore.
Having rented with Sixt many times I have always been very satisfied with their service.
This time was the exception.
The rental pickup was at 11.30pm. At no time, in any of the paperwork I received, or in their online information was it mentioned about 'out of hours' car pickup. I therefore naturally assumed that they operated a 24/7 service.
My flight was delayed by 45 minutes, so I didn't reach the car rental village in Manchester until 00.20am.
The reception desk was empty. I checked my emails for any messages from Sixt. Nothing. I checked at the reception desk for any messages/contact details. Nothing.
So I telephoned Sixt from a number I obtained online. I was connected to an american guy who was horrified at my situation, but unfortunately couldn't do anything about it. So he tried to connect me to the 'Level 2' of customer service, but there was no reply.
So there I was, a partially disabled 73 year old, stranded at Manchester car rental village at 1am.
I endured a very painful 6 hour wait on seats not designed for any level of comfort.
Finally, at 6.30am, the Sixt desk was manned by a guy who informed me that my reservation had been cancelled at 2.30am that morning, and that my reserved car had been rented to someone else at 3.30am that morning.
I asked how was this possible as I had been waiting here since 00.20am and the place had remained deserted.
He informed me that the car had been collected via the 'drop box' key system. I asked him when were the keys deposited into the drop box and he replied, when the booking was made at 3.30am.
This was obviously a total lie as I had been there the whole time.
Ok, shit happens, I get that. So I asked for another car.
He informed me that there were no other cars available for the £90 previous price, but he could offer me another car for £460.
Needless to say I politely informed him where he could place this car.
I went to the Enterprise Car Rental desk. The lady at the desk said that she couldn't help but overhear what had been said. She said that this happens all the time with that company and that they are always the first to leave in the evening.
She matched the original price that I had contracted to.
As a businessman myself I fully understand that company policy is usually abundantly clear on what SHOULD happen. Unfortunately, company employees don't necessarily conform to them.

Like others I feel mislead and scammed…

Like others I feel mislead and scammed by this company. I have hired from Heathrow for over 10 years and by far this is the most expensive due to unclear and unexpected costs compared to competitors. As an example all other car hire companies I have used in the past includes a basic insurance with large excess. SIXT does not and therefore it ends up much more expensive which you find out on the day! It's now too late to get a good price from another company. You also have a Premium Location Fee which is percentage based so by adding the basic insurance and buying petrol you pay 21% on top of these extras! Unbelievable and again it's not highlighted to you. I only realised studying the details later. Lesson learnt and I will never use this company again anywhere.

Keep well away

Keep well away

Have used this company for several years. Not sure whats happened but this time although pre booked on line and paid for we still had to queue and wait for an employee to give us the keys after they tried in vain to upgrade us doubling the agreement cost. This is something you do not want after a 20hr flight. Everything on line even in the office
Staff asked me to ammend our hire on line but we have no internet then we have to use sixts internet which kept dropping out absolutly crap service in 2026
Staff could not see any info discussed when you book car. Tried to extend the car for another three weeks only offered 2 days extra as nothing availiable.
Went to another company welcomed with open arms spent another 3k. Spent Poor service on sixt part will not be back unless it changes back to how it was.

SIXT UK does not acknowledge website errors and upsells

SIXT is a terrible company. They are unclear about their young driver fees on their websites (for example, a page on their website says driver fees are only charged for under 23 in Great Britain which is incorrect). The counter tried to upsell us on so many things, including the car type, saying smaller cars were unsuitable for the Highlands even though we saw plenty of them on our trip. They also did not mention young driver fees at all. Do not rent from SIXT Edinburgh, or SIXT in general, as they will not acknowledge their information is incorrect online either in follow-ups.

Unfortunately many people only go on Trustpilot to give bad reviews. The numerous satisfied customers often don't bother to review

Thank you, Niamh!

I’ve had many flawless rentals with Sixt in the past, but my experience this time around was highly mixed. The main reason I am writing this review is to give massive praise to Niamh from the Tyre department, who turned a distressing and dangerous situation into one where I felt completely supported.

I picked up my car from the London Marylebone branch on Sunday 21/06. While a windscreen chip and rim scratches were already noted on the report, it wasn't until I parked at my first destination (just 4 miles away) that I noticed a huge chunk of rubber missing from the front passenger tyre. I immediately sent a photo to a mechanic friend, who warned me that driving on it at high speeds would be incredibly dangerous. This was a major safety issue, as I was about to start a 2.5-hour motorway journey.

Frankly, it is deeply concerning that the car was released in this condition; it felt negligent on the garage’s part to miss such a critical safety hazard during their checks.

When I contacted Sixt, I was put through to Niamh in the Tyre department. She was incredibly patient, pragmatic, and supportive. After speaking with her manager, she advised that because of the existing rim damage, a simple tyre change wasn't the best route, but instead I should return to the garage for a vehicle exchange.
When I got back to the branch, the colleague on duty was initially quite hesitant to issue an exchange. Without Niamh’s clear advice giving me the confidence to stand my ground, I might not have had the courage to insist on a replacement. However, I do want to credit the garage colleague: once she realised how genuinely distressed I was, her demeanour completely changed. She became highly understanding, helpful, and ultimately sorted out the exchange car, which I was very grateful for.

While the initial vehicle oversight was unacceptable, Niamh is an absolute asset to Sixt and completely saved the day. Thank you, Niamh! If there is a customer service representative who looks at these reviews, I would really appreciate if you could reach out to me as I would love to send Niamh a small token of my appreciation.
