I am updating this review in response to Providence Life's reply, which claims they cannot identify my policy and suggests this may not be a "genuine policyholder experience."
Let me be clear: I am a genuine former policyholder. Because this is a public forum, I used a pseudonym ("Mr. Smith") to protect my privacy. However, I have already provided my full name, policy number, and investment details directly to Providence Life via a formal Data Subject Access Request sent to their administrative email.
For the public record, here are verifiable details that should allow Providence Life to locate my file if they genuinely wish to investigate:
Policy Prefix: PLL402***
Product: Horizon Portfolio Bond
Date of Investment: October 2017
Initial Investment: Approximately $60,000 USD
Adviser/Introducer: deVere Group (Shanghai)
Policy Status: Surrendered in 2025
The Core Issue: Fees Consumed Nearly All Growth
Over a period of 9 years, my net return on this $60,000 investment was approximately $10,000. That is an annualized return significantly below what a simple, low-cost balanced portfolio would have delivered over the same period.
The reason is clear: layered, persistent fees that are deducted regardless of performance.
Annual Marketing Fee (1.0%)
Investment Adviser Fee (1.0%)
Annual Management Fee (0.1%)
Quarterly Administration Fee (~$400/year)
Total annual fee drag: ~3% of portfolio value.
For the first four years, my transaction history shows the portfolio was parked in money market and liquidity funds—cash equivalents earning near-zero interest—while these fees were deducted relentlessly.
Providence Life's response states: "If the reviewer believes this response is in error, we encourage them to contact us directly with verifiable details."
I have already done so. I am awaiting the complete fee ledger and trade history that I am legally entitled to receive. Once I have that official data, I will be happy to update this review with the exact figures, which I currently estimate exceed $16,000 in total fees on a $60,000 investment.
If Providence Life is truly committed to "the highest standards of transparency," I invite them to:
Respond to my pending Data Subject Access Request with the complete transaction history.
Explain why my online portal access was immediately removed upon surrender, preventing me from downloading my own records.
Explain why subsequent deVere advisors were denied the ability to make changes to the portfolio allocation when they attempted to improve performance.
Until then, this review stands as an accurate reflection of my experience. I encourage other policyholders to carefully review their fee statements and ask hard questions about where their money is actually going.

The Providence team is always of great help, especially because I have clients that have different needs. Their responses and turnaround times are always within reasonable time frames. The portal is also good as I can download all documents from there and can generate illustrations that come in handy in client meetings.

I've been a client of Providence for several years now, and have been very happy with the solution offered. It's easy to keep up to speed with your investment with their easy to use and informative platform.
The flexibility and transferability of their structure as an international client was what led me to select their structure initially, and I would be happy to recommend to others based on my experience so far.

In the interests of transparency, I’m an IFA, but I choose to use Providence Life for my own investments.
I have lots of experience working with many different life companies, stretching back 15 years now as an international adviser (and 31 years in all) and I find that Providence Life consistently offer the best levels of service. It also helps that their fees are very reasonable, too.
Are they perfect? No, but I usually find that the sticking points are driven by regulation and not incompetence and I have never known them to invent internal rules and then blame changes to external regulation, when regulations have not changed.

Having now worked regularly with Providence for over 3 years, I know that their customer service is top among their competitors (big thanks to Jo Mongey for all the help!). Also, after the rework from a few months ago, their portal is slick and modern and has significantly improved client oversight and control.

I have been using Providence as one of the first choices of life companies for my clients for 8 years now and would highly recommend.
Quick and efficient, their team is always on call if they need to check anything over for compliance and to make sure clients accounts are set up quickly.
As a European based advisor, it is really useful to have a relationship with an overseas life company with a fully open architecture structure; many of the EU life companies are restricted on investment options so in order to provide full Independent financial advice Providence are one of the best!
