Mortgage Application Ref: 0905-0104546154. Awful experience with application for re-mortgage. 3 stages to the application process. Santander missed appointment for call for 2nd round with no prior notification. Representatives (not all) rush, appear stressed and are rude. I am now in stage 3 of the process and have not received an update, despite me sending e-mails to them on their portal for updates.

I am compelled to express my profound dissatisfaction with the services rendered by Santander Consumer Bank. Despite having fully remitted payment to settle my loan obligations—as indicated by the amount specified on your netbank platform—there has been no acknowledgment or confirmation of receipt for a period exceeding 27 days. Such an inordinate delay in processing is both unacceptable and indicative of a significant lapse in your financial management procedures.
Furthermore, I have been subjected to undue harassment by debt collection agencies purporting to act on behalf of your institution. These agents have initiated contact without proper identification or disclosure of their affiliation, persistently requesting sensitive personal information over the phone. This conduct not only breaches standard ethical practices but also infringes upon my right to privacy, causing considerable emotional distress.
Efforts to resolve these matters through your customer service channels have proven futile. Specifically, two formal inquiries submitted via email—referenced as case numbers 1289438 and 1292071—remain unanswered. Additionally, customer service representatives have indicated that direct communication with the financial department is unattainable, thereby obstructing any meaningful resolution. This lack of responsiveness and transparency reflects a disregard for customer welfare and raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of your internal communication protocols.
The cumulative effect of these experiences has been detrimental to my well-being, necessitating potential therapeutic intervention to address the anxiety and emotional turmoil incurred. It is disheartening to anticipate that Santander Consumer Bank will not assume responsibility for the consequences of its negligence, including the costs associated with necessary mental health support.
In light of the foregoing, it is evident that Santander Consumer Bank prioritizes internal convenience over client satisfaction and fails to uphold the fiduciary duties expected of a reputable financial institution. I urge a thorough review of these grievances and expect prompt corrective action to restore confidence in your services.
Appalling customer service
Santander took a payment for my loan after the loan had been settled. They state on their website that all refunds will take place within 10 days of the error. It is now a month later and I have received no such refund.I have called twice. The first time I was kept waiting for over an hour and gave up. I have now been holding for 95 minutes AND I am on your chat which nobody is responding too. You took a payment for the above loan after it had been settled and I still have not received my refund over a month later. Your web site clearly states that refunds will be given within 10 days and so I would like some answers as to why I have not had mine. The customer service for your company is appalling.!

Absolutely awful experience. Set up a payment plan for a loan as I lost my job. After 6 months (and making regular payments) they said I don't have a plan at all and they are sending the debt to an agency. I mean wtf??? God knows where the call centre is, but I'm pretty sure it ain't the UK. Avoid these guys like the plague.

Just got off the phone with Mark in the Isle of Wight office, he helped me with closing down a joint account. This is an issue I've been battling for a while with Santander after separating from my partner and it not being amicable - previous staff when I'd called had not been helpful at all. Mark was really understanding and quickly got my issue sorted and now my mind is at rest knowing my finances are safe. Thank you so much! Because of Mark's helpfulness I will be opening a new account with Santander to replace the old one, had i not had this positive experience after so many difficulties with this issue previously, I wouldn't have bothered opening a new account.

Impossible to set up account
If you are a new customer and have middle names, do not bother trying to open an account!
I have been trying to open a joint account with my partner, who has been a Santander customer for many years, and it has taken over 4 months before I have given up and gone to another bank instead!
A summary of the problems:
- The online portal for submitting personal document evidence seems to never work, unable to log in
- Advised to call customer services, two different numbers given on customer document hub page and email. Both have long wait times.
- Have tried submitting many different documents as proof of address, which keep being rejected as my bills do not contain my middle names. In my experience, I have never needed to include these in utility accounts and are not included on the paper statements anyway!
- Attempted to visit a branch to provide documents in person, which in my area is only open for 3 hours on a weekend - arrived just before closing to find already closed!
Santander are a bank of opposites
Santander are a bank of opposites. Some staff you meet are great and they deserve to be praised, but their efforts are completely destroyed by the unhelpful , dysfunctional incompetence of other depts. Primarily the customer contact team. If youre not familiar with them they're the ones who send out the anonymous (don't tell you who they are other than santander) mildly threatening letters and emails telling you they need to speak with you or they'll close your account.
Well despite complying with everything they wanted they've decided to close our current account and have closed it without telling us. I could fill a whole volume with the now 3 month story of their inneficiency, lies and lack of communication but I won't bore you.
Examples of their stupidity? Apparently to help them close it they need us to go into a branch and provide details of our addr. That'll be the same details we provided in June to them , as they're aware approx 4000km away from the nearest branch.If I had a mind to visit I couldn't because I can't spend my money.
Speaking of addresses. They told me an electricity bill was acceptable as proof. No problem off it goes only to be rejected as the address didn't match their records. Errrr no thats my addr to the left, the one you're quoting is the leccy board main office for our district, I haven't moved there.
This idiocy would be amusing if it wasn't for very serious fact that as they seem to hold the power of life and death on your finances they kill you off. They are a law unto themselves and Ombudsman intervention comes after resolution so you are in their hands. This has caused us tremendous stress and inconvenience.
My advice to anyone reading would be at least don't out all your eggs in one basket in case you fall victim and have other accounts, better still leave or don't open an account with them
If an advisor decides to respond with the usual "we're sorry", don't bother. I will simply post my list of complaint reference numbers, several to date have been found against you and resulted in compensation being paid to us.
FOS beckons.

Unreasonable Policies
They asked me for round after round of documents. It took about 10 hours to get everything they asked for. Then I missed one follow-up call and they restricted access to my account.

Over three weeks ago a payment on my CreditCard was declined. Next day three further attempts to use my card failed. When I phoned Santander I was told that there had been a suspicious activity and I had failed to respond to their phone calls/ voicemails and so card had been stopped.
When I checked with 1471 and my voicemail I found no evidence of any such claim - indeed the last recorded activity was from the previous week.
My card was “ unblocked” however the contactless facility did not work. When I phoned Santander they told me the “ system” had not recorded any failed usage attempts - inferring I was economical with the truth?
I escalated my complaint and a week later my card failed completely !!,!
Another phone call told there may be a virus which needed investigating by their technical team. A week later I chased up to be told the “experts” found nothing wrong with my card. How can they tell when they do not even have it?
Accordingly the chip must have failed, where did I keep my card?. In my wallet next to my backside I replied - I do not have a mobile, but perhaps my pacemaker was destroying my card?
Now they have agreed to issue a new card. Wonder how long that will take? This is a service I pay a fee for

What a service
I started with a customer service call…
I started with a customer service call to them to cancel an online payment. The service colleague could not understand my request. So l went on to the robot online service but this did not have the request on there. Instead they again got my information all wrong and cancelled my debit card.
I then phoned the customer complaints and the colleague supposedly took down the details. I have been a customer for over 50 years. I also have an account with First Direct their customer support is very good.
I am now considering going with Barclays for a switch they offer £175 to switch. I told the complaints service this.
After a few days I called them and the guy asked me to tell him what my query was. I asked him to read what his previous colleague wrote. At the end of the call he said he could only apologise and would pass on my complaint to the staff. He could not care less when I told me l will close my account after 50 years and go to another bank and get paid to do this. What an absolute sham their customer service is. So disappointed. I am a UK customer. This was for UK Santander .

Website blocks account when I tried to use their app. Completely blocked access. This resulted in a lengthy wait on phone to Santander via two departments to get replacement security pin. Four letters later with multiple dates… I try using the newest date security pin and No…it still doesn’t work!
Another call to Santander…wait to be put through to “digital team” just before 5pm I get cut off…called back again. I had to start at the beginning. Eventually I get put through to digital team after telling them the problem again. Ended call after being told I’d need to wait for another pin. I said I don’t have any faith this will resolve the problem since it’s a repeat of the same process, what’s changed?!
Get called back to have to go through all the security questions again so she can send the stupid letter AGAIN!!!
Utterly useless company. In time I’d waited I’ve applied with my existing bank for their services.
