My experience using share builder 401k…

My experience using share builder 401k was absolutely horrible. They only put your money in certain ETF / mutual funds that are small cap and the diversification is horrible I would go with a more notable retirement company like Schwab, vanguard, Fidelity do not use these guys total waste of time and money

This company is a fraud I purchased…

I had and issue with this company when I had sign up no one told me it wouldn’t fully integrate with my payroll. I spoke with the customer service manager whose name is Gabriel and I help me take care of closing my account. Am not currently with them anymore but I think they are a decent company because they fixed the issue I was having and so if you don’t have any issue with their company integrated in your payroll I would still work with them based off the conflict, resolution skills of their customer service agent

Hi there, we’re sorry to hear about your experience and understand your frustration. Our team disclosed compatibility details on which ADP offerings we integrate with (and which we don’t) during onboarding with our vendor Ascensus, but we know situations like this can still feel unexpected.

We’re actively reviewing your account to see if the transfer costs can be adjusted given your situation and would like to help. Please contact your plan advisor directly or call us at 1-800-431-7934 so we can work toward a resolution.

Worst investment decision I’ve ever made

About a year ago, I started a solo 401(k) account with them with the same risk tolerance as I have with my IRA account with a different company. In the first six months, my investment did not make any money, even though the stock market was doing OK. I was advised to move my money into a very aggressive portfolio. I did so, but in the first six months of this year, my investment made half of what my other IRA account is making. I contacted share builder to roll over my money to my IRA account with the different company, but they are making me jump hoops, have unreasonable demands. Essentially giving me a very hard time to move my money out from Sharebuilder.
I would never trust my money with this company ever again and don’t advise anyone to do so.

Easy to use, great service

Easy to use, great customer service. When I started my own company, where I'm the only employee, I had no idea I could even have a 401(k) until I talked to the good folks at ShareBuilder. Their website is intuitive and makes contributions, changes, fund switching, etc. easy and shows me my return.

ShareBuilder is way easier than some of the big companies I've relied on in the past when I was working for a big corporation.

I loved my experience with ShareBuilder…

I loved my experience with ShareBuilder 401k. My plan was simple and easy to maintain. When I left my job, I had questions about rolling over my plan and had to call customer service. The representative extremely pleasant, helpful, and communicated everything very clearly. I had been putting off that call because I was confused about the topic, but they made everything super stress-free! Now that I own my own business, when I set up a 401(k) plan I would absolutely use ShareBuilder 401k as my provider.

Do not use this company no matter what…

Do not use this company no matter what you do, I’m gonna tell you about my experience, me and my husband decided to look into this and see if this might be to our advantage with me getting ready to start up a business, we reached out to a specialist name, Jake KIEL, and he asked us a few questions and then my husband asked you a couple times about where do they do a distribution? Which funds do they specialize in just kinda negotiating just to get some information about what they offer They asked us for a EIN number, with us starting our business out we haven’t gotten to that point of having an EIN number, so me and my husband told him we decided we’re just not gonna go with you guys. We’re just gonna wait and move forward with something else, how about three months later we get debited in our account $150 out of nowhere no authorization nothing to be perfectly clear. I don’t even know how they got our banking information I have asked them do you have something with my signature on it? That’s saying that you had authorization to debit monies at my account. I am still waiting for paperwork. They’ve never received it which tells me this company is fraudulent. This company is fraud and that’s what they do they talk to you wanna two times on the telephone and they think that you have signed paperwork to operate with them, me and my husband have not signed any paperwork, or done anything else with this company it’s been three months since we’ve had any type of communication email phone what have you, and they still build our account $150 these people are out of line and I am going to report them to every agency I possibly can , you are lying because two days after I put in my complaint with my bank they reached out to you all asked you all to please present documentation that I have signed. You could not present the documentation and I receive my $150 back into credit into my account so that tells me that you’re lying. I have no further correspondence with you all because you could’ve handled this the correct way we were in the stages of discussing what you had to offer. My husband had asked you guys what type of investment that you put our money towards how does that go from that to move on board sign onto your program, so you are lying you know I didn’t sign any documents. Bank of America says you didn’t sign any documents and as far as I know this matter to me is closed because I got my money credit back to my account and everybody I see I will tell them not to do business with you

Hi there,

We’re sorry to hear about your concerns and appreciate the opportunity to clarify the situation.

Our records show that on February 10, 2025, a Solo 401(k) plan was purchased by your business. One of our specialists assisted you by phone while you completed the purchase and setup process. This initiated a one-time $150 setup fee, which was processed as outlined in the agreement you reviewed and digitally signed during the purchase.

We want to be clear: ShareBuilder 401k does not charge any fees without customer authorization. A signed purchase agreement and custom quote were both part of your onboarding process, and we’re happy to provide those records again for your review.

We understand how serious your concerns are, and we take them seriously too. If you still believe there’s been any misunderstanding, please contact us directly at 401kpros@sb401k.com so we can provide the documentation and address any remaining questions.

Excessive charges to roll over 401k.

We signed up with sharebuilder for a 401k. They had no contact for years until I decided to move it to another company. Now they are charging me $630.00 in fees to roll over my 401k.

Hi there,

We’re sorry to hear about your experience and appreciate the opportunity to clarify the situation. We did send regular updates, check-ins, and required notices while your account was active. However, we understand that these messages can sometimes be missed. We’re always improving our communications process to make sure our clients stay informed on their plan.

Regarding the fees: we understand how frustrating unexpected costs can be. The $630 you mentioned includes both standard plan termination fees and accrued fees due at the time of closure. These charges are part of our pricing schedule as outlined in our fee disclosure, which helps cover the administrative costs involved with processing the request.

We understand this may have come as a surprise, and we’d be happy to review the breakdown of the fees with you or talk through any issues you've encountered with your plan. If you’d like to discuss further, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us directly at 401kpros@sb401k.com.

Мошенники!

These are real scammers.
Be careful.
I deposited a large sum of money into a deposit account similar to my store account.
After which I was inundated with fake applications that had to be processed within 24 hours, that is, I had to pay for them out of my own pocket.
My account was blocked due to one late application, and the amount of money remained with these scumbags.
When I contacted the support service, the operator laughingly said that I would no longer see my money unless I made another deposit.
These are scammers.
When making a deposit, I was completely blocked and did not respond to personal messages.

What a horrible experience

What a horrible experience. They shut down my account because my profile wasn't updated and the only way of contact was VIA EMAIL. You'd think, you invest all this money and the least they can do is give you a call. But nada. what a horrible way to treat your clients and their money.

Chiselers. Go elsewhere.

I had an old CD I forgot about. When I tried to get the money, the account was "locked" and no one knew how to get my money out.

WHAT A WASTE OF TIME!

I am losing money because of Sharebuilder. They promised me I would make the deadline for the 2014 IRA account. They made me crazy while opening up an account. It took two months of faxing my license, passport, and social (since it was always unclear???) until my account was approved.Every time you send a fax it takes two days until someone sees it. For some reason they do not accept documents through email. I've spent hours on the phone with them. Now I was told my check was sent back to me a while ago although I never received it! Stay far away from them!!!

Customer service has suffered since merger

Sharebuilder used to have great customer service, but it has declined substantially. Transactions require complex and arbitrary paperwork and processes, associates are not able to make business decisions or offer options, and associates blame you for issues you may have. "I'm sorry you didn't contact us earlier in the process". IE I'm sorry it's your fault/you don't know what to do. They will be condescending "Do you need help filling out your name on the form?" and will end chat sessions abruptly. There is no response to emails, and they frequently require you send them things via fax, yes, as of 2015 they are still faxing documents. Their online tools are great, but expect to end interactions with their staff frustrated and angry.

DEPOSIT SUBJECT TO HOLD, AUTOMATICALLY CLOSED ACCOUNT, 60 DAYS TO REFUND!!!

This complaint is about Capital One ShareBuilder in reference to an individual brokerage account that I opened with them on 2/18/15. This account was funded with a large deposit from my Bank of America checking account on 3/12/15. The complaint does not involve Bank of America.

On 3/12/15, I received a message from ShareBuilder that these funds would be on hold and the account would be “under restriction” for 5 business days, which I was not made aware of before I initiated this large deposit. The message stated that I could have Bank of America fax to ShareBuilder some information that showed that the funding account was legitimate and the funds were available in the Bank of America account before they were sent to ShareBuilder. Subsequently on 3/12/15, I contacted Bank of America and asked for them to send this information, which they did.

On 3/13/15, I received another message from ShareBuilder that said the information received from Bank of America was not sufficient since it did not contain the bank representative’s signature and the bank representative could not discuss client information on the phone due to security reasons. I again visited my local Bank of America and requested the information to be signed. Bank of America faxed in the revised information to ShareBuilder on 3/13/15.

On 3/16/15, I received another message from ShareBuilder that the information faxed to them by Bank of America on 3/13/15 was still not sufficient. I called ShareBuilder and was told that I would just have to wait the 5 business days before the funds would be made available, which I reluctantly accepted. I confirmed with ShareBuilder that the funds would be made available in my ShareBuilder account on 3/19/15 and the call concluded.

On 3/17/15, I received yet another message from ShareBuilder that stated that my individual brokerage account was reviewed by the ShareBuilder Operations Department and it was determined that the account would be closed and the funds would be credited back to my original bank funding method 60 DAYS (!) after the original deposit on 3/12/15.

I immediately called ShareBuilder to see why this decision was made and to see how I could recover the funds immediately rather than wait 60 days. ShareBuilder could not provide a reason why the decision was made and I was told that I would need to wait the full 60 days to recover the funds.

I respect that ShareBuilder and other companies have a right to choose who they do business with, but if the business relationship is terminated for whatever reason, then the funds need to be credited back to the account owner AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. It is not reasonable that the account owner should have to wait 60 days for the funds to be returned. Likewise, it could be considered common courtesy to advise the account owner of the reason why the Capital One ShareBuilder Operations Department has decided to close the account.

Based on this experience, I will advise everyone I discuss finance with to not do business with Capital One or Capital One ShareBuilder. This company clearly has dishonest business practices including misrepresentation of deposit status (account restriction for 5 business days after a new deposit), poor client customer service, inability to efficiently refund customers of their rightful funds at account termination, and overall company disorganization.

I have sent a complaint to sharebuilder.com (a capital one company) and they closed the account - so do not complaint because they will close your account

I have sent a complaint to sharebuilder.com (a capital one company) and they closed the account so do not complaint because they will close your account !

i'm writing this review today 01/09/13 because i have sent them a complaint directly to their customer service email and they closed the account!

sharebuilder.com closed the account with no warnings! not even 1 simple Email!

sharebuilder.com closed the account with no explainations

sharebuilder.com closed the account and they said that "they don't have to explaine why"

in other words, sharebuilder.com does not like complaints
so don't complaint or they will close your account! (probably with your founds)

so i wanted to know the reason and i asked them and see this ones
the VERY-NON-professional reply was "we don't have to explaine why we close accounts because you have signed our agreement and we can close accounts for ay reason and without explananation"

so they are looking for customers but in the same time they reserve the right to close accounts without a single word or explanation!

so the question is
can you trust an inferior company like sharebuilder, com?

if they don’t remove and replace the inferior level customer service people they will have many and numerous complaints!!
