Things I learned

Project abroad was really supportive all the time during my project. Also, I experienced many things and learned a lot from the culture of Philippines. All the people and mostly the kids were kind and energetic. Even though the environment wasn’t good enough to study , they shared with each other and kept on studying by finding creative ways.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us!

We’re truly happy to hear that you felt supported throughout your project and that you were able to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of the Philippines. It’s heartwarming to know how much you learned from the resilience and creativity of the children. Your reflections show a deep appreciation for their spirit, and we’re sure they were equally inspired by your presence.

Thank you again for being a part of this meaningful work.

Parents perspective - Teenage daughter in Galapagos

My daughter recently returned from 2 weeks in the Galapagos with Projects Abroad. She had the most wonderful time. She got up close to lots of wildlife including the giant tortoise, turtles, sea lions, sea iguanas on the beach as well as boobies. The team were kept busy for their two weeks with lots of activities so they were not bored. Although I think my daughter had enough machete experience by the end of the two weeks 😂.
Given there were 3 flights each way, we took advantage of the option for a chaperone on the flights. That really helped give us peace of mind for the journey. The chaperone met us at Heathrow airport and was with the group for their entire trip, meeting us back at Heathrow 2 weeks later. She was great and we were reassured that our daughter was in safe hands.
All in all, this has been a truly memorable experience for our daughter and one she will never forget. She’s already looking at options for next summer and can’t wait.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your kind words about your daughter's recent trip to the Galapagos! We’re absolutely thrilled to hear she had such a wonderful and memorable experience! We're also so glad to hear that the chaperoned flights provided peace of mind for your family. Our chaperones work hard to support and guide the group throughout the journey, and it's fantastic to know that made a positive difference.

Most of all, it’s wonderful to hear that she is already looking ahead to her next trip — we’d love to welcome her back next summer for another incredible adventure!

p.s. As she is already a Projects Abroad alumni she is eligible to receive £200 off the total cost of her next trip with us. Don't forget to claim this for her next trip!

Hi Anna. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience of your diving project. We're really sorry to learn that you were disappointed.

We appreciate the community aspect you are referring to was particularly challenging, in part due to your arrival date being different to your cohort. As a consequence you missed the most sociable aspect of this project, which is the first few days - where Participants meet for the first time and work towards their diving certifications before they start diving.

We feel we did what we could to support you, including adapting your schedule, extra lessons, and alternative activities. Choosing to leave your project early had obvious consequences for your experience too, and we regret that you did not feel confident enough to begin diving but respect your wishes as our primary concern is always the health and wellbeing of our volunteers. However, in this case, we were able to offer suitable land-based alternative activities.

Normally our diving projects are some our most popular projects, the sense of accomplishment leads to enduring bonds. We understand that being on a different schedule and not completing the project led to a different, and disappointing experience, for you.

Your feedback has been valuable, and we are taking steps to improve the Participant experience - especially for those who may arrive out of sync with the rest of the group.

Thanks again, and do get in touch via info@projects-abroad.co.uk if you would like to continue this conversation.

Shark conservation in Fiji

Shark conservation in Fiji was a spectacular experience to me, especially being amazed by how I become really close friends with other fellow volunteers, and got to dedicate a lot of effort onto mangrove restoration, coral/species identification, and the renowned shark dive. Last time, I had the opportunity to participate in reef conservation at Koh Tao, Thailand. Though both of the experience were amazing, I loved more of how I could form a cute family with people around me~

It's truly wonderful to hear that your experience on the Shark Conservation Project in Fiji was so spectacular. We're especially happy to know that you bonded so well with your fellow volunteers, building that sense of community is a huge part of our mission, and it's those connections that make the hard work even more rewarding. We hope these friendships and the passion for conservation you've cultivated stay with you long after your time in Fiji.

Thank you again for choosing our program and for being such a wonderful volunteer.

I wanted more volume

First of all, it was a good trip for me and had lots of fun.We had plenty of activities in the weekends but I was bored in the weekdays during the program. There were nothing to do after school. Also in my school we didn't do anything exept for just watching the children.Other schools did things like painting or things, but we didn't.I wanted to do something that I can't usually do. We didn't know when to go home because the last kid goes hone at like3 or 4pm.This was also boring. We couldn’t go out so much because we were still kids and our host mother wasn’t home every time.Even we got out, there was just shops like those in Japan.I wanted more activities from the project abroad. And the most thing I wanna say is that I wanted to stay in the village. It was completely different and I wanted to feel more FIJI. In a bad meaning it was too comfortable in the town and had small differences from Japan.I heard that they had more interaction with the villagers and had many experiences.
Though I tried hard to make my time better and we could do that just by moving by our selves. That was a good experience for me but also there were limits too.

My experience volunteering in Kenya

The people their made it a truly great experience, they were so friendly and interesting so everything became much better. Each day had exiting and enjoyable activities and many you really felt made a difference. With amazing landscapes and wildlife creating an awesome atmosphere and experience. Despite long and bumpy drives that had great wildlife spotting opportunity but took up a lot of the day. As well as not being able to do some things because of timing constraints and weather.

"Where Giving Back Feels Like Coming Alive: Cambodia with Projects Abroad"

Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Cambodia with Projects Abroad. I participated in the 2-Week Care and Community Special Project “HSS Care,” which began on July 6, 2025, and lasted for two weeks. I was a little apprehensive, even though, being French, I was reassured because I knew there would be many other French people there, as a staff member who answered all my questions before I left had told me. During my flight to get there, I even had the chance to meet other volunteers who were participating in the same mission as me. Upon arrival, staff members were there to welcome us, and they were very friendly. After a short ride in the decorated minibus that would follow us throughout our stay, we arrived at the hotel. I really wasn't expecting such a hotel! I thought we would end up in a dingy hotel on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, but in the end we were in the heart of the capital in a perfectly decent hotel. From the very first dinner, there was a great atmosphere and everyone was talking to everyone else, getting to know who they would be spending the rest of their stay with. The mission took place on Silk Island in the middle of the Mekong River at Koh Dach Primary School. So every morning we had a short bus ride with a ferry to get there, which was very pleasant with the music and atmosphere in the minibuses. You can't imagine what an extraordinary experience it was, almost more memorable than a hyper-luxury trip. The kids ran to us from day one. Every morning when we went to school, they were so cheerful despite their poverty and it was a real pleasure to keep them occupied with games for half of the day. The other half of the day, we were in charge of renovating the school. For example, we planted grass and trees, built concrete walls, flagstones and swings, and repainted. For meals, we changed restaurants every day in the evenings, and the food was always very good, with plenty of choice. And on weekends, evenings and times out of school, lots of activities were organized and we sometimes had free time. As for safety, we were always accompanied by a member of staff. The hotel we stayed in during our trip to Angkor was really great, with a rooftop swimming pool and a great atmosphere.I've tried to be as complete as possible, because I know that you can be a little stressed before you leave, or even not sure you're leaving with the right agency. But believe me, this will be one of the best trips of your life, one that will warm your heart and make you feel like you're doing good. Excuse my English, I'm French after all.

Brain chemistry altering

Best month of my life so far, hands down. I was lucky enough to spend 4 weeks in Tanzania on a medical internship, and never have I been more heartbroken to leave a place. Those 4 weeks reminded me why it is I want to study medicine, they gave me a true ‘why’ for the career I want to follow. Because I have every intention to come back, where instead of just observing, I can actually help.
I have never felt more welcome in a place, instantly, I as made to feel like I belonged there. My host family became a home away from home, the Projects Abroad staff became my mentors, my fellow interns, some of my coolest friends. The people I met while working or out on the weekend trips will remain in some of my fondest memories even if I never see them again.
I experienced so much, from spending a week in the Paediatric ICU, to working at outreaches where we saw over 100 patients, to watching a surgery on a 11 day old girl. Every day was new and challenged me differently, opening my eyes just a little bit more. Every moment I experienced left its impact on me, being immersed in a society and systems so different to those I grew up in.
These four weeks have left me more aware, more empathetic, but also more determined, and encouraged by humanity. I have realised how important it is to enjoy the little moments in life, that you just have to smile anyway.
So thank you to the Projects Abroad team who work so hard to make this all possible, you are amazing. Shout out to Dr Kassu, Jessica and Giver, who became my mentors, Danny, who always brings joy wherever he is and knows exactly how to appear at the right time, and of course Country Director Glory Matoi, for saving me through a near panic attack getting a visa, and just being the awesome person who makes sure everything is running smoothly. Thank you to Jovita and James, my beautiful host parents. I will come back to visit all of you, that, I promise.
